Who is First4Skills? First4Skills is one of the UKs leading providers of work-based vocational qualications, with almost 30 years experience in the delivery of exible training solutions to both local businesses and multi-site national organisations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
We have access to government funding which enables us to provide quality funded BTEC Apprenticeships, that will provide a signicant contribution towards vocational training. As First4Skills works in partnership with funding bodies, we can assess your employees eligibility to qualify for support. What do we offer?

We recently entered into a partnership with Pearson enabling us to provide BTEC qualications** in addition to our previous qualications including Foundation Learning.

Today there are a wide range of Apprenticeships in more than 190 sectors ...but this government still doesnt think there are enough and even in a climate of cuts has committed additional resources to fund a further 50,000 adult Apprenticeships this year above the level inherited by the previous government, rising to 75,000 by the year 2014-15. That means over 20,000 adults can start an Apprenticeship, and there will be a healthy tranche of 16-18 year olds too. Retail
By 2017, 214,000 retail jobs are expected to be created across the UK as a result of expansion and a further 1.2 million jobs will need to be lled as a result of staff turnover. The retail qualications offered by First4Skills are essential for equipping your employees with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a competitive and changeable retail environment. Our experience ranges from working with small local businesses to major blue chip retailers. Our current clients include Currys, New Look and Brantano. Designed for those working in a customer facing role, our retail qualications focus on the importance of excellent customer service and can be applied across all retail sectors. Our portfolio of vocational retail qualications doesnt simply focus on selling products or services; effective teamwork, communication and health & safety are all important elements of the programmes on offer.
Customer Service
At the beginning of 2009, customer service based roles equated to 7.5% of the UK labour market. Providing your employees with the best customer care skills means your customers gain a positive impression of both your organisation and your workforce. A vocational qualication in customer service encourages your employees to create and maintain strong, lasting relationships by providing them with the skills they require to compete within a tough, customer driven environment. Some of our customer service clients include Primark and Rowlands Pharmacy. Designed for those working in a role that incorporates customer interaction on a daily basis, these qualications also equip employees with a sound understanding of customer service policies within the organisation, foster effective communication skills and gives employees the ability to handle customer queries efciently.
Market Overview
In 2010 Brantano made the decision to start taking apprentices into our business and wanted to use this scheme as a way of developing the right people so that they would become supervisors and managers of the future. Hospitality
There are currently around 185,800 hospitality, leisure and travel businesses across the UK. The sector currently employs in the region of 2 million people, accounting for 1 in 14 UK jobs. First4Skills hospitality qualications range from food processing to hospitality supervision, so you can rely on us to have the expertise to enhance the skills of your entire hospitality team, whatever their specialism. We have experience of working with a vast array of organisations from small sandwich shops to national restaurant chains and some of our current hospitality clients include Frankie & Bennys, Subway and Chiquito. Also designed to develop effective communication and customer service skills amongst your workforce, our hospitality qualications equip learners with the expertise they require to succeed in a highly competitive hospitality market.
Team Leading/Management
By 2014, it is estimated that twothirds of all jobs in England will be held by people with at least Level 3 qualications. Advanced vocational qualications such as team leading and management are vital to the success of any business reliant on commercially aware, forward looking managers. Employers have claimed that during the current economic climate, hiring new managers and leaders is the fourth hardest job role to ll. First4Skills currently works with a number of clients to deliver team leading and management qualications to their workforce, including BSM and Carphone Warehouse. First4Skills delivers these qualications to businesses operating across an array of sectors, from retail to hospitality, equipping employees with the essential skills and qualications to become great leaders.

Celebrate achievement
UK funding for Apprenticeships has increased by almost a quarter between 2007/08 and 2009/10, to over 1 billion. The National Apprenticeship Service
First4Skills forged a partnership with retail footwear giant Brantano back in 2005 to offer more than 1,750 staff the opportunity to gain an NVQ Level 2 in Retail Skills. Brantano recently decided to work with First4Skills and EDI (First4Skills awarding body) to map their existing in-house training scheme with the new Retail Level 2 Diploma. Through the mapping process, EDI devised a training programme to enable staff to extend their six month mandatory in-house training by just three months to achieve a nationally-recognised qualication. First4Skills worked closely with the staff at Brantano to deliver the additional three month training programme which helped employees achieve the qualication while continuing with their everyday job. Louise Williams, Training Ofcer at Brantano, said: At Brantano we are very keen to provide our employees with the best possible training and opportunities that will benet them during their career at Brantano and beyond. When reassessing our training programme
we wanted to work with an awarding body that had a strong vocational orientation and that completely understood our business and our goals. Our ethos is to nurture our employees professional and personal development needs to enable them to work their way up the company to more senior positions; training is a major part of this. Through the process of mapping our training to the national qualications, we have gained a real perspective on the standards that we should be expecting in terms of operations, customer service and working in retail. The commitment from Brantano in offering the Retail Level 2 Diploma to its staff shows how seriously it takes customer service and its employees personal development.
