Legal Disclaimer ================================ 1. WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND NOTES ================================ Please read the following Warnings, Cautions, and Notes before using the Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility application (also called Intel XTU): Warning: Altering PC memory frequency and/or voltage may (1) reduce system stability and use life of the system, memory and processor; (2) cause the processor and other system components to fail; (3) cause reductions in system performance; (4) cause additional heat or other damage; and (5) affect system data integrity. Intel assumes no responsibility that the memory, if used with altered clock frequencies and/or voltages, will be fit for any particular purpose. Check with memory manufacturer for warranty and additional details. Warning: Altering clock frequency and/or voltage may (1) reduce system stability and useful life of the system and processor; (2) cause the processor and other system components to fail; (3) cause reductions in system performance; (4) cause additional heat or other damage; and (5) affect system data integrity. Intel has not tested, and does not warranty, the operation of the processor beyond its specifications. Warning: Adjusting cooling parameters is intended for testing purposes only. Adjusting a fan manually allows you to completely shut off the fan or set a fan so low that it may not cool your system sufficiently. This could result in overheating your system and possibly damaging or shortening the life of system components. Adequate system cooling is required for optimal system performance. However, excessive fan use can produce unwanted noise. Using

Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility, you can adjust fan settings to balance performance and acoustic considerations for your system. You can use or modify Intel(R) Precision Cooling technology settings or you can control the fans yourself manually. Caution: When manually adjusting settings or when running the auto tuning functions, remember to not do other work on the system (such as write a document or browse the Internet). Please leave the system alone and wait for all automatic reboots to complete to prevent any loss of open work files or data. Caution: If the system hangs or becomes inoperable (black screen) during a planned auto tuning reboot, it is possible that the system was pushed too far and is unable to recover. You will need to reset the system which may include using the jumper on the desktop board, or shutting down the system by removing power. Intel recommends manually adjusting system settings in small reasonable increments. Note: Note: Note: Microsoft* .NET Framework (version 3.5 or higher) is required. Temperature measurements are approximate and should not be used to validate thermal solutions. The shorter term 'CPU' in this document will always refer to the processor that is used by the computer.

================ 2. INTRODUCTION ================ Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel XTU) lets you modify the processor (CPU) and memory tuning parameters to ensure system stability, to optimize performance, and to control cooling and acoustic characteristics. The Intel XTU interface displays provide real time feedback of relevant information so you can observe the effects of changing various parameters. In Addition, with this application you can: - Monitor the voltage, power supply, and fan speeds. - Perform stress tests to demonstrate system and settings stability. - Conduct performance testing to measure the impact of system configuration and setting modifications. Intel XTU user interface has five main sections. Navigation and Views -- The functions of Intel XTU. You system information, have an change system settings in a stability of your system in settings in profiles. navigation area lists all of the major can see the details about your system in automated overclocking session with Autotune, free form in manual tuning, test the stress tests, and manage sets of system

Two views are available: full view and monitoring view. The toggle on the top-right corner of the window switches between these two views. You can also resize each the sections for tuning controls, the system table, the system graphs, and the system monitors by dragging their borders. Tuning Controls -- This area of the user interface displays the controls for changing the system settings in manual tuning. For Autotune, stress tests and profiles, this area displays the settings for these features.

System Table -- The system table displays information about the current system settings and a summary of your changes. The system table is customizable. You can add or remove items and columns based on your overclocking strategy in the system table preferences. System Graphs -- The system graphs show measured system values over a period of time. The system graphs update live as changes are detected in the system. You can customize the system graphs to show the data you need for your overclocking strategy in the system graphs preferences. System Monitors -- The system monitors are dedicated views of selected system values. They display the range of the value, averages, and the current value. The monitors change color if the monitored values fall into warning or critical zones. For more information, please refer to the help file for the Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ======================= Hardware Requirements --------------------- Currently, Intel XTU v2.1 is supported only on Intel(R) Desktop Boards DP67BG, DX58SO2 and DX58OG. - A video graphics card with hardware-based support for Microsoft* DirectX* 10 or higher is strongly recommended. - The minimum supported display resolution must be 1024 x 768 or higher. - The best overclocking feature set and results are achieved with Intel(R) Extreme Series processors. Intel XTU v2.1 will also run on non-Extreme Series processors, but the CPU overclocking features are limited. Operating System ---------------Intel XTU v2.1 software should be installed on your specific Extreme Series Intel Desktop Board with one of the following operating systems: - Microsoft Windows* 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) for Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions.

- Microsoft Windows Vista* operating systems (32-bit and 64-bit) for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions. Note: If your system has other applications running that could prevent a system reboot, please close those applications before starting an installation to protect you from loss of any unsaved data. Note: It is recommended to disable Sleep state functions in BIOS before you use the Autotune feature to prevent the system going into a non-responsive condition during the auto tuning process. Note: The Windows Vista Starter Edition and the Windows 7 Starter Edition are not supported. Earlier operating system versions of Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, NT, 2000, ME, XP, and Server 2003 are not supported. Note: The Microsoft .NET Framework Redistribution Package software version 3.5 or higher is required and should be installed before attempting to install Intel XTU. If not installed, then the XTU installer will attempt to download and install the software from the Internet unless Intel XTU is operating in Silent mode. Limitations ----------- Only use Intel XTU v2.1 with the Intel(R) Desktop Board DP67BG, Intel(R) Desktop Board DX58SO2 and the Intel(R) Desktop Board DX58OG. - Do NOT use Intel XTU v2.1 with the older Intel Extreme Series motherboards such as the Intel(R) Desktop Board DX58SO, Intel(R) Desktop Board DP55KG, or the Intel(R) Desktop Board DP55SB). - Do not install software for Intel(R) Desktop Control Center and Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility 2.1 on the same computer. BIOS Requirements ----------------Make sure you have the appropriate BIOS installed as follows: - For Intel(R) Desktop Board DP67BG, use the BIOS: BGP6710J.86A version 1900 or newer - If Intel(R) Desktop Board DX58SO2, use the BIOS: SOX5820J.86A version 0765 or newer - If Intel(R) Desktop Board DX58OG shares the same BIOS as Desktop Board DX58SO2, use the BIOS: SOX5820J.86A version 0765 or newer If you're not sure what BIOS version is installed, restart the computer and press F2 to enter the BIOS setup. The BIOS version will be displayed. For example, BIOS DP67BG is noted as follows: BGP6710J.86A.1900.2010.xxxx.xxxx If you don't have the correct BIOS installed, you can download it from the site: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx

If needed for the example BIOS DP67BG, search on: "1900" or newer for Intel Desktop Board DP67BG CAUTION: Incrementing CPU Voltage Setting to Higher Values ---------------------------------------------------------Due to the nature of over-clocking activities, a loss of processor execution could result in loss of control from the Intel XTU application. This could occur during both manual tuning and auto tuning operation. System recovery might require: - Powering-down the system. - Performing a BIOS recovery (if needed, see BIOS Configuration Jumper settings in your board's Technical Product Specification. To find this document, search at the following URL: http://support.intel.com Then, find the desired Product and Motherboard. - Restarting the system and then using more conservative settings with the Intel XTU application. This could happen when the CPU Voltage is incremented too high for the following: - Existing settings (for example, Bus speed, Clock multiplier, Memory timing). - Cooling capability of the processor's heat sink and/or chassis cooling capability. Note that the cooling solutions (fan/heat sink and chassis cooling design) need to adequately keep the processor within its operating temperature range. Otherwise, extreme settings of the CPU Voltage may result in: Loss of processor execution. System lockup. Permanent damage to your CPU. Or combinations of the above possible results.

If a higher CPU voltage is still desired after understanding the above risks, then a high performance cooling solution and improved chassis airflow is required. Please review Section 1 in this readme (Warnings. Cautions and Notes) for other possible impacts of parameter modifications. ================ 4. INSTALLATION ================ To install Intel XTU v2.1: 1. First log-in as an administrator. 2. Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed as described in Section 3 (System Requirements) under the information for BIOS Requirements. If no BIOS update is needed, continue on to Step 3. If a BIOS update is needed, go to: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/

KNOWN ISSUES AND WORKAROUNDS ================================ After installing Intel XTU 2.1, if you encounter issues that are not documented below, please contact customer support at: http://support.intel.com/support/9089.htm Try to capture a screen shot of the error message and have the following information in advance about your system; specific desktop board product code, installed BIOS version, the operating system (such as Windows 7 or Windows Vista and if 32- or 64-bit), and the user language of the operating system. Issues for Intel(R) Desktop Board DP67BG ---------------------------------------No current issues.

Issues for Intel(R) Desktop Boards DX58SO2 and DX58OG ----------------------------------------------------ISSUE-1 -- The system is unable to recover after modifying the

=======

Host Clock Frequency (HCF) to an aggressive value.

DESCRIPTION - The system sometimes hangs when one tries to over-clock the HCF to an aggressive value. The proposed frequency which gets programmed in during the next reboot can cause system hangs. WORKAROUND - When the HCF is taken beyond its operating limit, the watchdog timer will typically reset the system. In some instances when changes are made to the HCF, it is more likely to get into a hang situation where the watchdog timer cannot reset the system. The only workaround for the hang condition is to restart the system by either pressing and holding the power button for 4 seconds or by removing the AC line power from the system (such as pulling the computer's plug). This action will reset the system with the system booting up with default settings. STATUS - Will not Fix -- Also refer to both "Caution" notes in Section 1 of this readme (Warnings, Cautions and Notes).

ISSUE-2 -- The voltage increase percentage calculation becomes ======= incorrect if an over-specification value is aggressively used during autotuning. STATUS - Will not Fix -- Please refer to both "Caution" notes in Section 1 of this readme (Warnings, Cautions and Notes).

ISSUE-3 -- The actual Autotune time remaining to completion might ======= exceed the initial proposed timeframe. DESCRIPTION - The initial system-proposed timeframe for Autotuning is always an estimation that might take longer or shorter when the actual autotuning process occurs. STATUS - Will not Fix ISSUE-4 -- XTU will not load on a system booted in UEFI mode. ======= DESCRIPTION - XTU will not load on a system that was configured in UEFI mode. An error message will state "The Extreme Tuning Utility service could not be contacted" and block XTU from starting. STATUS - Under investigation
