Section A [28 marks] Answer all questions in this section. 1.

A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the object distance and image distance of a lens. The arrangement of the apparatus for this experiment is shown in diagram 1.1.

Diagram 1.1 A object is put in front of a light bulb, the object distance, u is adjusted to 20.0 cm and the light bulb is switched on. The screen is adjusted until a sharp image formed on the screen. The image distance, v is shown in diagram 1.2. The procedure is repeated with object distance, u = 25.0 cm, 30.0 cm, 35.0 cm, and 40.0 cm. The corresponding image distances, v are shown in diagram 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6. v

A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the length of the conducting wire, l with its resistance, R. In this experiment, difference length of conducting wire is used to collect a series of pair data, voltage and current, to calculate the resistance. The result is shown in the graph of resistance, R against length of conducting wire, l in diagram 2. a) Based on the graph in diagram 2: i) State the relationship between R and l. _________________________________________________________________________________ [1 mark] ii) Determine the value of R when l = 48 cm Show on the graph, how you determine the value R. R = ___________________ [2 marks] b) Calculate the gradient, k, of the graph R against l. Show on the graph how you determine the value of k.

[3 marks] c) Given that =

where,

R = resistance of the conducting wire, l = length of conducting wire, A = cross-sectional area of conducting wire, and = resistivity of the conducting wire. If cross-sectional area of the conducting wire, A = 0.04 cm2, use your result in question 2(b), calculate the resistivity of the conducting wire, .

[2 marks] d) Based on the graph in diagram 2, determine the value of R when l = 128 cm Show on the graph, how you determine the value R. R = ___________________ [3 marks] e) State one precaution that should be taken to improve the result of this experiment. ____________________________________________________________________________ [1 mark]
