CLAIRE INTRODUCTION
Produced exclusively for 8Dio by Colin O'Malley with the guidance and support of Troels Folmann, the Claire Bassoon Virtuoso is a soulful and highly expressive instrument. The approach renes the emotional sampling concepts that were introduced in our Adagio String series. In a nutshell: no static notes. Every note breathes naturally, capturing the true virtuosity of a world class soloist. There are many woodwind instruments on the market today. Very few of them have the emotional realism to sit out in front of an orchestra and truly carry a composition forward. This is the fundamental goal of the Claire Woodwind series. The recordings capture a world class player playing a word class instrument. The player is invested in every single note he plays.
INSTRUMENTS
Claire is designed with simplicity in mind and contains 6 core instruments. Each of these instruments contain a logical subset of articulations which are triggered via keyswitches. The core instruments are as follows: Legato Lyrical This is a owing and emotional legato performance with an emphasis on capturing the mournful and melancholy expressions of the bassoon. Articulations include: Natural - The full legato performance with full ring out in the concert hall.! MAGIC! Soft 1 - Great all around articulation for melodies. Soft 2 - Slightly more intensity for variety in softer passages. Medium - Pushing the emotion up a notch.! Strong 1 - A very dramatic gesture Strong 2 - Pushing the bassoon to ELEVEN!!!! Staccattissimo - Lively short notes with lots of variety in attack.! Marcato - Both lyrical and bold. Works for both staccato and marcato feel.
*Legato intervals turn OFF automatically for Staccattisimo and Marcato articulations
Legato Lyrical Sus Xfade This is the same as the above instrument with the exception of the F0 key switch. This triggers traditional sustained notes which can be crossfaded on the mod wheel/CC1. These sustains are as long as the player can naturally hold them without Kenny G circle breathing (: . They are left un-looped, preserving the natural character of the entrances and exits of notes, but are sufciently long for slower underscore applications. Legato Strong This instrument features a completely different recording of legato intervals with a stronger and more dramatic interpretation. With Claire (and Adagio Strings!) we do not limit ourselves to thinking in static dynamics. This strong articulation can be both soft and loud. The same is true with our lyrical legato. Be sure to use CC1 and CC11 to sculpt dynamics!!!!!
Articulations include:! Natural - The full legato performance with full ring out in the concert hall.! MAGIC! Medium 1- Great all around articulation Medium 2- Slightly more intensity. Strong 1- A dramatic gesture! Strong 2 - More intensity Strong 3 - Longer emotional arc into the note Staccattissimo - Lively short notes with lots of variety in attack.! Marcato - Both lyrical and bold. Works for both staccato and marcato feel.
General Articulations Patch This patch contains all the core essentials for bassoon writing ! Staccattissimo (9 round robin!) Marcato (2 round robins) Sustains! Minor 2nd Trills! Major 2nd Trills Bonus FX & Runs This instrument features major and minor runs along with a few foley or what we call X noises.! Feathered in they add another level of realism detail to your mockups.! Major Run Up! Major Run Down Minor Run Up Minor Run Down Breaths Instrument Valve Clicks
CONTROLS
! " " " # # # # # # # # # Dynamics (CC1/mod wheel) - Engages carefully crafted lters and volume curves to create uid dynamics without the dreaded chorusing and phasing which can destroy the air and magic of a solo woodwind sample. Expression (CC11) - Using CCs is about the ability to shape your notes in a more exible manner, and really make things breathe. Riding CC1 and CC11 will give you a steeper curve (a stronger arc into your note) - a sense that your notes are rolling forward. CC11 also allows you to create expression within a particular dynamic. In this way you can make pianissimo or forte breathe within themselves. The use of both together is the single most valuable tool I use to create realistic mockups.
Legato Speed (CC 16) - This control alters the sample start of the intervals and also adjusts some very nely tuned envelopes. The intervals and valve clicks become slightly more pronounced as you move the knob to the right. Try speed all the way up for run and arpeggio type gures, particularly when using the fast legato instrument. Legato Volume (CC12) - This control allows you to adjust the volume of the actual interval transitions, and by extension the entire natural articulation. It is set to a natural volume by default and generally can be left untouched. *Custom midi CC's can be assigned to interface knobs simply by right clicking. Legato ON/OFF (C1 MIDI Keyboard) - When legato is off all arts are polyphonic. " Release - This button turns off the natural release which triggers at the " conclusion of a legato phrase. " Bassoon II - this button alters the character of the samples to create a bassoon 2, " allowing for greater diversity in harmonic writing. *Logic users make sure No Reset is checked on the channel strip to avoid CCs defaulting to zero when DAW is stopped.
MIC POSITIONS
Claire was recorded in a world class concert hall with 3 distinct mic positions: WIDE, DECCA and CLOSE. We love the lush emotional overtones of a concert hall. At the same time we also love the guts and detail of a tighter studio recording. To this point we have not been able to get both from a single woodwind library. Achieving this was one of the fundamental goals of the Claire Woodwind series. The close mics are NOT traditional mono spots, but rather a VERY uniquely isolated stereo pair designed to mimic the detail and tight wall reection of a smaller studio. They also remain in phase with the deeper room mics. It was quite a hurtle to jump through, but the result truly captures the advantages of both types of recording spaces in a single library. For most applications we recommend favoring the close mics and feathering in decca and wide at lower levels for added depth and overtones.
By clicking on the mic position names you can assign custom output routing for each.
Thank you so much for purchasing 8DIO CLAIRE - Bassoon Virtuoso. Special thanks to Troels Folmann for his friendship and guidance on the Claire Woodwind Series. Id also like to extend deep appreciation to the programming team Tony, Pedro (aka PONY) and Cam.
