Many experts advise putting away dangerous items and locking doors and windows before sleep to reduce risks of harmful activity while sleepwalking.

Good sleep hygiene and avoiding sleep deprivation is also recommended. Some experts say that sleepwalkers should be gently guided back to bed without waking them. Others counter that idea and state that waking a sleepwalker may result in their disorientation, but it is not harmful.

HOW COMMON IS IT?


According to the National Sleep Foundation in the U.S., sleepwalking is prevalent in 115% of the general populace. Sleepwalking is most prevalent in children, and usually disappears by adolescence. Sleepwalking in adults is less common, but when it does occur, the events occur three times more often per year and last for more years than in children. Sleepwalking in old age is rare and usually indicates another disorder. Old age disorders may include delirium, drug toxicity or a seizure disorder. .

When sleepwalking are a danger to themselves or others (for example, when climbing up or down stairs or try to use a potentially dangerous tool such as a stove or knife), it is advisable to remove them from danger and bring them back to bed. There have been documented cases of people who have died or been injured as a result of sleepwalking.

WHAT IS THE DISORDER?


Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism or noctambulism, is a sleep disorder belonging to the parasomnia family. Sleepwalking arise from the slow wave sleep stage in a state of low consciousness and perform activities that are usually performed during a state of full consciousness. Although generally sleepwalking cases consist of simple, repeated behaviours, there are occasionally reports of people performing complex behaviours while asleep, although their legitimacy is often disputed.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?


There are certain factors that can precipitate sleepwalking, including sleep deprivation (having slept badly the night or the previous night), stress, febrile states and especially alcohol.
