THE CLAUSE #here are two inds of clauses: independent *main+ and dependent *su%ordinate+. An independent clause is a group of words that has a su%ject and ver%. It is used as a part of a sentence %ut is grammatically independent and could therefore stand alone. Examples:

A dependent clause is introduced with a su%ordinator such as when, while, if, or before. It is followed %y a su%ject( ver%( and complement. It cannot stand alone %ecause the su%ordinator signals need an independent clause to complete the meaning of the sentence. Examples:

3. A complex sentence is the com%ination of an independent clause and a dependent


clause. #he two clauses may %e in either order. $lthough I enjoy playing tennis, I hate golf. I hate golf although I enjoy playing tennis.

4. A compound 0 complex sentence is a com%ination of two or more independent clauses


and one or more dependent clauses. I hate playing golf, but I enjoy playing tennis even though I am not very good at it. Use connectors

Su%ordinators introduce dependent clauses( which are joined with independent clauses
to then form complex sentence.

C"M$"U ! SE TE CE A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses connected %y a coordinating conjunction( such as and, or, nor, but, for, so, yet. Each clause in a compound sentence must have a su%ject and a ver% and can stand alone. 1unctuate the sentence %y putting a comma *(+ %efore the coordinating conjunction.

A compound sentence is formed with: Independent clause( - coordinating conjunction - independent clause

Examples:

1. 2eorge has applied for a scholarship( and 3iane has re)uested financial aid. *additional

two possi%ilities+.
