SYST16529 Where do you fit in the SDLC?

Tutorial Week 3

When you graduate, what do you want to do? What is your career goal? What is your objective? From the list below, pick one of the options which appeals to you: Systems Analyst: The systems analyst must understand user needs during the initial phase of the system development life cycle (SDLC). Then the systems analyst should document user requirements and functional specifications, and create high-level design documents that are used by programmers to create an application. The Systems Administrator configures user accounts, allots mass storage space, and installs software on systems. The system administrator also adds and configures new workstations and peripherals. Infrastructure operations and maintenance controls the information processing facility, or IPF, personnel. Infrastructure development and maintenance may require free access to the entire system. Network management: Each LAN has a network administrator who controls components of the network such as routers, switches, firewalls, network segmentation, performance management, and remote access. The administrator needs to ensure that various network-related issues like transmission links are operating properly, only authorized hardware and software are being used in the organization, and systems are being backed up. Applications development and maintenance; Software engineer/developer. These roles develop new code or modify existing applications; they do not work in the production environment to make changes to the production programs or application data. Media management helps in maintaining inventory, moving media, maintaining version control, and configuring program management. Project management: Project managers generally report to a project management office or to the development organization. The IS auditor should ensure that the employees who report to project managers ensure completion of IS initiatives by making the best possible use of the allocated funds and reporting to the steering committee about the progress of the project. The Web designer is responsible for the appearance and layout of the corporate website and is typically highly versed in HTML as well as graphic design tools and processes. Vendor and outsource management helps purchasers on issues related to outsourcing, tracks the service levels decided for the vendors, and reports their findings to the management. For data entry, organizations may use automated systems that including barcode readers or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, also known as SCADA systems. Week 1 Page 1

Database administration includes providing computer-oriented data definitions and modifying them for performance improvement , implementing tools to optimize databases , testing and evaluating optimization tools and programs, imparting training to programmers about database structures, and resolving their queries, enforcing various controls to secure databases - database definition controls, access controls, update controls, and concurrency controls, tracking database usage and performance statistics and adjusting the database accordingly, and implementing database backup and recovery. Security administration maintains the access rules created for data and other IT resources. The security administrator should also provide security for the issuance and maintenance of authorized user IDs and passwords, track security violations, and take corrective actions to maintain security. Additionally, the security administrator should review, evaluate, and suggest changes to security policies, develop and track a security awareness program for employees, evaluate security strengths, and detect possible threats to the organizational security. A security architect should understand the requirements and recommendations of the compliance, risk management, and audit functions for security. The IS auditor should ensure that the security architect incorporates these into the security policies and architecture. Service desk: The IS auditor should ensure that the service desk uses a defined and documented procedure to track all issues that are reported, resolved, or escalated so that the issues can be analyzed. The procedure can be used to monitor user groups and improve IPF services. The instructor will give you a few moments to decide, and then declare your interest. After you declare you will be asked to join others with the same interest in a group. As a group now, research your job by doing the following: Visit job websites: Visit 2 job websites of your choice, they can include mega sites such as: www.monster.ca www.jobshop.ca www.workopolis.com and also:
