School holds annual Colors for Causes event

By L. HABER
The Sun
Moorestown High School students were seen hobbling across
the gymnasium floor as part of
potato sack races, and aiming
high and low at the dunk tank,
where staff members awaited to
be submerged into icy-cool water.
On April 17, the MHS gym was
not the only place where fun and
carnival-like festivities had appeared to take over.
The cafeteria blasted with upbeat music, as student DJs played
high-energy tunes throughout the
day.
Wearing shirts of all colors of
the rainbow, the whole school was
tie-dyed by the Colors for Causes
event, which took place for the
third year in a row.
Though the event appeared to
be all fun and games, there was a
serious message, and some serious money being raised for local
causes.
One of the senior officers for
Colors for Causes this year, Bavica Gummadi, described why
Moorestown as a whole became a
focus for the school event.
We went for Moorestown-related areas to give back to the
larger Moorestown community,
Gummadi said. This year, there
was a real push to donate to
Moorestown charities.
Colors for Causes highlighted
organizations such as the

and the Emergency Squad.
Colors for Causes became
more about lets raise money
outside of causes that are just for

us, Special Education and English teacher Michael Sullivan

said.
Since January, weekly meetings were held with members of

student government, teachers, administrators and class officers,

who acted as liaisons to homerooms throughout grade levels.
It has a different twist this

year, Barb Young, health and

physical education teacher, said.
While the end of the year peprally-sort-of event has been about
good deeds and togetherness in
the past, it had never focused on
helping local organizations.
Because its only three years
old, its definitely still a work in
progress, senior officer Nicole
Wilson said. Every year its been
a charity event, and we do different fundraisers this year is
supposed to be more unified. It really is Moorestown giving back to
the Moorestown community.
Tickets for games such as the
dunk tank and uniquely designed
event-themed t-shirts were sold in
preparation for Colors for Causes.
Families of students and anyone
interested also had the chance to
donate money to the charities involved. Numerous local businesses not only donated funds, but
also sponsored activities at the
event.
Still, Colors for Causes was not
just about learning, community
service and donating to good
causes. The event has a general
theme added to it each year. This
year, the theme was anti-bullying.
Instead of focusing on the negative meaning of bullying, Colors
for Causes showed students the
positives of treating each other
with respect.
Its a culture of kindness,
Sullivan said. We call it anti-bulplease see EVENT, page 10

Police hosting drop off

for medications
The Moorestown Police Department will be hosting a prescription and over the counter
medicine disposal site as part of
the 2014 DEA Operation Take
Back NJ initiative.
The medicine turn-in will take
place on Saturday, April 26 from

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will take place at the
front parking lot of the police department, at 1245 N. Church St.,

Take Back NJ is to provide a safe
and legal method for the citizens
of New Jersey to dispose of their
unwanted, unused, and expired

in our opinion

The best places to retire ... in NJ?

We didnt realize this was still an option
here seems to be a list for
everything nowadays. The best
of this, the top 10 of that, the
worst place to do such and such.
Last week, we came across a list that
took us by surprise. It is a list of the
top 10 places to retire ... in New Jersey.
Yup. New Jersey. We didnt even realize that staying in the Garden State
after working age was still an option
or, rather, something that people desired.
Anywho, Movoto Real Estate published the list, starting with places
that had at least 10,000 residents (110
places), then ranking them based on
four interesting criteria:
1.) Cost of living higher is better,
because when youve worked all your
life, what you really want to do is have
your money go toward taxes and not
that trip to Rome
2.) Crime rate lower is better, well,
obviously
3.) Amenities places such as li-

will you flock south, or to somewhere else
outside the Garden State? Share your
thoughts on this, and other topics, in a letter to the editor.

braries, physicians, arts and entertainment, and adult education

4.) Weather average summer temperature and air quality score, which
eliminates Newark
So, by these rankings, the top 10
places to retire in New Jersey, from
one to 10, are:
Ridgewood, Tenafly, Westwood, Glen
Rock, Haddonfield, Florham Park,
Madison, Hasbrouck Heights, Princeton and Ridgefield
To be sure, these are all wonderfully
beautifully places in New Jersey, well
worth celebrating and very attractive
for residents and visitors alike.
But retirement? Were not so sure
that many elderly residents would

Dan McDonough Jr.

agree with you.

Theres a reason why so many New
Jerseyans retire elsewhere its
cheaper. And, in contrast to Movotos
interpretation of the lists criteria,
cheaper is better, because most people
would rather see their hard-earned
money go toward vacations than taxes,
for example. Many retirees go to Florida not just for the weather but for the
absence of a state income tax.
Maybe if New Jersey was more affordable, more elderly residents would
stay at home, near their friends and
family. But since its not, many dont.
We are probably not the only ones
who laughed when we considered any
place in New Jersey other than, say, a
beach town such as Ocean City (which
ranked No. 26 on the list, behind
places such as Hoboken) a good
place to retire. And thats a shame, and
a problem all at the same time.
Our residents shouldnt have to prepare to leave when they retire.

Step by Step preschool to celebrate 50th birthday

By L. HABER
The Sun
Not yet hardened by the world and all
the noise that surrounds the traveling and
happenings of the everyday, children are
most susceptible to outside influences. As
more research is released regarding the
early years as being influential to whom a
child has the ability to become as an adult,
parents may become more and more concerned with their childrens early childhood education.
Since 1964, Step by Step preschool in
Moorestown has been educating children.
The facility will be celebrating its 50th

birthday, and the joy of teaching young

Moorestown residents, on Sunday, May 4.
Anyone is welcome to become part of
the celebration we are just hoping to get
in touch with some of the old families,
said Head Teacher Arlene Walker, who has
been with the preschool for more than 25
years. It would be awesome for the parents and old students to come out and see
each other.
The celebration Walker referred to is a
50th anniversary birthday bash at the First
Presbyterian Church where the preschool
is attached. Though the preschool is affiliated with the church, children of nonmembers are welcomed just the same as chil-

dren whose parents belong to the church.

With curriculum that includes language, social studies, math, science and
creative arts, among other topics, there is
no wonder as to why the preschool has
been shaping the minds of young people in
Moorestown for 50 years and counting.
This is school, we do not simply
babysit, Walker said.
Aside from the structured curriculum,
Walker mentioned a reason for the schools
popularity coming from the nurturing and
patient ways of instructors, giving the
school a general feeling of comfort and

Lisa Trapani, president of the
Moorestown Education Association and MHS teacher.
The piece with the anti-bullying is important. So is changing
the culture within a school building, then bringing that positive
change into the community, Sullivan emphasized.
Before the color clash tradition
began in 2012, the Colors for
Causes event was known as
Wellness Day, and students did
not have a say in the activities
presented. Teachers thought that
involving the students more
would increase participation and
boost morale.
One thing thats evolved over
time is that weve put more responsibility on the student advisors, Sullivan said.
Young and others seemed to

respectful, and positive behavior.
To help students grasp the concept of respecting each other,
guest speaker Eric Martinez presented his I Got Your Back
worldwide anti-bullying presentation before the games began in
the gym. Martinez has worked
with Quinton Aavon, the actor
who played Michael Oher in the
movie The Blind Side, and has
many other life-coaching experiences. Martinez spoke to students
about how giving back and appreciating each other goes hand in
hand, not just during the event,
but throughout life.
The concept was Moorestown

The students its really
their event, Trapani agreed.
The student advisors highlighted that the event brings together
students from different grade levels, unlike a lot of other MHS
events.
Theres a lot of cross-grade involvement now, Gummadi said.
Gummadi and Wilson mentioned that school unity is simply
amplified by the seniors getting
to remember Colors for Causes.
It was something new that
was started, and can now be carried on, Wilson said.
Students and staff look forward to Colors for Causes each
year, and know the challenge lies
within how to expand the event to
be even more influential each
time around.
Next year, well go bigger,
Young said.

I have become close with so

how they feel completely comfortable here, Walker said.
Living in Moorestown, Walker
has seen many former students,

not seen their peers or the school
for many years.
I see so many people through

We are actually having an
open house for prospective students before the event, Walker
said.
The 50th anniversary celebration will officially begin at 2:30
p.m. Scheduled events are a special preschooler performance, a
cake cutting ceremony and some
surprises.
Most of all, the event will commemorate the changes that have
occurred over the years. Walker

The preschool began in 1964

Walker recalled increases in

Coach profiled in Fortune

By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Scanning through emails one
day about six weeks back, George
Kennedy saw a message from Fortune Magazine. To his surprise, it
wasnt a solicitation for a subscription, it was to gather information about him as he was being
considered for a future story.
Kennedy initially didnt think
much of it, wondering if it was
part of a profile on college coaches as he has been at the helm of
the Johns Hopkins University
swim teams for 29 years.
I almost deleted it, Kennedy
said with a laugh.
Lucky
for
Kennedy,
a
Moorestown High School alum,
he did not move the message to
the trash bin. Turns out he was
being featured as one of the
worlds 50 greatest leaders.
I to this day dont know how
they got my name, Kennedy
said. To find out it was a list of

the 50 greatest
leaders in the
world was really humbling.
You see the obvious names,
the pope, Bill
Clinton.
Its
kind of cool to
share a list
with
names
KENNEDY
like that.
Kennedy was named the
worlds 36th greatest leader. The
list is made up of names recognizable across the globe, the leader of
the European Union Angela
Merkel, the CEO of Ford Alan
Mullaly, the Dalai Lama, Apples
CEO Tim Cook, Angelina Jolie
and many others. Duke University mens basketball coach Mike
Krzyzewski, San Antonio Spurs
head coach Gregg Popovich and
University of South Carolinas
womens basketball coach Dawn
Staley were the only other coaches that made the list.
To list all Kennedys accomplishments as a coach would require this paper to be about 40
pages longer. He is a seven-time
NCAA Division III national coach
of the year. Under Kennedy's leadership, Hopkins has maintained
its place as one of the most dominant programs in the nation. He
has guided the Blue Jays to a
number of impressive finishes at
the NCAA Championships, with
both the men and women's teams
consistently challenging for the

national championship.
In 29 years at Hopkins with the
men's program, Kennedy has
compiled a 187-107 dual meet
record, collected 15 conference titles and coached 15 NCAA champions. The Blue Jays have finished in the top 10 at the NCAA
Championships 26 times in
Kennedy's 29 seasons and have
finished in the top five 14 times.
Kennedy was also a part of the 28
consecutive conference titles won
by the men's team from 1971
through 1998. That streak is tied
for the third-longest streak in any
sport in Division III history.
As head coach of the women's
program, Kennedy has compiled
a dual meet record of 162-140-2
while collecting nine conference
titles, including three straight titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and
back-to-back titles in 2011 and
2012. The Blue Jay women have
finished in the top 10 at the NCAA
Championships 18 times during
his tenure, including four top-five
finishes. Prior to Kennedy's arrival, the Blue Jay women had
never finished in the top 10 and
had finished in the top 20 just
twice.
In all, Kennedy has coached 25
NCAA Champions, including
eight at the 2014 NCAA Championships. During his tenure, he
has coached more than 200 men
and women to nearly 1,400 AllAmerica honors.

Kennedy is quick to credit his

longevity as a coach to the university.
A lot of coaches have been
here a long time. Since Ive

been here Ive worked with two

athletic directors and they
make people want to stay,
Kennedy said. Over the years,
there have been other opportunities but its been a super place. Its
been great to raise kids here. Its
been a real good fit since the beginning.

said the feeling is mutual.

I met George at the University
of North Carolina in 1978. He was
the assistant swimming coach
and I knew he would make a great
head coach. Hes very knowledgeable, an excellent swimmer,
Calder said. When I came to
Johns Hopkins in 1988 as the associate director, he welcomed me
to the university.
Even as Kennedy approaches
three decades as a coach, Calder
said his spirit and his passion
have never waned.
I believe that swimming is the
toughest sport there is; its just
the swimmer against the water
and the clock. And at Hopkins,
which is academically challenging, George has always gotten creative to work with his student athletes. There are times when hell
be on the deck three times a day
so he can work around students
lab and class schedules, Calder
said.
Part of his approach as a coach
comes from something his
youngest daughter said years ago.
She was asked what her favorite sport is and her response
was whatever sport Im doing
right now, which I thought was
great, Kennedy said. That
keeps me coming back because
your new favorite team is next
years team. I think for any coach,
the really neat thing is that youre
not just helping them in the pool,
youre helping them as people. An
environment where they improve
every day, where they learn everyday.
Though Kennedy lives in
Maryland and raised his family
there, he still credits his roots for
leading him to his chosen path.
I cant think of a better place
to grow up than Moorestown, that
whole area. I can remember
watching Eagles games on Sunday afternoons Kennedy said.
Any time we visit Im reminded
its a great place.
