Congratulations on your wins at

nationals and your selection for

Glasgow. It must have been a pretty
good season?
Well, I actually started the season
o sick, but Ive come through the
last half with some good times. Win-
ning the double was denitely a nice
way to nish.
Whats next?
Ive just had a week and a half o,
to get my body recovered and recoup
for the next block of training, before
I go to Europe in the winter.
What are your plans for the Eu-
ropean season?
Im heading over afer my exams
at the start of June, and will hope-
fully race in some Diamond League
events, before the Glasgow games at
the end of July. Ill be based in Eng-
land with my anc, Sam Petty, whos
also a runner.
Hes moving to New Zealand at
the end of the year and were getting
married, so this will be my last sea-
son running as a Smit.
How did you get started in
athletics?
I joined the North Canterbury
Athletic Club when I was 10 . . . my
parents didnt want me to start too
young, and my coach at primary
school actually told them not to en-
ter me, because a lot of people who
start so young burn out. So I was
pretty casual until I was 13, then I
got Maria Hassan as my coach, who
Ive been with ever since. I started
doing really well, and began to love
it. Watching the Olympics on TV
growing up was really inspiring.
And the last couple of years have
seen you make big strides?
Yeah, I only just missed out on go-
ing to the Olympics in 2012. I met
the world qualifying standard, but
not the higher New Zealand stan-
dard. I went from running the 800m
in two minutes three seconds to run-
ning it in two minutes at, so I dont
think I would have been quite ready
for it, because I hadnt expected to do
that good.
Last year I came fourth at the
World University Games, which
qualied me for the world champi-
onships. Ten I ran at a Diamond
League event in London, which was
an amazing experience.
Tell me more.
My performance at the uni games
meant I was qualied, so I emailed
the organisers about getting a run.
First they said, no, sorry, were com-
pletely full but then someone pulled
out four days beforehand, and they
emailed saying, a space has come up,
do you still want to come along? I
was so excited and so nervous; com-
ing up to the track there were all
these cameras ashing and it was so
noisy, but it was amazing. I got fh,
which was pretty good against the
best girls in the world.
My anc got to come along and
experience it too, which was great,
and we got to meet Usain Bolt.
Was he as great as he seems on
TV?
He was so cool really nice and
funny. We caught him between
races, but he wasnt in a rush to get
away. Hes an amazing ambassador
for the sport.
You mentioned exams before I
take it youre studying?
Yeah, Im doing a Bachelor of Arts
in education and psychology at the
Canterbury University.
How do you t that in around
the racing?
Im doing it part-time, so its
coming along slowly, but I love the
balance it gives me. I wont be do-
ing second semester at all this year,
which will be dierent because Ive
been studying ever since I lef school.

What made you choose teaching?
I just love children it was al-
ways my dream job. I love how theyre
so enthusiastic, and I like the vari-
ety of subjects you get to teach, and I
want to help those little kids do their best.
What are your goals for the rest of the
year?
Te main one is to break the two-minute
barrier in the 800m. Im only three-hun-
dredths of a second away. Its a big psycho-
logical barrier a number that starts with
a one sounds much better and once Im
past it, I hope to keep progressing from
there.
I want to get placings in Diamond League
events, and then I want to make the nals in
Glasgow, and even better, get a medal.
What other interests do you have?
I love skiing and snow sports, for a bit of
fun.
My faith is really important to me I come
from a Christian family and I go to Arise
Church. And of course baking, reading,
watching movies all that sort of thing.
Lastly, who are some of the athletes you
look up to?
Denitely Nick Willis, and then theres
Toni Hodgkinson, who has the New Zea-
land womens 800m record. Ive been in
touch with her a bit and shes been really
great.
And of course Nikki Hamblin. She
was amazing at the last Commonwealth
Games, with her two silvers. Even though were
competing against each other, we get on real
well.

Hamilton (pictured right with sta mem-
ber Kristina Macdonald) was one of the
stars of the show when Countdown Fer-
rymead re-opened yesterday. Te store,
which was badly damaged in the Febru-
ary 2011 earthquake, has been completely
rebuilt on its former site.
Te store was opened by Deputy May-
or Vicki Buck, and will be providing 150
jobs for the community including 112
new faces to the Countdown team.
Store manager Aaron Murray said:
Its fantastic to see Ferrymead standing
again. Were so excited to have a number
of the original Ferrymead team return-
ing, many of whom had worked here for
more than a decade when the earthquake
happened.
Clifon Hill resident Nicola Roake
(right), was the rst shopper through the
door yesterday.
Im very excited and happy to be back
at Countdown, and Im looking forward
to having a slow walk around the store.
She has been a Countdown customer
for 15 years, eight of those at Ferrymead.
