(http://college.wfu.edu/las/wpcontent/uploads/2012/02/hispanic-transatlantic-studies.jpg)The Department of Romance Languages and the Latin American and Latino Studies Program at Wake Forest University will host Dr. Jose Mara Rodrguez Garca, Associate Professor of Romance Studies at Duke University, on February 24th for a lecture on the emerging field of Hispanic Transatlantic Studies. Dr. Garcia will discuss the development of the field and the more recent contributions made to its study. In recent years, transatlantic approaches to cultural production have gained increasing prominence within academic fields ranging from history and geography to literary studies. Transatlantic perspectives have encouraged fruitful scholarly exchanges among literary critics, historians, linguists, geographers, sociologists, and anthropologists. In particular, a growing number of prominent scholars of Peninsular Spanish and Latin American literature and culture have shown a strong interest in revisiting the circulation of intellectual, political, and cultural influences between the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean. This new and exciting area of intellectual inquiry has also broadened the narrow disciplinary horizons of Hispanic Studies. Wake Forest University will host a three-day conference on Hispanic Transatlantic Studies later this year from April 19th through April 21st. The lecture will serve as a precursor to and preview of the conference. The conference is being co-organized by Dr. Garcia and by Dr. Jose Luis Venegas, Assistant Professor of Romance Languages. More information on the conference can be found on its website(http://www.wfu.edu/romancelanguages/Hispanic_Transatlantic_Studies/index.html). The lecture will take place in Room 145 of Greene Hall and will commence at 4:30 P.M. Admissions is free and open to the general public. For more information please contact Dr. Venegas at venegajl@wfu.edu(mailto:venegajl@wfu.edu).
