Abreia Epps Homework Response 4 Actors: Actors are the important people in the discourse community.

Mary Alice: The person who is telling the story. Killed her self during the first episode leaving her friends wondering why it happened. Throughout the episode she talks as if shes the narrator of the show. Bree Van De Kamp: One of Mary Alices neighbors and one of her best friends as well. She has this attitude of always putting a smile on her face no matter what the circumstances are. Most people think she has no heart because she barely shows any emotion in public. But behind closed doors, thats when she lets it all out. Susan Mayer: She is the silly one within the group of girls, and she freaks out about everything, but she has the biggest heart, and would help anyone who needs anything. Lynette Scavo: She is the hard working mom that comes off as having all the answers, who knows how to handle every situation. She has inner conflicts with herself when it comes to being this stay at home mom and this big time business woman. She was the president of a company at one point but when she got pregnant with the twins everything changed for her. And she battles a lot with that. Gabrielle Solis: A neighbor and also one of the best friends. Married to a very successful man, and she has everything she could ever ask for except her husbands time. She very cocky and doesn't mind throwing the things she has in anyones face. She is also needy, she needs attention, needs nice things, and she needs something to do. Mike Delfeno: He is the guy that Susan wants to pursue. He is a deep person, meaning her wont just come out and tell you everything about himself. He has secrets that he doesn't want people to know, so you can kind of tell that hes hiding something. Edie Brit: Is also similar to gabby, very confident woman and believes in getting what she wants when she wants it. Susan and Edie do not get along that well because they both want the same man. Shes very successful, shes a realtor. Carlos Solis: Gabbys husband who is also very successful. But he doesnt really pay his wife much attention because he is always working, he just buys her nice things and calls it a day, but he genially has a good heart. He just comes off as this big macho guy. Tom Scavo: The husband of Lynette, he is a slight pushover. Also a pretty successful man. He doesnt really help Lynette out with the kids and she hates that.

Martha Huber: Shes the neighbor who is letting Edie Britt live with her and she also knows that Susan is the one who burned Edies house down. And Martha wants to black Mail her. Zack Young: Mary Alices son. Seems to be a little mentally unstable. He feels awful about his mothers death, turning him angry. Paul Young: Mary Alices husband. Suspicious, has secrets, doesnt like socializing with other neighbors, compared to how this Literacy Practices: Literacy practices are the way of communicating within the discourse community. Examples, cell phones, emails, face to face conversation, sign language. Anything of that nature is literacy practices. Bree: Her mannerism is always very polite in everything that she does, and always cleans and is neat. She does this thing when she visits any of her neighbors she will bring some type of treat with her, like cookies, brownies, and muffins. Most of the way people communicate is going to one another houses and verbally speaking to one another. Rarely use cell phones but sometimes they do.

Artifacts: Physical items that have significant meaning in the discourse community. Material Things: Gabby likes material things such as, jewelry clothes make up, nice cars. Anything that will make her looks better than others on a daily basis. It makes her who she is. The Letter: The letter the girls found that may be the reason why Mary Alice killed herself plays a big role, its the cause of a lot of drama that goes on in the show. Houses: These people take pride in their houses and how everything inside and outside looks. Discourse Communities: Groups that share similar interest.

The Housewives: Bree, Lynette, Susan, Mary Alice, Gabby. Each of them is either stay at home moms or just s together to play poker, gossip and drink and wine.

Therapy: Bree and her husband attended therapy, as well as Mary Alice. Most people in this neighborhood belie to therapy first to seek out a solution to their problems first.

Observation One

Wednesday, January 29, 2014 Time: 5:00PM-5:40PM Note: This is A tv series. So the time I have typed out is the time it happened on the show but not exactly how it happens day to day. Within 10 minutes of time it could skip to another day.

5:00-5:07: Mary Alice is introduced, her lovely home, her lovely family. She would start her day with the normal routine. Wake up water her plants, clean the house until everything is perfection. Then she pulls a gun out of her closet opens it, pulls out a gun and kills herself. Martha Hubert calls the police. A Couple days later they have the wake at Mary Alices home where her best friends are introduced: Bree, Susan, Lynette, and Gabby. Bree is the perfect one. Lynette is the one with the bad children she has to constantly yell at to behave. Susan is the one who just recently divorced and wants a man, and Gabby is the formal model who married the rich husband.

5:07-5:14: Susan has a flashback about a conversation her and Mary Alice had with all the other girls about her cheating husband. They try to figure out why Mary Alice would kill herself, because she always seemed happy. Meanwhile Lynettes sons decide to jump in the pool during the wake; she jumps in the pool and pulls her children out, and leaves the wake, apologizing to Paul and Zack. Susan meets Mike one of her neighbors at the wake and they hit it off, and her daughter decides to go to his house the next day and meet him and to find things out about him.

5:14-5:30: Susan finds herself having to compete with Edie Britt for Mikes attention. Edie throws herself at Mike because when it comes to men, she will do anything. Meanwhile Gabby is having an affair with her gardener, a teenage boy while her husband is at work. He actually caresabout her but for her its just an affair because her husband is never around. Bree and her son argue a lot as if they dont like each other. Bree is pretty uptight about little things, and she later finds out her husband wants a divorce because he cant take it anymore. They went out to eat with and she left the table to fix him a salad and put onions in there forgetting that hes allergic and he passes out.

5:30-5:35: Mary Alices son (Zack) watched as his dad dug a huge hole in the backyard. Brees husband feels like she tried to kill him. He talked to her about how he hates how perfect she is or tries to be. And when she walked out the room she pretended to put water in the flowers but she

was really crying, but when she walked out the bathroom, perfection. Gabby cuts the grass for the gardener so her husband doesnt fire john the gardener so she can continue her affair.

5:35-5:42: Susan accidently sets Edies house on fire. She was spying on her because she thought Mike and Edie were hooking up, but it ended up being another guy and she felt so bad. Mike was talking on the phone to someone and pulled out a gun, and said Not yet, but Im getting closer and pulls out a gun. The girls were going through some of Mary Alices things and found a letter that said I know what you did and Im going to tell sent to her the same day she killed herself.
