MDyer_EF310-01_Unit 8 Assignment Introduction

For the Unit 8 assignment, I was given the option of 4 individuals listed in my textbook, and was assigned the task of assessing and evaluating the client along with make any recommendations. I chose to perform this exercise using Marsha. Marsha is a 51 year old female interested in exercise and a gym membership.

PAR-Q Rating, Health Status, General Medical History, Risk Factors and Precautions, and Medications

Using a form located in Thygerson & Thygerson, 2009, I evaluated my clients Par-Q rating. My client answered no to all of the health related questions, resulting in me determining that she did not in fact have to consult her healthcare provider prior to performing any physical activity. Using health history forms located in Howley and Franks, 2007, I evaluated my clients health history. This included current and past illnesses, medications, and potential risk factors. My client currently is on no medications. Due to my client not having a physical examination in the last three years and her familys health history, prior to performing any physical activity, I informed my client of a few exercises we would be performing during the evaluation and instructed her to get permission from her healthcare provider prior to continuing with the evaluation.

After getting permission from her healthcare provider, I chose to have my client perform a few of the exercises listed on a functional test found in Howley and Franks, 2007.

Health and Lifestyle Behaviors

My client does not exercise regularly, has a job that requires very little physical activity, and has no active leisure pursuits. She is interested in joining a gym and performing physical activity for weight loss.

Body Composition

My client is 51 years old, weighs 240 pounds, and is five feet and five inches tall. By using the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator found on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, I was able to determine that my client falls into the obese category for BMI. Her current BMI is 39.9, for her height, a normal weight range would be from 115 to 154 pounds.

Readiness for Change Upon assessing my clients readiness for change, I discovered that she was one the right path for change. Due to her interest in weight loss and exercise, my client falls into stage 2 of the readiness for change model. This stage is the contemplation stage.

MDyer_EF310-01_Unit 8 Assignment Motivational Strategies and Techniques In order to improve on her current physical activity routine, I discovered that my client needs education on physical activity in general. After careful consideration, I have determined that three areas my client needs to focus on are setting small attainable goals, education, and slowly working her way up to more vigorous physical activity. By setting small attainable goals, it makes the bigger goal of making physical activity a habit seem easily attainable and enjoyable. Knowing the benefits of a healthy food

intake and exercise are not always enough to motivate a person to change. By not only educating herself on the benefits, but the consequences of not changing, may assist with motivating my client to understand why such a change is so important.

Recommendations Physical Activity Recommendations: My client should begin a light exercise program, and slowly work her way up to moderate to vigorous physical activities. Nutrition Recommendations: Create an account with www.choosemyplate.gov and begin documenting food intake. By tracking food intake and breaking down calories and nutrition, it will be easier to determine where to improve. My client should try to avoid gaining any additional weight, and watch her caloric intake in order to assist in the process of weight loss.
