Discovery of the Panamanian Taste


Resumen de la unidad
Students will create a folk cooking recipe book from region to region including tips about themes like a balanced diet, nutritional facts, easy-to do recipes, stories about the people who facilitated the recipes and will work also on the publication of it by generating publicity announcements. They will also put some of the recipes into practice by making a cooking video, also they will bring samples of folk products from different provinces to make an exposition of them. Students will play roles as researchers, chef, promoters, publicity organizer, nutritionists and vendors of products. Through these activities, they will get to know the different food for each region in Panama and why these differences happen by mean of the legends told by their ancestors. At the same time, they will make people notice and value these traditional foods.

This project is for the teaching of English as a Second language but it may correlate with other subjects like Science, Community and family Development and also abide subjects like math with may deal with measurement and also the logic and importance of following instructions to have a good product, Spanish because the book will be in both languages and computer science that will be the media used to print and overspread the information

-Panamanian cuisine gastronomy, nutrition and tourism expectations. Advantage of knowing the gastronomy of our town. Recipe of different regions in Panama.

- Investigating the concept of gastronomy and the implications. Listening attentively to conversations about traditional foods and the history behind identifying main ideas and supporting details. Explaining how to make some local dishes but caring about nutrition. Reading and summarizing about the advantages of exploiting the gastronomy of a town. Designing a booklet or magazine of recipes with ingredients, procedure, stories, and illustration. Preparing a folk recipe with a good nutritional balance.

-Being familiar with the meaning of the local gastronomy. Valuing the effort of people in order to prepare traditional food with healthy nutritional balance. Participating actively in the creation of a magazine or a booklet.

Objetivos del aprendizaje

Investigates and presents traditional recipes with good nutritional balance. Integrates and develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with preferred traditional foods. Interprets a variety of informational texts about good local gastronomy. Identifies organizations that help to promote local gastronomy in Panama. Summarizes recommendations of good nutritional habits for adolescents, pregnant, and obese. Creates a booklet or magazine about a nutritional recipes using likes and dislikes. Indicadores Logros Identifies the importance of valuing traditional gastronomy in the society in video sources and others. Creates a magazine or booklet on different Panamanian local food. Develops an attitude of respect and commitment toward the traditional gastronomy of each region by becoming aware of characteristics and differences in order to create a positive and healthy society environment.

Resumen de evaluaciones
To be sure on what the students know about the topic and create the framework for the vocabulary needed for the project, they will be questioning informally about what they know on Panamanian cuisine of different regions. Chat and Brainstorming: Students will discuss on the information presented and add anything else related to the Panamanian cuisine. During the process, they will investigate in websites, with their families and other people on what are some foods commonly known in panama and in the different provinces. Film and multimedia Presentation They will present a 12 minute introductory film of one recipe procedure made in English and Spanish and framed within a power presentation which introduces Panamanian cuisine story with recipes included in the booklet or e-magazine. E-magazine or printed booklet It is a website including the book and the film and promoting Panamanian cuisine from the ground up. Students will evaluate their own progress and final product as well as the one of their partners.

Procedimientos

1. CHAT: Talk in pairs or groups about: restaurants / Panamanian food / local food/nutritional facts. 2. PANAMANIAN FOOD BRAINSTORM: Spend one minute writing down all of the different words you associate with Panamanian food. Share your words with your partner / group and talk about them. 3. MY COUNTRYS FOOD: Write down what you consider to be the three most delicious dishes in your country. Talk about the points below to your partner / group:

The students with special needs will receive mor detailed instructions in his language and they also be advised and receive support from the profesor of the special classroom.

All the students speak Spanish, but the classes will be given in English as it is the subject. Some adequations in Spanish will be allowed to promote understanding.
This will be leaders, coordinators of the group.
