Transition to Body: So who wants to learn a new game?

November 16, 2012

Body (25 min.):

Learning Activity #1: Squirrels 1) Explain to students that today we will be playing a teamwork game. This means we are going to work together and cooperate to have fun. Have students tell me what teamwork, cooperate and work together mean to them. 2) Share instructions with students: -You will be divided into groups and will all start at your home. -On go, squirrels may run to collect acorns from other squirrels homes, or the acorn pile in the center of the gym, 1 at a time. You may also steal tails from squirrels who are not on your team. You are not allowed to hold your own tails! -If a squirrels tail is stolen, they must return to their home until a new tail is brought to them by a teammate. -Squirrels may steal acorns from other squirrels homes. -If a squirrel has stolen a tail and is running to bring it to their home, another squirrel may steal their tail! This means you get to keep two tails; the one the squirrel was wearing, and the one they stole! -Squirrels are safe in the acorn pile in the center, and in their homes, but you may only rest in your home or the acorn pile, for 10 seconds at a time. -The sound of my whistle means it is the end of the game. 3) ASK: What do you do on the word go? Where can you collect acorns from? How many acorns or tails may you take a one time? Can you steal tails from other squirrels? Can you hold your tail on? Where do you go if your tail has been stolen? How do you get back in the game? If a squirrel is running to their house after stealing a tail, may you steal his tail? How many tails do you get then? Where are the safe zones? How long can you stay in the safe zones? What does the sound of my whistle mean? 4) Explain safety rules: Head up when running, shoes must all be tied up, be careful not to slip on the hoops or tails or acorns. ASK: Any questions?? 5) Have students begin, and stop them using the whistle as necessary.
Assessments/Differentiation: Monitor students while they are playing. Are they working as a team? Are they playing fair? Can they follow the instructions? Do they understand the instructions? Monitor students for cooperation and effort.

Closure (2 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Who enjoyed working as a team today? Feedback From Students: Thumbs up or thumbs down, should we play this game again sometime? Feedback To Students: You guys did a wonderful job today listening and cooperating with others! Thank you! Transition To Next Lesson: When we get back to the classroom, please put your heads down on your desk so I know you are ready to start Science! Please line up and walk quietly in the hallway.
