COURSE STRUCTURE COURSE: EGR 2209 ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS (3 cr) PREREQUISITE(S): None COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course in electrical circuits that involves the application of network theorems in solution of circuits, and the analysis of transient circuits, sinusoidal steady state response, analysis of magnetic circuit and three phase circuits. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The aims of this course are to enable students to: 1. Differentiate balanced and unbalanced three-phase systems. 2. Discuss various laws concerned to electrical circuits. 3. Explain the knowledge on various network theorems 4. Explain the construction and circuit representation of active and passive elements 5. Define important concepts of Sinusoids and phasors. 6. Explain interconnection of three phases. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Successful students will be able to: 1. Compute the electrical circuit parameters using various circuit laws. 2. Compute nodal voltages and branch currents using nodal and mesh method. 3. Explain Thevenin, Norton, Superposition theorems. 4. Describe voltage and current source transformation. 5. Describe the importance of transients in D.C. circuits and AC circuits. 6. Explain the series/parallel RLC circuit. 7. Differentiate balanced and unbalanced three-phase systems. 8. Explain interconnection of three phases. COURSE FORMAT: Lecture / Instructional Hours: 2 hrs per week, Tutorial: 1 hr per week, Laboratory Work: 1 hr per week. [For short semester, Instructional Hours: 4 hrs per week, Tutorial: 2 hrs per week, Laboratory Work: 2 hrs per week.]

STUDENT EVALUATION Test 1: 10%, Test 2: 10%, Laboratory/project: 10%, Assignments/Tutorial: 10%, Final Examination: 60%. FINAL EXAMINATION FORMAT: Duration: 2 hours Students are required to answer FOUR out of SIX questions.
