E.ST.05.11 Design a model that of the solar system that shows the relative order and scale of the planets, dwarf planets, comets and asteroids to the sun

Level of Cognitive Demand

Synthesis The learner will design a model of the solar system by using toilet paper squares that they make a scalar model of the planets distance from the sun with 75% proficiency according to the rubric.

Answer
The student will design a model map of the solar system in which they will be responsible for making it to scale in terms of toilet paper squares. The values were calculated in a previous lesson but the students must be able to apply the values to a solar system model. The student will design a model map of the solar system. The model map will demonstrate the students ability to include components of a solar system design: distances & planets. This is not assessing accuracy. The student will use the mnemonic device to memorize the order of the planets so that they are able to create a Model Map without assistance and can work together with classmates to sequence 8 planets in order. The student will work with 2 other group members to create the actual model of the solar system. They must score at least a 3 on the rubric by including all the correct components of the model. See rubric.
