English for Science and Technology 6355/1

Section A

General Guidelines

A response deemed to have satisfied the examination requirements must satisfy the
following criteria:
• Spelling and grammatical accuracy are mandatory
• Only one response is allowed for each question / blank
 Each question / blank with multiple responses correct will be awarded
only one mark.
 Each question / blank with multiple responses partially correct will not be
awarded any mark.
• Total lifting of entire sentence(s) is/are not permitted.
• Meaningful paraphrasing and correct use of own words are permitted.

Part 1

1 • acute kidney failure


2 • end-stage renal disease

• nephritis (chronic inflammation of the small blood


vessels of the kidneys)
3 • uncontrolled hypertension/high blood pressure
4 • chronic infection of the kidneys (usually from birth)
5 • obstructions (such as kidney stones) (which can block
6 drainage and can cause damage or infection)
• diabetes
• analgesics (pain relieving drugs) taken in large amounts
and over long periods
• some forms of inherited kidney disease

• dieting (regulating intake of salt, water and protein)


7 • diuretics (drugs to increase urine flow) to help avoid
8 buildup in the body
9 • antibiotics (to prevent or limit the damage to kidneys
10 caused by infections
• special drugs to relieve symptoms
• surgery (to remove obstructions)
• dialysis
Part 2

• Satisfactory ability to analyse and / or justify points of view.

• Language sufficiently accurate.

• Limited fulfillment of task.

D 7 – 12
• Limited ability to analyse and / or justify points of view.
• Some attempts to organise ideas.
