Listing of Test Specimens for Steel Moment Connection Tests

Compiled by Kurt McMullin San Jose State University June 1997

Research Tests from 1942 through 1996

This listing represents the available published literature on rigid steel moment-resisting frame connections. The purpose of the list is to allow for structural engineers to obtain a better understanding of the experimental test data available for different configurations of beam-to-column subassemblies. It was initially compiled as a part of my doctoral studies at the University of California at Berkeley. In my current role as an Assistant Professor at San Jose State University, I have been assisted in expanding the list though the research of my students. Their assistance in expanding the list is greatly appreciated.

NOTES: 1. Flange connection types: welded= full penetration weld with no rathole, full pen weld= traditional pre-Northridge connection, FP Pen= flange reinforcing plate with full pen weld through both beam flange and plate, VP Pen= vertical plates added to flange with fillet welds to column full pen weld to beam flange. 2. Web connection types: bolted= traditional pre-Northridge shear plate welded to column and bolted to web, P bolted= some bolts included for erection or service load that may or may not carry the full shear requirements for the connection, P W= full penetration weld between beam web and column flange. 3. Mode of failure: L.B. = local buckling, Frac. = fracture, Yield = yielding occurred in connection but testing was stopped before complete failure occurred, None = testing was stopped before any failure was established. 4. N = number of cycles of test, M means monotonic test.
