Custom-made Gears, Gear Assemblies and Gearboxes

Davall Gears is an established leader in the field of custom-made gearing, a position attained by successfully applying extensive knowledge of gear design and manufacture, acquired over many years. This knowledge, combined with the use of modern technology, ensures that we are always ahead of the field and able to provide solutions to the many and varied power transmission and rotary motion problems we are faced with each year. Examples of the problems solved encompass a broad spectrum: In the industrial field we have

through prototyping to the finished production run. Davall Gears design team have considerable knowledge of the problems likely to be encountered on complicated power transmission applications. Their knowledge, aided by the use of modern computer technology, ensures a speedy solution to the majority of problems. Major companies have retained the services of the Davall design and development team in order to avail themselves of the considerable expertise it has to offer. We are proud to be acknowledged in this way. Spiradrive gear products Unique to Davall Gears, this form of right angle gearing (see opposite page) can offer a reduction in overall envelope size. Ratios from 6:1 to 350:1 can be obtained, coupled with a higher power transmission capability than an equivalent size worm wheel.

designed and manufactured gears, gear assemblies and gearboxes for a variety of applications ranging from machine tools, textile machinery, lifts, hoists, cranes and conveyors to agricultural, mining, oil exploration equipment and main battle tanks. Defence Industry This is an area of the market in which we are called upon to use to the full our design and manufacturing expertise in order to meet the stringent technical, manufacturing and performance specifications laid down by our customers. The Company is registered to ISO 9001 and is an approved contractor and sub-contractor to the UK Ministry of Defence. Additionally, our Quality Control organisation is fully approved by the majority of the leading UK manufacturing companies.

Spiradrive gears are stronger and smoother running than any other gear type of equal size and ratio. They have high shock strength with near zero backlash and can be custom manufactured, or are available off-the-shelf. They are also less sensitive to mounting errors than worm or bevel hypoid gears.

Spiradrive gearing

Higher ratios and more power transmission capacity than other forms of gearing.
The unique design and performance advantages of Spiradrive are currently being exploited in a multitude of industrial, commercial and military application ranging from automobiles, power tools, airborne recorders, floor polishers, aerials, screw jacks, hoists, torpedos, machine tools, lawn mowers, robots, military turrets, coordinate drives, etc.

Reasons for using Spiradrive

Ratios from 6:1 to 360:1plus in a single pair of gears. High torque transmission capacity. Stronger and smoother running than other types of gear of equal size and ratio. Smaller packaging dimensions than equivalent worm gearset. High shock strength. Positive backlash control 3 mins of arc backlash capability. Greater efficiency at high ratios than wormgears. Less sensitive to mounting errors than worm, bevel or hypoid gears.

Spiradrive is a registered trademark.

Features

Poly Chain GT2

Tratrix Tooth Form

The belts teeth and body are made of a lightweight polyurethane compound, specially blended for adhesion to the cords and fabric. This uniquely formulated polyurethane makes the belt tough and virtually immune to abrasion and chemicals. The aramid tensile cords provide extraordinary power carrying capacity. Flex fatigue life of aramid is exceptional, and its high impact strength withstands shocks and surge loading. The fabric covering the teeth is highly resistant to oil, chemicals, pollutants, corrosion and abrasion. It is exceptionally durable and remains fully operational under extreme temperatures from -54C up to +85C. The fabric facing reduces friction with the pulley, thereby minimising temperature build-up.

Benefits
Substantially increased power rating. Highly efficient positive drive. Maintenance-free: no lubrication or re-tensioning needed. Savings in space, weight and money.

Belt drive selection procedure

Poly Chain GT2

Features and Benefits
Before designing a Poly Chain GT2 synchronous belt drive, you need to determine following drive requirements: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. power requirement and type of driveN machine the rpm of the driveR machine the rpm of the driveN machine the approximate centre distance for the drive hours per day operation

To select a Gates Poly Chain GT2 belt drive, you need to complete the following steps:

STEP 1
CALCULATE THE DESIGN POWER
Design power = service factor x power requirement

A. To calculate the design power it is necessary to determine the service factor for the drive. Determine the type of the driveR machine using the service factor chart.

B. Using the service factor chart, determine the service factor for the driveN machine and the type of operational service.

C. Multiply the power requirement of the drive by the service factor you have selected. This gives you the design power for use in designing the drive.

Poly Chain GT2 Belt Dimensions

The three principal dimensions of a Poly Chain GT2 belt are pitch; pitch length; width. Belt pitch is the distance in millimetres between two adjacent tooth centres as measured on the pitch line of the belt. Belt pitch length is the total length (circumference) in millimetres as measured along the pitch line. The theoretical pitch line of a Poly Chain GT2 belt lies within the tensile member. Gates Poly Chain GT2 belts are made in 8 mm and 14 mm pitches.

Pitch mm 8MGT 8 14MGT 14

System Specification

The three principal dimensions of a pulley are pitch; number of grooves; belt width. On the pulley, pitch is the distance between groove centres and is measured on the pulleys pitch circle. The pitch circle of the pulley coincides with the pitch line of the belt engaging with it. The pulleys pitch diameter is always greater than its outside diameter. Any Poly Chain GT2 belt must be run with pulleys of the same pitch. Poly Chain GT2 belts can be used on existing Poly Chain GT drives. They operate on the same pulleys and do not require any adaptation of the system. Pulleys for Poly Chain GT2 belts are made in 8 mm and 14 mm pitches. Standard pulley sizes are listed on. For each Poly Chain GT2 belt width, there is a table listing the pulley codes, the applicable bushing style and pertinent dimensional information. Reference to the stock bushings for Poly Chain GT pulleys plus bore and keyway information is available to order the correct bushing. The pulley ordering code is composed as follows: Example: PCGT 8M 22S 12 8M Pitch 8 mm 22S 22 teeth (S stands for pulley) 12 Belt width (mm)

Universal Joints

Davall Hookes type universal an addition to the Davall ranges of power transmission equipment. They are available in single and double types and can be supplied with grease retaining covers for applications where they are to be used in dusty, grit-laden atmospheres or places inaccessible to normal maintenance routines. They provide a simple, economical method of connecting two shafts whose axes are inclined at an angle to each other or, are parallel but not in line. The design of the single joint is such that when operating at an angle the velocity of the driven end fluctuates harmonically twice every revolution. The extent of the acceleration and deceleration is a function of the angle at which the joint is operating - the greater the angle the greater the variation in output velocity. This fluctuation may be over come by using either a double joint or, two single joints connected by an intermediate shaft. Where one shaft has lateral movement about the other the intermediate shaft should be telescopic. Guidance on correct installation is given. Although both single and double joints will rotate at a working angle of 45 we recommend that where they are to be used on power transmission applications the working angle should not exceed 25.
