Me8 (smirks) So you don*t think that your !rother truly cares a!out your well.!eingG Sherlock8 =erhaps in some sadistic way+ ,e watched me get tortured !efore intervening in my rescue+ 2hat do you think that says a!out his feelings towards his 4#rother 9 8ine5G (mockingly) ,e always needs to esta!lish his self.proclaimed superiority !efore !eing of use to anyone+ Me8 t sounds like a classic case of si!ling rivalry+ Sherlock8 ,as your !rother ever try to have you killedG Me8 *m an only child+ Sherlock8 know+ deduced that the moment you walked in+ was !eing rhetorical+ Me8 think 8rs+ ,udson was right+ ;ou two secretly care a!out each other+ Sherlock8 2hat has she told youG (beginning to get annoyed) Me8 2e*re getting off.topic here+ )escri!e your mind palace+ ,ow did you first create one, and is there a limit on the things you can recall or scenarios you can foretellG Sherlock8 Cinally, a decent 6uestion+ was !eginning to think that you*re 0ust an idiot+ 8y mind palace is !ased off a psychological techni6ue called the method.of.loci+ Me8 *m aware+ Sherlock8 9h, so you*re not a complete idiot+ 8y mind palace is an ela!orate mansion used to neatly organize the contents of my mind+ use it to recall things from dates, people*s appearances, specific facts, past cases and memories, you get the idea+ imagine distinct locations and associate them with something uni6ue+ 2hen my !ody went into shock, used my mind palace to con0ure a!stractions of 8olly, 8ycroft Pamong othersQ who then spoke to me and guided me through the process of staying alive+ 8y mind palace is invalua!le during cases and coupled with my attention to detail, now have an e7tensive li!rary of knowledge+ Me8 #ut how did you start creating oneG Sherlock8 started it as a child as a result of my daily logic e7ercises+ 8ycroft also has a mind palace, !ut dou!t that his is as ornate and grandiose as mine+ ,e*s not as !right as he would like people to think+ needed a method to easily recall information and make the most efficient use of my mental activity+ /ike a li!rary+ needed to !e a!le to learn something, catalog the information, and !e a!le to call upon it months or years later+ (nd 0ust happened to read something from a psychology !ook that mentioned this techni6ue, and so used it+ Me8 So is there a limit, or can you make the palace as large as you wantG

Gruszczynski -@ Sherlock8 9f course there*s a limit, *m not an R.men character+ Sometimes have to forget something from my short term memory to make space for something more important+ ,owever, tend to keep most of what o!serve+ The more connections make, the easier it !ecomes to remem!er+ also keep other mnemonic devices at hand that make sense only to me+ Me8 That*s remarka!le+ ;ou*ll have to teach me how to make a mind palace+ Sherlock8 *d rather not+ Me8 So uh++tell me a!out your drug ha!its+ Sherlock8 don*t have a drug ha!it (murmurs I'm really going to kill Mycroft)+ Me8 So you don*t smoke, drink, (pulls out a newspaper) use opiumG Sherlock8 use nicotine patches and caffeine to keep me alert when *m working for days on end+ avoid getting drunk whenever possi!le+ did get drunk once thanks to 1ohn and the hangover was awful+ (lcohol has the side effect of making my o!servations utterly useless+ (nd would descri!e myself as a casual opium user+ Me8 $asualG Dh+++ Sherlock8 8ycroft tends to e7aggerate it, really+ The last time used opium was when was undercover+ #ut never let myself get psychologically dependent on the drug, and *m used to the physical withdrawal+ t*s a good way to pass the time+ Me8 9kay, moving on then+ ;ou don*t seem to show any interest in romantic relationships+ ,ow difficult was it to pretend to !e 1anine*s !oyfriendG (nd how would you descri!e your feelings towards Sthe womanSG Sherlock8 (re we !ack to thisG 8ay!e should take some morphine+ t wasn*t difficult to pretend+ t was 0ust another role had to take to work on a case+ Me8 #ut don*t recall you doing this for other cases+ Sherlock8 :ot to this e7tent, no+ Me8 #ut didn*t you think that you went a little too farG Sherlock8 =erhaps+ She is an attractive woman and it*s unfortunate that she had fallen for my charms+ 0ust don*t see the need for silly, romantic arrangements+ Me8 So where does 4the woman5 come into thisG Sherlock8 She 0ust happens to !e the only woman who has ever challenged me+ 8ost women, and men, !ore me to tears, !ut have grown to tolerate it+ The woman has left a permanent impression on me for that alone+

Gruszczynski -A Me8 Speaking of women, you were shocked to discover that 8ary was the gunman+ 2hat happenedG )id you simply overlook the warning signsG Sherlock8 em!arrassingly attri!ute that to human error+ saw the signs !ut didn*t think that 8ary was an enemy+ was right a!out that, !ut suppose that didn*t want 8ary to !e a spy for 1ohn*s sake+ got complacent and it put my life at risk+ Me8 ;ou constantly risk your life, and sometimes the lives of others, to !est your adversaries+ ,ow do you cope with the possi!ility that some day, things might go irreversi!ly wrongG Sherlock8 don*t+ simply refuse to make a life.threatening error+ may !e a little more cautious a!out putting 1ohn*s life at risk for now on, !ut wouldn*t !e Sherlock ,olmes if stopped making !old and calculated decisions with some degree of risk+ Me8 So *ve always wondered, why do you hate $harles (ugustus 8agnussen !ut not your nemesis 1im 8oriartyG Sherlock8 #ecause 8agnussen was a parasite and little more than a !ully who e7ploited the vulnera!le+ have no intellectual respect for a man like that+ ,e was a repulsive human !eing and *m glad that he is dead+ %8ay!e should ask a!out what it was like to take someone*s life+ )id it change him or make him more like 8oriarty, etc+ suspect that he would say no though& Me8 Those are some strong words+ So is part of you thrilled that 8oriarty is !ackG Sherlock8 missed the challenge, !ut *m apprehensive a!out the effect his return will have Pon /ondonQ+ ( man like 8oriarty doesn*t 0ust die, and shouldn*t !e surprised that he would come !ack from the grave 0ust as had+ Things are going to get interesting soon+ Me8 So last 6uestion, how do you think he survivedG Sherlock8 (long pause) don*t know+ hate not knowing+ Me8 Thank you for your time+ Sherlock8 (lost in thought, unsettled after his last response but hidden by a serious, e pressionless ga!e)
