AIT Consulting Brief Project Data Sheet Energy Sector

Project Name Design of solar thermal systems using RETscreen Version 4 Location: Thailand Brief Description Conduct training on the design of solar thermal systems using RETscreen software (Version 4) participants from industry, public and private sector, and university professionals. The applications of RETscreen for mitigating green house emissions were highlighted and the economic analysis of projects discussed. The objective of the project was to study the contributions of bio-energy to rural development and poverty alleviation. The primary task of the project was to carry out an assessment of the potentials of all types of bioenergy i.e. liquid, solid and gas for rural development in the first phase and to identify major barriers to bioenergy production and use in the second phase. In addition, case studies of each form of bioenergy were undertaken in the second phase. The main activity of this project was to organize an Asian regional workshop on urban energy access and development in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop provided an opportunity to disseminate the findings of studies on access to modern energy by households in urban and peri-urban areas carried out by nodal centers of Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD) as well as by others in Asia. This workshop was designed to stimulate regional level discussion on opportunities available with low carbon green growth and improve capacity to identity relevant policies, programs and projects for putting them into practice.

Project Name Design of Box Girder Bridges for Thimpu Expressway Location: Bhutan

Brief Description Green Peace Enterprise in collaboration with ACECOMS completed the design of two bridges namely; Semtokha Rongchu and Ngabi Rongchu. These bridges are located on the ThimpuBabesa Expressway. The work was submitted to The Department of Roads (DOR), Ministry of Communications, Royal Government of Bhutan. Semtokha Bridge is a 50 meter single span bridge with post-tensioned box girder deck. The Ngabi Bridge is 102 meter long arch conventional reinforced concrete bridge. Various state-of-the-art software were used for the analysis and design of these structures. Development of comprehensive software for the automated design of the houses, incorporating various design and construction processes was conducted. In addition to this software, ACECOMS conducted a full scale testing of walls constructed by this method. These tests were carried out at the structural engineering labs at AIT, and many modifications were suggested by ACECOMS in the design of walls and blocks Technical investigation was conducted to evaluate the structural damage caused by fire and propose remedial measures.

The main objective was to determine the ultimate load capacity of the individual blocks of various configuration, walls and columns of various dimensions. A series of tests were performed on above specimens at the laboratory of the Structural Engineering and Construction Division of Asian Institute of Technology. To research proposed herein will involve an experimental study of a new structural system to resist seismic forces called moment frames with knee brace. Project Name Dynamic Modal Analysis of a 40 Story Building Location: Thailand

Brief Description A dynamic modal analysis was conducted to determine the natural frequencies of vibration and the corresponding mode shapes. The building was modeled in three dimensions using appropriate beam and plate elements and the analysis was carried out on STRAND6.16 software. The results of this analysis were used for wind load characterization and analysis. In one of the industrial plants at Rayong, Thailand, some cracks were observed in a few beams. These cracks were observed nearly two months after the casting of these beams. ACECOMS was invited to review the structural significance of these cracks and suggested remedial measures. The investigation was carried out in two parts. First a general review of the structural design, observation of the cracks at site and preliminary nondestructive testing of concrete was done. Second, load testing of the structure by filling of the water tanks and by application of additional loads on the cracked beams was conducted. Wind analysis of a 90 m chimney stack was conducted for Thai Caprolactum Public Company Limited. Modeling, analysis, computations and software development were done by ACECOMS. In 1993, the Department of Public Works, Ministry of Interior proposed to build a new road, Buddha Bucha road, which approaches the Phra Pathom Chedi (the oldest pagoda in Thailand). It was postulated that the vibration due to additional vehicular traffic on the proposed new road may cause distress to the pagoda structure. The effect of vibration from vehicular traffic on the stability of the Chedi was therefore studied, in order to find out some measures for protecting this valuable ancient place. To study the effect of traffic vibrations on the strength & stability of the Chedi, Finite Element Analysis was performed using STRAND 6.15 software. The study reveals that the traffic vibrations on the proposed new road may not affect the stability of Phra Pathom Chedi structure in a scale as to cause sudden collapse. Nevertheless, the additional tensile stresses due to the traffic vibration is undesirable, as cracks can be initiated and propagated, leading gradually to the overall deterioration of the structure The dynamic properties of about forty (40) tall reinforced concrete buildings in Bangkok will be identified by an ambient vibration method. Based on the results obtained, appropriate empirical formulas for estimating building fundamental periods will be derived, and a method to construct accurate building dynamic models will be developed. The seismic performance of six (6) representative buildings were extensively evaluated by nonlinear pushover analysis, and economic and effective corrections of retrofit schemes to improve the seismic performance will be identifies. Based on these results, practical seismic design guidelines were made

The project involved investigation of pile damage at Kerry Siam Seaport. The scope of work included site visits to get a realistic view of the pile damage. The drawings and the designs were studied to ascertain design loads, design assumptions, methods etc. Information from these sources formed the basis for calculation of various capacities (axial, moment, torsion etc.). The accident report was also reviewed to understand the overall situation and also find the similarities and difference between them. Simulation for the scenario of the accident was also conducted to correlate within acceptable limits, the type of the vessel, weight, velocity, the location and impact angle, post impact movement and the observed damages on the piles and the response of the bridge.
