What do we believe in?Why do we believe in them? What is the difference between believing something/someone and believing in something/someone? What are some things that you believe? What are some things that you believe in? Why do you believe in them?

Building a Sandcastle
Living Close to the lake. Many of you would have had opportunities to build a sandcastle. What made a great sandcastle? What made it challenging? Then along comes a tide and your hours of work just seems to vanish. There was nothing on the beach that secured the sandcastle down. The foundation was missing.

Without a secure foundation it is impossible to build a castle of any kind; in the same way without beliefs, values, morals, experiences and faith as our foundation, we will have struggles.

This is an autobiography of a girl in her high school days. This is her story she tells about. She had anxiety attacks. She was lost and found her way by believing. We all need to believe in something.

In today's world, one has to wonder, can you really be whatever you want to be when you grow up? Now, before any of you go into a tirade about never growing up because you're a Toys "R" Us kid, I am trying to act serious and civilized (for once). So, seriously, can I really be whatever I want when I grow up? Whether it is a small time businessman or the CEO of a major company, do I really have the choice to be what I want in a society that relies on money and power?

As kids, we are often asked what we want to be when we grow up.After scoring brownie points by saying, "I want to be just like you, Daddyand Mommy," I added that I wanted to be a fireman (I was five years old). M parents supported me wholeheartedly, but after experiencing the horrifying thing that is the movie "Backdraft," I quickly changed my mind I wanted to be a cop. Not just any cop, mind you, but a K-9 cop (I was seven, and had just seen the movie "K-9"). My parents again supported me. Then I watched the TV show "Cops" and saw how they sent the poo innocent doggy into abuilding to search for the bombs they suspected were in there (a job I am quite sure that the poor innocent little doggy did not volunteer for).

Now, every time I had changed my mind about what I wanted to be, at least one of my parents had said "Great" and "Never give up or lose sight of your dreams." I was feeling rather positive about my dream, my future, and myself.

Over the past five years, I developed a whole plan as to how I would become President of the United States of America.

I would graduate from high school and go to college to get my degree in political science and then law. Then, at age 25, I'd become a member of the Arizona House of Representatives; at 30, I would become a senator, and, by the age of 35, I would take the presidency! After leaving office, I'd be governor of Arizona. It was pure brilliance. Or so I thought. After explaining my theory to my mother, I was promptly told "In your dreams!" She literally laughed in my face and told me I would never be President because our family is not perfect enough, not rich enough and not powerful enough. I went to my room, my dream and my ego crushed (no easy task), and wondered if she were right.

Do you really need to have money and the perfect family to be president, or anything else for that matter? Whatever happened to "You can be anything you set your mind to"? All my life, I have been told this. Whether it comes from our family, teachers, friends, or from that little elf in "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" ("I want to be .... I want to be a dentist!"), we areal told that we can be anything we want. Judging from what my mother said, thesis no longer true. As I researched the presidency, I found that most presidents, especially the modern ones, have been rather wealthy, and all of them from powerful or rich families. Just as my mother said, none of these men could have became president without their power or money. I did more research, and it appears that, regardless of what you want to be, you have to have power and money in order to get there. It also appears that just reaching for the stars and setting your sights on something is no longer good enough, you have to do other things. So maybe your parents ought to change the saying to "You can be anything you want to be, as long as you reach the following criteria: (fill in the blank)."

If that is the case, I feel as though my dreams (all of them) are in vain and will never come true. My family is not rich, or powerful, and, trust me, it is nowhere close to being perfect. Besides that, if my own mother does not believe I have a chance to become president, who will? However, regardless of not having my mother's faith or being rich and powerful, I am still going to strive to reach my goal, because "I want to be... I want to be President!"

Day 3 Journal #3
Believing in something, anything is key to life. We have many strong beliefs that have an effect on daily lives. Today I want you to reflect on your beliefs, where they came from, how they effect your actions, words and thoughts everyday. What do these beliefs push you to do? What do these beliefs prevent you from doing?

All stories teach us something, and promise us something, whether theyre true or invented, legend or fact.

A familiar aspect of many religions is the use of stories, parables and fables to teach and reinforce moral attitudes an religious principles in forms easy to assimilate and remember. Likewise, urban legends are stories often used to spread and reaffirm societal mores and beliefs, and since much or our moral code is mirrored in religion, the world of parables and urban legendary frequently intersect.

FACEBOOK This childs got cancer. Facebook is ready to pay 3 cents for every share.

This appeal to help a child with caner hit facebook in January 2012, with a picture of a supposedly cancer stricken infant accompanied by a text claiming that Facebook would pay 3 cents (persumable toward the childs treatment) every time the item was shared on the social networking site.

This appeal is merely yet another reiteration of a long runing clas of hoax which lures the gullible into spreading such messages by promising tha tsome entity will donate money for the tratment of cancer or other diseases every time the message is forwarded or posted or shared on the Internet. Multiple charities an dcompanies have been unfairly dragged into such hooxes over the years by messages like this.

In fact the redness that we view as cancer an pulls at our heart strings is in fact a birth mark.

Journal Response
We have taken a brief look at ourselves as a way to understand what we believe in. You should be able to answer the following questions. Who am I ? What do I believe in? What are my strongest feelings? Where do I go from here. Think about it. What yearnings do you experience? For life? For relationships? For purpose fulfilment? For self esteem? For more?

My Story
We will be going to be working on My Story in the computer lab. Take this assignment seriously because this is your major assignment for the year. We will be adding to the assignment as we go along.

My Story
So let me ask you.. After answering the questions, why am I a making you do this assignment when the whole purpose of the year is about believing. In correlation with the program of studies we are looking at the aspects of believing.

Believing
One of the hardest things we will endure in life is the journey of deciding what to believe in . We find this in everything we encounter in life. That is why the stories are so important to everyone.

Why are stories important?

Stories are important to us because, whether they are fiction or non-fiction, we use them to make meaning of our lives. We have often been told how powerful it is for individuals to write down their goals. And those that do have a much higher chance of accomplishing those goals. I would suggest that a story is more powerful than a list of goals because it has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It has a stepby-step flow to it, just as life itself does. All stories have obstacles or challenges and either triumphs or defeats. If there are defeats, there are often morals or learning that can be extracted.

When we write our own stories we create our own mythologies. These are very powerful. If the story you have is that you never catch any breaks, indeed, you are much more likely to attract that in your life, and, everyone else will also think of you as the unlucky one. However, if even in your defeats, you find lessons that help you go forward, or opportunities for change, you will more likely create a life that takes advantage of those opportunities or puts those lessons to good use; a life that others can admire.

As a listener or reader of a story, we are much more likely to feel what we describe as inspiration. People do not feel inspired when given a list of tasks or goals, or told what to do. They need a story to go with the goals, something that takes them into the future. And, they want to know about stories from the past because they need the reassurance that others have experienced the same set-backs yet have triumphed.

I have spent a lifetime studying and using stories. Whether I use them in a speech to inspire, demonstrate, or entertain, or in a conversation one-on-one, I find it is the stories that people remember, retell and use to take the next step forward. They are the harbingers of the Aha! I frequently use stories in my work as a teacher to help others find inspiration in their own stories, or are retell my own, they have tremendous value and power.

As a teenager
One of the biggest issues for a teenager is being label.. We carry many labels throughout lives. What kind of labels do we have?

When you are teenager, these labels matter. One of the labels you really stuggle with may be the fact that you are still struggling with what it means to be Christian. This means you need to understand the basics of what you understand.

The label Christian has come to mean a number of things throughout the ages. To believers and non-believers the word has certain feelings associated with it. Yet, even among believers, the word is rather general and can generate a lot of confusion. Especially because life happens and affects whether we believe or not. More often Christians of all different denominations tend to focus on the differences in their faiths. Yet every type of Christianity tends to come down to the same basic beliefs

Beliefs as Christians
The Apostles Creed In the most basic terms, a Christian is someone who believes in God as Father and Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior, and Son. Whether someone is Catholic, Born Again, Protestant, Evangelical, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, etc., the basics of the Christian faith are summarized in the Apostles Creed.

Understanding the Apostles Creed gives you some insight into the overall beliefs of Christians across denominations. While some denominations do not directly use the creed (like Southern Baptists), it still outlines many of the universal pieces of the Christian faith.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

A Holy Trinity
Basically, all Christians believe in a Holy Trinity. There is God, who is father to us all. He created the heavens and the earth. Then there is Jesus, Gods son who was sent to us to die for our sins. Christians believe that Christ was crucified upon a cross for our sin and then he rose from the dead and ascended to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. Finally, there is the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of God that speaks to us, telling us how to live our lives.
John 3:16 states: For God so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone will not perish but have eternal life.

We are all Sinners

Christians believe that all human beings are sinners. Every human being is born to sin. God even thought about destroying all of humanity at one point, because humanity sinned so badly. Yet God made a promise to Noah that he would never destroy humanity or cause such devastation again. Still, throughout the Old Testament we see the Hebrews go through trial after trial for their sins.

A New Hope
In the New Testament we are introduced to Jesus, who dies upon a cross for humanitys sins. He is sinless, and yet he takes on the worlds sins and dies for all humanity. It is through Christ that Christians are saved from a horrible afterlife separated from God. Through Jesus Christians receive salvation and forgiveness of sin. People are saved from Gods wrath and get to spend eternity in Heaven.

Acts 3:19 says: "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. (NIV)
All of this talk about sin and Christ dying for the worlds sin may seem a bit heavy and complex, but it all comes down to God asking us to follow his commands and live our lives for Him. Romans 5:8 states: But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (NIV)

For me Happiness cannot be found living in the present; it is in the future somewhere. Write a response to what immediately comes to mind when you think about this statement.

Changes Ahead; Your Life Will Take New Directions

We are learning to live fully, becoming all that we can be. Life is a rich adventure if we know hwo to be attentive to it, value it and enter into it with our whole being.

Turning Points
Right now your are at a great turning point in your life; finishing high school, moving into adulthood, college, careers, training for a job. Life is full of promise but you may be filled with anxiety about what is ahead.

Marisa
Marisa finishes her homework. She smiles because she likes math and just as important is very good at it. Tossing her books and papers into her book bag, she takes out a catalog form the university she want to attend and flips to the section on electrical engineering. Although she knows that engineering is a tough major she is very excited.

Unfortunately, two black clouds hover over her plans. She wonders if she will encounter the kind of prejudice that she has felt in her classes at school. She overhears guys making sarcastic remarks about her hispanic back ground. Maris was hurt because these boys said she shouldnt be in calculas as she will only be bean counter. The first hurdle to over come.

The next hurdle is a bigger problem it is money. Her mothers small salary barley covers her necessities, and Marisas Father has sworn he will cut off child support when she turns eighteen. Marisa is sure she can get some kind of loan, but she still needs a well paying summer job if she is going to make ends meet. What if she can not earn enough money?

Joe
Joe sits at the dinner table, staring out the window at the night sky. Well Joe, what do you think? Have you decided yet? his father asks. I do not know, I just dont know yet, answers Joe in a irritated tone. His fathers look is not unkind, but he adds, You have to make up your mind one of these days.

Yeah, I know. After supper, Joe returns to his room, puts on his headphones, and cranks up his stereo. He opens the drawer that holds his catalogs. Catalogues of military schools, community colleges and trade schools. Each Catalogue has a promise for a full and successful future. So what is the problem?

However, Joes thoughts always take him in a different direction. He imagines himself having his own apartment, car, girlfriend. Enough time to hunt, fish and ski. Further schooling and the military will only delay this..

In your journal using Marisa and Joe as examples, write a brief description of the situation you are in right now as a senior including some of the details requiring decisions

Time to Stretch and Grow

A transition is a crossing or a passage- such as leaving High School and moving on in the world can be understood as a crisis of sorts. However, the word crisis is not entirely negative. The Chinese character for crisis is composed of two other Chinese Characters one for danger and the other for opportunity.

Why would they use these two symbols together? Why do they not see a crisis as a total negative idea?

This is the Golden Gate Bridge. It is 2.7 km long. It spans from the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco. It can be dangerous especially at night. The bridge could collapse, your car may break down, you may get hit by another driver or it can have thick fog that you can not see through. But with all the attractions in San Fransico and opportunities thousands of cars cross the bridge each and every day!

Finishing High School, crossing into a new world confronts each of you with dangers and opportunities, just as crossing the Golden Gate Bridge does.

Despite the tensions, pressure, and hazards a transition may encourage us to ask more questions about life. These questions can lead to an honest process of self discovery that brings about growth in us. Think about Marisa and Joe as they look ahead to life beyond High School. Marisa is already asking herself how to handle the many challenges. Joe does not seem to have a goal in place. Marisa and Joe will be stretched at times and really uncomfortable.

Think of one transition that you have already been through. List and describe the painful or hazardous elements and the opportunities of this experience of transition. Overall, are you better off now after the change?

Journal 11
What is your transitions for the next two years? What hurdles do you face? How will you overcome these hurdles?

A CALL TO BE FULLY ALIVE

Going through a transition enable us to keep growing. Growth comes naturally to all living things. Given some water and halfway decent soil a potato will grow into spuds. Given nurture, human beings can become fully alive too. A big difference between a potato and us, of course, is that we have conscious part in making our own growth happen. The person you will be at age eighty is to a great extent the person you are forming today!!

THE GIFT OF THE PRESENT MOMENT

The only life we have is the one we are living right now! It is said, Life is the sum of your present moments, so if you are missing lots of them, you may actually miss much of your life!! Discussion

OUR OWN ADVENTURE

Being fully alive is also something we have to do for ourselves. No one else can make it happen for us. A little story about an explorer of the amazon jungles proves this point, Have you heard of the Amazon Jungle. A place of mystery and natural beauty. An explorer recently returned from the Amazon. He said he can not put into words the feelings that flooded his heart when he saw the exotic flowers, listened to the sounds of the forest at night; the senses he felt from danger or paddled his canoe over white rapids.

He said, Go and find out for yourselves, to the people he encountered and he drew them a map. The people took the map. They framed the map. They memorized the map. They then journey the map and came back as experts of the river. They called themselves experts because they new every physical feature. They were so worried about recording the physical features they missed the flowers, the sounds, the smells. Were they alive in their own adventure?

BEING FULLY ALIVE

Being fully alive, we have explore life ourselves- seeing, listening, acting and taking our own risks. The adventure does not always mean traveling great distances, doing dangerous things, or being the lone ranger. We all live the adventure of living fully as we go through the process of becoming who and what we are called to be?
