Kayla Champion Douglas English 1102 March 25, 2014 Annotated Bibliography 1. Braman, Donald, and Dan M. Kahan.

"OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF GUNS, THE FEAR OF GUN CONTROL, AND THE FEAR OF CULTURAL POLITICS: CONSTRUCTING A BETTER GUN DEBATE." EMORY LAW JOURNAL 55.4 (2006). March 4, 2014. EBook. Kahan and Braman write to educate on how the debate on gun control is created by the culture. The debate is not moving and not producing results for either side. The goal of this essay is not to persuade one way or another, but to overcome misconceptions and try to uncover what the gun debate is really about. The Emory Law Journal is very well known in the political and academic world. I believe that the source is very credible. There could easily be bias but there is not a side in the paper. The writers are not trying to persuade one way or another. This source can be used in a lot of different ways. I see this source helping out in the introduction of the topic because it gives good clear details about the gun control debate. I can also find different viewpoints in this one document because they incorporate more than one. 2. Burger, Warren E. and James B. Jacobs. Can gun control work?. Oxford University Press, 2002. March 1, 2014. EBook. Burger talks about many aspects of gun control and the possibility of it working in the US. He tells of the many things that the US is trying to decide on and the things that are already in place to try to fix gun related violence. Burger describes the purpose for guns in America and how they can be used for good. As many other sources, fear is a big problem. This is a credible source, not only because it is a book but because the purpose of the book is to analyze the gun control debate and to contemplate whether or not gun control could work in America. There are many aspects involved in gun control and I think that each individual circumstance should be debated and discussed. I can use this article because it lines up with my topic and line of inquiry fairly well. There are many different things addressed in this book so I know that I can utilize some of the information in it. 3. de Souza, Maria de Ftima Marinho, et al. "Reductions in firearm-related mortality and hospitalizations in Brazil after gun control." Health Affairs 26.2 (2007): 575-584. March 4, 2014. EBook. This is the experiment results completed by Brazil in 2003. These results were published in 2007. Brazil is known for having one of the highest homicide rates in the world. The article tells how Brazil restricted guns and still allowed people to own them. Brazil also places higher penalties for breaking the gun laws. This article is credible because the statistics are used from the World Health Organization and they are well known. There are also lots of sources used for the

information. This source gives experimental data to show that there was an effect on the entire country. This will be beneficial to my paper because it shows that the government doesnt have to ban guns all together to create a safer country. Smarter moves and an increase of requirements to get guns and even stricter penalties for violating gun laws can do some good. 4. Endorf Jr, Robert J. "THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA GUN BAN: WHERE THE SEDUCTIVE PROMISE OF GUN CONTROL MEETS REALITY." (2008). Endorf writes about the most studied gun control ban in the country, The District of Columbia Gun Ban. The gun ban has been in place since 1976. Even though this has been in place, there have not been any obvious advantageous effects. Some people believe that it makes average citizens helpless in a city with very high crime rates. This source is reliable because even though it is from one viewpoint. The author is very educated and has done a lot of research to create the fifty page paper. Since he used almost two hundred sources, I believe that he was well versed in the subject and would therefore be very credible when writing this paper. I think that this source along with the other sources I have gathered will be very powerful. Specifically, I think that this source with the number 10 source will work very well together. This paper is very relevant and I can see ways I will use this source when writing my final paper. 5. Moorhouse, John C., and Brent Wanner. "DOES GUN CONTROL REDUCE CRIME OR DOES CRIME INCREASE GUN CONTROL?." Cato Journal 26.1 (2006). March 1, 2014. These two authors make a comparison in the beginning which is elaborated on throughout the paper. They believe that relationship between gun control and crime rates is more complex than what it may seem. The essay describes this relationship and the two-step linkage that connects the two. This source seems to be credible, mainly because of the research put into it. Moorhouse is a professor at a very high level college. Wanner graduated from Wake Forest in 2003. I dont think that these authors would have added feeble sources to their paper when it is going to be published in a very well known journal. This will be useful to me because it gives a different view on the relationship of guns and crime. The direction of the effect runs from gun control to crime rates. This is not what is normally though of when people think of gun control and crime rates. I believe that this source will be beneficial to add to my paper. 6. Squires, Peter. Gun Culture Or Gun Control?: Firearms and Violence: Safety and Society. Routledge, 2012. This British author gives lots of details on how America depicts guns and fear. Squires makes a direct connection to fear and lack of confidence in the police and buying firearms. Squires refers to many articles that he has read, pictures published in magazines, and interviews that he has read or seen where America isnt responsibly showing how guns ought to be kept and used. I think that this source is credible because there is a lot of research that was put into the book. It may be bias towards pro-gun control but I can use my arguments against it. I find that a lot of what this author has said makes sense but I also feel like he is asking a bigger, broader question, why do we think guns can solve a problem?

I think that I can use some of the facts used in this book to help present my argument even though this author seems to be against guns. I feel like there is more to the book than just the persuasive nature and I can see how some of the topics in this book can be used in favor of my topic. 7. Lott, John R. The bias against guns: Why almost everything you've heard about gun control is wrong. Regnery Publishing, 2013. After September 11, fire arm sales soared. Since we almost never hear about the good that guns can do, the debate for gun control is highly skewed. Many people dont believe that people actually use guns for defense and that it is commonly used that way. This author goes into detail about how fear dictates the opinion of many citizens and how gun use in a defensive way can be a good thing. This source is credible because of how many sources that he used in the book. His purpose for writing this book would create a sense of crediblility because he wants to educate people about guns and why they should not be afraid of them. This is similar to what I want to do in my paper. I can use this source in many ways because our purposes line up very closely. There are many instances that I can look into after referring to the paper. People often want guns to be the blame when it is actually the people who are responsible for the wrongdoing. 8. Kopel, David B. "The Long and the Short of the Handgun Debate." (2012). Kopel gives excellent commentary on an article that appeared in the Washington Post on June 22, 1992. He gives examples of what could happen if handguns were to be banned, such as an increase of violence because long rifles are more deadly. Kopel says, the confiscation of all handgunswould make the national disease of violence even worse. Examples of his what would happen have already shown to be true as very few gun owners actually comply with government ruling such as turning in firearms or registering them. Not only does Kopel say that 15-20% of American households would ignore the ban, but it would also make the country more dangerous and increase crime. Kopel acknowledges the fact that gun prohibitionists mean well but may not choose the most logical answer out there. This source is very useful. The information seems to be reliable and it gives an unbiased, educated look at what the future might hold. That is the basis for my research and the purpose of this paper. I want this paper to educate and inform so that people can make their own decisions on the ongoing gun-control debate. There is a lot of information from this commentary that I could incorporate into my paper. The consequences would be a good addition to my paper because I am standing on the anti-gun control side. The consequences will add a sense of urgency to the paper and possibly it can give a sense of civil duty to protect the country by allowing concealed weapons so that criminal activity will decrease. I think that the information is very relevant to my research, topic, and line of inquiry. 9. "TEN MYTHS ABOUT GUN CONTROL." TEN MYTHS ABOUT GUN CONTROL. Duke University, 1994. Web. 23 Mar. 2014. The myths in this article are things that are usually said to persuade people in one direction or another when they can be false. This source gives the top ten myths and gives information on why they are false and why people believe these things. Some of these things I have heard in other sources.

This source is a little biased to the anti-gun control. I can see how some of the statements are trying to persuade the reader to be anti-gun control as well but I dont think that the bias has an effect on the credibility of the source. The source gives facts to support the myth debunking. I plan to use this source as a way to show what a lot of people think about guns and use it as an advantage to prove my point that I want to make in the paper. Some of the myths are irrelevant to my topic so I will not be using them in my essay. The most relevant myth is Concealed carry laws are dangerous. This part I can use easily. Although this source is older, I believe that 10. "Gun Control Facts." By James D. Agresti and Reid K. Smith. Just Facts, September 13, 2010. Revised 2/11/13. http://justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp. Web. 23 Mar. 2014. Just Facts is a resource for people to turn to for straight up facts and they are an unbiased resource site. I cant begin to describe all of the information that they give access to. They give information for ownership, crime, criminal sources of guns, right to carry laws, and even the constitution its self. This site strives to only present the most reliable information they can find and nothing that is subjective. This seems to be reliable because they tell the reader as soon as they get on the site in the introductory statements. After reading many of the facts, they are not swaying one way or another so I believe that they are a credible resource. The goal of this source is to supply my paper with educated, unbiased information for the reader so that they can have an opinion for themselves at the end of the paper. The facts will be useful in my paper because I can back up the points that I want to make with educated facts. This is different than my other resources because this is more of a list of facts rather than a book or an article that people put opinion in. These are just raw facts.
