WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION The concept of Positive Parenting Plus is to enhance and focus on the personal self esteem of adults. The goal is to F.I.R.E. (focus, inspire, revitalize, equip) parents to better care for their children and to ultimately improve personal growth and development in the skill of parenting. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES Positive Parenting Plus Workshops will utilize practical strategies, hands on materials and learning activities to: Identify self care techniques Identify how personal self-esteem impacts the role of parenting Examine personal perceptions of the role of parenting HOW LEARNING WILL OCCUR Learning will occur through active participation and presentation using powerpoint. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE Components: Needs Assessment: (Prior to the Workshop Date) The following understanding of the Target Audience is assessed during Consultant client meeting. Needs of population Number of participants Organizational goals and objectives THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (Pre-Planning/Set Up) 45 minutes prior to participant arrival Arrange room (seating, tables) Motivational charts with affirmations strategically arranged around the learning environment Powerpoint presentation set up Individual learning packets distributed to tables/seatings WORKSHOP OUTLINE 10-15 Minutes (dependent upon number of participants) Opening welcome and introductions Agenda Review (schedule, topics, objectives) Housekeeping Review (breaks, locations within building, lavatory)

Segment Design (All timed segments are dependent upon the number of participants) Material is divided into timed intervals. Each segment will contain the following Warm Up (5 minutes or less). Exercises encouraging participants to think about the topic that will be covered. Powerpoint Presentation: will correlate with topics, information will be presented in fullkeeping adults engaged. Activity (30-40 minutes): all activities are designed to: keep participants engaged and moving provide opportunity for personal reflections present time for practice of what was learned to share prior knowledge and experiences Debriefing (5 minutes): following each activity participant will be afforded time to discuss what was learned, ask questions, share reactions, and to make certain material is understood. Breaks (5-10 minutes): participants will be allowed to move about, personal time, view materials. Breaks are managed to ensure staying on task and on target. Evaluation: at the conclusion of the workshop, a short evaluation form will be administered to determine whether or not participants found the learning valuable. Hand-Outs and Resources: Participant Packets Materials are distributed as a packet. All materials are correlated to the segment topics. Welcome Parents Introduction of Presenter Ice Breaker (See list below) Introduction of Workshop Topic Discussion generated from the following three questions o Is parenting a job or a calling? o What is self esteem? o What is your parenting style?
Activity: Personal Introspective Questionnaire Time: 10-20 minutes Materials: Powerpoint slides, questionnaire A Self-Esteem questionnaire with 10 yes/no questions designed to determine the need for self improvement. Questions are read aloud by presenter and participants select their answers. Ice Breaker Activities Ice breaker selection based upon number of participants Activity: Express Yourself (Small Group) Materials: Song title-Express Yourself by Charles Wright, CD player Participants are given instructions to introduce themselves by dancing to the front of the room to the song Express Yourself. Participants state their first name and number of children in their family. The audience is directed to encourage each parent as they perform (clapping, cheering, etc.) Activity: Push the Envelope (Large Group) Materials: envelopes, markers, action cards Envelopes are prepared with an enclosed card and a specific action written on card. Examples: Sing a verse of a selected song (i.e. Amazing Grace), perform a specific dance (i.e. Cupid Shuffle); rap a nursery rhyme (i.e. Mary Had A Little Lamb). Each envelope has a written number on outside in a specific ink color. Parents will select an envelope

upon arrival. Parents are instructed to not to open envelopes until given directives. Participants are then instructed to find a person in the room with the same ink color on outside of envelope. Once they locate the person, they introduce themselves (name and number of children). Parents are then grouped according to the envelope color. At the count of three, envelopes are opened. Participants then must read the action indicated and then perform the action as a group. Activity: Marooned on an Island Time: 15-20 minutes Materials: flip chart paper, number cards, prizes (optional) As participants enter the room, a greeter distributes the numbers. The participants select numbers 1, 2, or 3. As directed parents are instructed to group themselves according to the numbers, they will introduce themselves (name, number of children). Participants will then determine a name for their group. The presenter gives the following instructions: unfortunately you will be relocated and stranded on a deserted island for an indefinite amount of time. You may only bring one item with you. You have only a few minutes to pack. No cell phones are al lowed on the island. They are then directed to respond to the following, listing answers on flip chart: o What object did you decide to bring? o What do you plan to do with it? o Why did you choose the object? Participants will work as a group on their answers, choose a spokesperson, and report as a group. Prizes are given for the most creative answers listed on the flip chart. Activity: Human Weather Report Designed for groups too large to interact Materials: pictures Utilizing four large pictures for weather forecasting: sunny, cloudy, rainy, and stormy, presenter asks participants to stand according to how they are feeling at the moment based on the picture. Specific instructions are given based on the weather picture. For example: o Sunny stand and wave hands o Cloudy move head from side-to-side and yawn o Rainy put hand on head o Stormy jump up and down This activity serves as a great lead/segues into the subject of self esteem

Introduction
Self Esteem Self-Esteem can best be defined as the extent to which a person values, approves of, appreciates, prizes or likes him or herself. In essence it is described as a favorable or unfavorable attitude toward the self. Healthy self-esteem encompasses self-acceptance, confidence, and positive personal beliefs. Studies show that at least 85% or more of the worlds population suffer from some degree of the lack of self-esteem. It is important to understand that this deficit does not apply to children only. Researchers are becoming increasingly aware that the educational outcomes of youth are facilitated (or inhibited) by a range of how parents transfer personal self-esteem. Parenting styles which are directly related to ones personal self concept and beliefs has also been found to predict child well-being in the following domainssocial competence, academic performance, psychological development and problem behavior. Research based upon parent interviews, child studies and observation indicate that healthy parents self-esteem is the key ingredient to a successful child. Positive Parenting Plus seeks to concentrate on building the adult self esteem. The workshop has three key segments: 1. The Tour of Self: understanding the impact of self values principles and beliefs on parenting style. Tools for Successful Parenting: embracing and enjoying the parenting journey by practicing personal self esteem building techniques. The Parent Make Over: understanding and practicing the art of self care.

Concept: High and Low Self Esteem Objectives: To provide information and opportunity for participants to understand the foundational influences upon personal self-esteem. To introduce and view results of G. U. I. (growing under influences) Materials: Power point presentation

When a negative word is yelled out, the receiving parent must let air out of the balloon. (Examplegreat, wonderful, fabulous, stupid, slow, messy, thoughtful, dumb, etc). Activity: Super Power Parents Materials: Serious Self Care Booklet Powerpoint slides (9-10) Copies of Serious Self Care booklet (found in participants packet) are reviewed and discussed. Participants are instructed to follow self care techniques for four (4) weeks. Directions are discussed for daily and weekly instructions. A self care assessment worksheet is distributed. Participants will complete and analyze assessment worksheet. Select from worksheet one area to improve. Participants will discuss Ten Self Care Techniques, chart their present status on the Wheel of Life and where they desire to be. Parents are encouraged to find a personal self care accountability partner to: share the experience monitor progress hold accountable for self commitment Parents are to report to accountability partner at the end of each week. Presenter reminds participants that the self care activity is a four week process. Activity: Construct a Personal Image Board Materials: 50 index cards with verbage Magazine pages, preselected Glue sticks Scissors Poster board ( 11 x 17) Utilizing poster board, glue sticks, pictures, phrases and words from magazines each participant will construct a personal image board. Pictures for the image board may be based upon the participants goals, life, philosophy, what they love or wish for in life and positive words and phrases. Participants are instructed to place the finished product on their refrigerator as a positive daily visual.

Workshop Conclusion
Evaluation: Participants are asked to complete an evaluation form. When the form is completed and collected, participants get a Super Parent badge.
