Certified Proficiency Programs

AWS widely recognized certification programs ensure that inspectors, educators, and welders can perform to an industry-standardized level. To achieve this AWS mark of excellence, applicants face a rigorous review of credentials as well as examinations and hands-on trials. More than 47,000 professionals have discovered the personal advantages of becoming AWScertified and their employers have reaped the competitive edge this designation brings to QA and QC efforts. Members are entitled to substantial savings on application and examination fees.

Inspection Trends
Inspection Trends was launched specifically for AWS-certified professionals dealing with all facets of nondestructive examination. The magazines goal, to enhance job performance for those whose responsibility is quality assurance, is accomplished through quarterly reports. Covers new technology, trends, issues, safety, and basic methods in quarterly editions.

Networking and Intelligence Gathering

The AWS Welding Show, International Exposition and Annual Convention brings more than 25,000 professionals together in what has been described as the convergence of a $40 billion industry. This mega-event features hundreds of exhibitors with their helpful technical representatives, and dozens of seminars, roundtables, lectures, and special events. In addition, one of the worlds largest gatherings of researchers convenes during the AWS Convention, constituting its Professional Program. If you value being in the know, if you want your team instructed, invigorated, and innovative, this is one event your company cant afford to miss.

Standards
AWS is recognized worldwide as the impartial forum for the development of consensus-based American National Standards for welding. Over 170 standards as codes, recommended practices, guides, and specifications are led by AWS flagship standard, the Structural Welding CodeSteel. Even a quick review of this catalog shows the breadth of coverage that only an established and respected organization such as AWS can provide.

Serving on an AWS Committee

Over 1,400 professionals currently serve on more than 200 technical committees dedicated to the development of consensus standards under the rules of ANSI. Having your key personnel literally in the thick of information that will transform into standards used by thousands of companies both in the U.S. and overseas is an easily understood advantage. AWS is accredited by ANSI to publish American National Standards on welding. AWS administers the U.S. technical advisory groups (TAGs) to ISO/TC 44, Welding and Allied Processes, and most of the ISO/TC 44 subcommittees, as well as being the Authorized National Body (ANB) to the International Institute of Welding (IIW). AWS also holds the secretariats of three ISO/TC 44 subcommittees and a number of working groups. You can be a part of this influence on national and international standards by supporting participation on an AWS committee or TAG, or by enlisting in the AWS-sponsored American Council of IIW, an important and prestigious body.

Best-of-Industry Books and Manuals

AWS not only publishes single-author publications such as the renowned Welding Metallurgy, but also supports the publication of the singular Welding Handbook and the AWS-18th edition of Jeffersons Welding Encyclopedia. Dedicated to improving the environment of welding, AWS ensures the timely dissemination of safety documents, including one of the most relied on in the U.S., Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting and Allied Processes. New AWS series for the serious welding professional include The Professionals Advisors and The Practical Reference Guides.

Web orders use: Standard welding procedure specification

AWS publishes Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPSs). These specifications were prepared by the Welding Procedures Committee of the Welding Research Council, and are balloted through the AWS standards development program as American National Standards. Standard WPSs may be used on work covered by the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding CodeSteel, the National Board Inspection Code, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, as well as in general fabrication work. Those SWPs with red order numbers may be used on ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel work with additional requirements. Your license is good for unlimited intracompany distribution. The one-time AWS SWPS user-license fee is $180 ($240 for nonmembers). Refer to license order number.

Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications

This revolutionary document represents the most significant change to aviation welding standards in more than 30 years, including coverage in three areas never addressed in MIL-STDs: design, repair, and nonflight hardware. And, for the first time, there are authoritative procedures for weld repair of in-service (existing) aerospace flight hardware. In fact, the standards use of weld repair technology enables weld overhaul beyond the areas originally designated for a weld. The excellent coverage on inspection is bolstered with information to avoid both under- and overinspection, arising from the D17 Committees position that, Choosing acceptance criteria beyond the capability of the welding process may lead to numerous inspection rejections, increasing costs. To help, tables on acceptance criteria (one in U.S. Customary units, the other in metric) have been included with distinctions for Class A, B, and C welds. D17.1:2001 emphasizes, but is not limited to, fusion welding of aluminum-based, nickel-based, iron-based, cobalt-based, magnesium-based, and titanium-based alloys using electric arc and high energy beam processes.

Specification for Underwater Welding

Developed with guidance and assistance from leaders in the field of underwater welding, this specification covers the requirements for the underwater welding of structures or components, including welding in both wet and dry environments. The first six sections cover the general requirements for underwater welding, while sections 7 through 10 contain the special requirements applicable to four levels of welding: above-water welding, welding for less critical applications, welding where load bearing is not a primary consideration, and welding to meet the requirements of another code or specification. This is critical information on general underwater welding provisions, the classification and design of welded connections, workmanship, technique, and qualification. The specification also contains six annexes, which include sample welding forms, terms and definitions, guidelines on safety, references, and other information. ANSI Approved. 131 pages, published in 1999. D3.6M:1999 ............................$72.00 AWS Members ......................$54.00 Web Order Code: D3.6M

Guide for Aluminum Hull Welding

Proven processes, techniques, and procedures for welding aluminum hulls and related ship structures. The information presented applies chiefly to the welding of aluminum hulls that are over 30 ft. (9 m) in length and made of sheet and plate 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) thick and greater. The distinction is made because of the different requirements for welding thin-gauge (less than 3/16 in.) and thick-gauge (1/4 in. and over) aluminum. 65 pages, published in 2004. ANSI Approved.
