First derivative of a function as the gradient of the tangent to its graph
The gradient of the tangent to a curve ( ) y f x = at a point P can be determined using the
idea of limit.


Start with the chord PQ and move Q nearer and nearer to point P. Notice that when point Q
approaches point P, the chord PQ approaches the tangent to the curve at point P. Therefore,
the gradient of the chord PQ approaches the gradient of the tangent to the curve at point P.
