Idol 1 Laurel Idol ENGL 1102-093 Connie Douglas 25 March 2014 Annotated Bibliography "Fight Cruelty: Laws That

Protect Dogs in Puppy Mills. ASPCA. Web. 12 Mar 2014. This main point of this article is to inform its readers of the laws and regulations that are currently present for puppy mills. The article identifies the federal and state laws that are established to protect the animals, as well as, the laws that are there to protect the consumers. It explains how it is difficult for the government to enforce strict laws regarding puppy mills and their regulations. One of the main arguments is that laws are enforced at different levels, including federal and state, so it is hard to get law equal across the country. Also, these laws are different from animal cruelty laws, which have a different punishment. In addition to this, it is often difficult to have probable cause to randomly enter a breeding center to charge them with breaking the laws. This website was a very useful source for me to use. Although this is not a .edu website, it is a .org and it is reliable and creditable for the information that I am specifically looking for. Not only does the source provide the laws that are present, but it also tells when these laws were established and what the laws specifically control. This specific website could have some bias due to it is an advocate for animal rights and stopping animal cruelty, but the specific webpage that I was on gave pure facts and seemed to be fairly objective. The goal of the source was to solely educate its audience on the current laws and regulations there are to help protect animals that are victims of puppy mills. This source was very useful to my research. It gave me creditable information to back up one of my voices for my roundtable essay. The information that was provided was crucial to answering my line of inquiry because I believe that laws and regulations on puppy mills is very important when deciding if they should be legalized or not. I believe that this source will be a sound source and provide good evidence for one of the voices of my essay.

Idol 2 Gormley, K, and J Berry. "Animal Welfare Position Papers, Puppy Mills, and You." The Canadian eterinary ournal. a evue Print. This journal talks about how practicing veterinarians are connected to the situation of animal welfare. It also describes how veterinarians are affected by the mass production of animals. It also addresses the current laws that are established to benefit animal welfare. Although his article is written from veterinarians from Canada, it is relevant to the United States because they say that we have affected the importing and increased amount of puppy mills in Canada. The journal relates puppy mills to vets and animal shelters by telling the amount of animals that are killed in shelters every year. The main point of this journal is that if veterinarians stand up and act for the welfare of animals, people will also stand up and voice their opinions to help these helpless animals. I think this is a very useful source. It is a scholarly journal, so it is very reliable and creditable. In comparison to my other sources, it may offer a bit less information, but it offers information from a different point of view, which is very important in this essay. The goal of this source was to point out that puppy mills do have an affect on practicing veterinarians and they believe that it is their job to lead people and stand up for animal rights. This source was helpful to me because it also backs up and provides evidence for one of my voices of my essay. It helps shape my argument because it gives another point of view on the topic and is from the voice of veterinarians themselves, as well as other countries that are being affected from the practices of people in the United States. I can use this in my research to help me find more information from this point of view. It also changed how I viewed my topic because I did not really think that puppy mills affected veterinarians, nor other countries. "Iowa Tames Puppy Mills." American City & County 125.4 (2010): 22. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 20 Mar. 2014. This article provides a real life example of laws being made a changed to better the lives of animals. It tells about a new law that was issued in Iowa to help ensure that animals are treated humanely. The goal of the law is to eventually reach full illegalization of puppy mills in the state of Iowa. The source also tells that this law is to ensure that animals are treated correctly and that healthy animals are sold to consumers. This was a fairly useful source. It did not provide me with a lot of information, compared to my other sources, but it was reliable. I found this article on a database through the UNCC library. The article was very objective and in no way had any bias. The goal of this article was to tell people about a new law that had been made in Iowa to help protect animals. This source was helpful to me because it provided me with a real life example to back up my line of inquiry and voices. It helps to shape my argument because I will be able to use it as proof and evidence that all states are capable of making changes for the betterment of animals in puppy mills. t rinaire Canadienne. .11 2 11 -8.

Idol 3 "Puppy Mills Research." The Humane Society. The Humane Society of the United States, 29 Jan 2014. Web. 12 Mar 2014. This source is mainly available to inform people about the facts of puppy mills, the dangers of them, and the things that can result from puppy mills. This source provides readers with multiple links to research on puppy mills, including: the number of dogs that come from puppy mills, how many times a female dog is bred, the average amount of animals in puppy mills, and common complaints from owners with animals from puppy mills. Also, there are facts and figures on which states in the United States are allowed to have puppy mills, which states are regulated, and which state are illegal. This source also provides information on puppy mill bust and investigations, as well as, information on the type of environments and conditions that animals in puppy mills live in. This source was probably the most useful of all of my research. It provided me with a numerous amount of information, all of which are facts on various different aspects of a puppy mill. ike the ASPCA website, this website is also very reliable. It is a .org but it provides sound information that comes from research. This source could have a small amount of bias due to the Humane Society being advocates for animal rights, but it is majority objective information and serves as an educator to its readers. This source was extremely helpful to me. Although animals are not one of the voices of my essay, this website will help me to create a catchy and crucial introduction to catch the readers attention. This source gave me the important facts are required to serve as a voice to the animals. The website really opens the readers eyes to many different viewpoints and facts of all of the things that come along with puppy mills.

Idol 4 Sacks, Pamela. "Puppy Mills: Misery FOR Sale." Animals 133.5 (2000): 10. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 20 Mar. 2014. This article tells a heart wrenching story of hundreds of puppies that were found abandoned on the side of the road, in extreme heat and poor conditions, while trying to be transported to pet stores to be sold. Even though it tells a sad story of many innocent puppies, it gets straight to the point to identify the problems that need to be addressed. The author of this article believes that the USDA is responsible for keeping puppy mills under the microscope and continually regulated. But at the same time, the article tells of the problems that come along with these regulations and why it is so hard to do. This is a moderately useful source. It offers a lot of opinion based argument and bias; the author often writes about animal rights issues. Compared to my other sources, this article offers a different type of information. Instead of mostly facts, it offers stories and truth to why puppy mills are the way that they are. This source is reliable due to coming from a database from the UNCC library and being a scholarly article. This source was not as helpful to me as my others have been. The only way I foresee it shaping my argument is by giving me more evidence to use for the voice of the animals. It does not necessarily provide me with the facts that I need to back up my other voices point of views.

Idol 5 Schumaker, BA, MM Miller, P Grosdidier, JL Cavender, DL Montgomery, TE Cornish, RM Farr, M Driscoll, LJ Maness, T Gray, D Petersen, WL Brown, J Logan, and D O'Toole. "Canine Distemper Outbreak in Pet Store Puppies Linked to a High-Volume Dog Breeder." Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation: Official Publication of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, Inc. 24.6 (2012): 1094-8. In this source, the main argument is that a high volume of puppy mills has been connected to a canine distemper outbreak. It argues that canine distemper is fairly uncommon in pet stores, but there has recently been a fairly large outbreak of it, and it is believed to be a result of animals that come from puppy mills. It tells that over 1,400 dogs were identified to having canine distemper and were euthanized to keep from spreading the disease. The journal also talks about how these outbreaks come from animals coming from puppy mills due to their poor living conditions and lack of veterinarian care. This is was fairly useful. Although it gave me more facts and numbers than I was necessarily looking for, it is still a good source to use. The information seemed very reliable. It was a scholarly journal and all of the information came from investigations, so the information was correct and current. This source was objective, it did not seem to be taking any sides or have any bias. The goal of this article was to merely inform its readers or other researchers on facts that were gathered through an investigation of a canine distemper outbreak. This is was source was helpful to me because I can use it to back up one of my voices. It will be a huge help to the voice of the veterinarians. It shapes my argument because it gives solid proof and evidence that puppy mills are bad and they affect multiple people and cause many different problems. This journal made me look at my argument differently because it made me realize how much puppy mills are affecting the things around them.

Idol 6 Web, Staff, writ. "More than 40 dogs rescued from NC puppy mill." Fox 8: WGHP, 22 Mar 2014. Web. 22 Mar 2014. This source is a news article from my local news station. It reports that a puppy mill was busted in Duplin County, NC. It tells of the bad conditions that the animals were living in and the condition of the animals themselves. It reported that the dog breeds varied from Yorkshire Terriers to German Shepherds. The news article said that these animals were living in welded shut cages in their own feces with no water. Some of the animals even had broken bones. The owners of the property were charged with over 40 misdemeanors. This source was sort of useful. Compared to my other sources, it is much shorter and does not give a lot of information. However, it does provide me with real life examples and situations that are reliable. Because the story came from a news station it is objective and reports only facts, no bias was present. The goal of the source was to report an incident to citizens. This is will be helpful to me because I can use it to back my argument up. I believe that it makes an argument more realistic and touching when there are real life experiences to go along with it. I can use this source to back up the voices of inspectors/regulators, as well as, the silent voice of the animals.

Web, Staff, writ. "More than 60 dogs rescued from NC puppy mill." Fox 8: WGHP, 12 Mar 2014. Web. 12 Mar 2014. This source is also a news article from my local news station. This incident occurred about a week before the previous story. This puppy mill was busted in Iredell County, NC. This time, a local animal shelter and the Humane Society of the United States was called in to help save these animals. There was a search warrant issued and the owners were compliant to give up the animals. These animals suffered from severely matted hair, untreated health conditions, and cuts due to the wire cages they were living in. The article also discusses how this is the seventeenth rescue in North Carolina during the past three years and stricter laws need to be enforced. Because of the lack of laws and regulations of puppy mills, North Carolina has become one of the worst places to harbor these puppy mills. This was a very useful source. Although it still gives minimal information like the other news article, this article provided a little more information and gave more insight and focus on North Carolina and the laws concerning puppy mills. This information is reliable and objective. It comes from a news station and they reported only facts and quotes from the people involved in the rescue. The goal was the source was also to inform citizens. This source was very helpful to me. It will help me shape my argument in the sense that it gave specific information on the situations happening in North Carolina. Like the source above, I can use this source to help shape and back up the voices of investigators/regulators and the silent voice of animals.
