CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Name: Alicia Mendoza Grade Level: 10-11th

HS-LS1-1. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. HS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. HS-LS1-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.

HS-LS1-6. Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules. Big Ideas: DNA is comprised of four bases. When grouped into sets of 3, we get amino acids which create the structure of DNA. Numerous organelles are housed within cells, each with a specific role which allows for proper function and development of cells. Mitosis gives rise to creation of new daughter cells. Molecules such as Carbon and Oxygen may be required to aid in the proper function of cells. Some cellular processes require the aid of such molecules in other to help fuel processes.

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will become very familiar with the structure of DNA. They will know what the pyridine and purines are. Students will know the names, appearance, and function of various organelles found within cell. Students will be able to identify different phases of mitosis and what occurs at each phase. Students will know the process of cellular respiration.

Unit Summary:

For this unit we will focus on the cellular level of biology. We will begin by looking at the structure of DNA and its role in the function of life. From the nucleus, which contains the DNA, we will move on into learning about other organelles within the cell and their function(s). We will spend some time learning about cellular division such as mitosis. Lastly, we will end with looking at ways that different molecules, such as carbon and oxygen fuel metabolic

reactions that take place within cells.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Brainstorm:

Students are told to write about cells: the components of a cell, the different types of cells, and roles of each component in a cell, etc.

Formative: Role play- assign different students different organelles found in a cell and have them announce their role in a cell and have the class try to guess what organelle that student is. The students will also have to arrange themselves in the order that they would be found inside of the cell (near neighboring organelles). Completion of guided notes. Quiz- identification of organelles and their role in a cell

Summative: Project-Groups of 3-4 students will be formed and assigned to create a 3-D model of a cell including all major organelles and give a brief description of various roles for assigned organelle(s).

Student Learning Objective:

Students will know the names, appearance, and function of various organelles found within cell.

Acceptable Evidence: At the end of the unit students are asked to create a 3D model of a cell organelle and give a brief presentation of the importance of the organelle.
Acceptable Evidence: Students are asked to label and draw each phase of mitosis.

Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction

Lesson Activities: View prezi presentation and complete guided notes in order to comprehend the structure of various cells (prokaryotes, eukaryotes, animal and plant)
