nominees.
We are fortunate to have
thousands of excellent health-
care professionals taking care
of us in the Coastal Bend. They
are our unsung heroes. Most
of them will tell you the care,
compassionate and expertise
they provide are just part of
the job. We know its more
than that.
Health Care Heroes have a
purpose: To help, heal, comfort
and save lives. They put others
before themselves; see prob-
lems and solve them. They are
individuals and organizations
who truly make a diference
in the health and well-being
of our community.
Health Care Heroes is a
program of the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times that recognizes
excellence in care and ser-
vice and educates the com-
munity about best practices to
enhance the value and quality
care in the Coastal Bend area.
This is our second annual
celebration for recognizing
their outstanding work and
contributions. We would like
to thank our sponsors for join-
ing us to recognize the great
work and service of our health
care industry.
Part of the proceeds from
the 2014 Caller-Times Health
Care Heroes luncheon will
go to the American Heart
Association.
There were more than
120 nominations for our rst
Health Care Heroes event. All
of these nominations were re-
viewed by a panel of commu-
nity judges, who selected 18
nalists (three in each of our
six categories). An overall win-
ner in each of the six catego-
ries will be announced at aan
wards ceremony luncheon on
Tuesday, April 22 at the Solo-
mon P. Ortiz Center.
Our overall winners will be
featured in a full page adver-
tisement in the Sunday, May

Please join us in thanking ALL
of our health care profession-

Dr. Thomas
Wilder
OBGYN, CORPUS CHRISTI
WOMENS CLINIC
Dr. Thomas Wilder has all
the credentials to be an OB-
GYN but what sets him apart
is much greater than the words
on his diploma. Dr. Wilder pos-
sesses the expert knowledge
without the attitude of superi-
ority. His genuine character-
istics are part of his DNA and
are transparent with the care
he provides his patients.
Yes, its his profession, but
hes not afraid to show the hu-
man factor when he celebrates
life or an unfortunate loss with
his patients.
When I had a miscarriage he
did not give a medical explana-
tion instead he hugged me and
said You will be okay, youre
not alone and on my follow up
visit handed me a little book
titled, Empty Arms.
At age 38, Dr. Wilder sent me
for a base-line mammogram.
I did not have a family histo-
ry so I knew it was a routine
request. Despite literature
endorsed by the government
which suggests women should
get mammograms at the age of
40, Dr. Wilder stayed true to
his medical experience and be-
gan a couple of years before 40.
I am blessed Dr. Wilder did
not succumb to all the govern-
ment bureaucracy about mam-
mograms at age 40; because at
age 39 I was diagnosed with
breast cancer and had both
breasts removed.
The ne-like-sand cancer
was detected by comparing
my exam at age 38 to 39. Dr.
Wilder is deserving of this
award because, in addition to
his credentials and accolades,
he is passionate about the
medical care women deserve.

Dr. Lorraine
Stehn
FAMILY PRACTITIONER,
ARANSAS PASS
Dr. Lorraine Stehn has been
a family practitioner in Aran-
sas Pass for more than 31 years.
When introducing myself as
her husband, I have received
a tremendous outpouring of
thanks from people whom she
has helped.
Dr. Stehn is extremely com-
passionate and excels with
helping entire families as well
as the individual patient. She is
an incredibly astute clinician,
often coming up with the cor-
rect diagnosis that a specialist
may have missed.
She is unappable and in-
credibly calm under pressure
and remains agreeable even
when disturbed throughout
the night with phone calls
from the hospital and nursing
homes. She never aims a bad
word at another health care
worker. Nurses and other hos-
pital staf love to work with her.
In her early years of practice
she delivered hundreds of ba-
bies but now specializes taking
care of older patients, includ-
ing some in four diferent nurs-
ing homes. She does hospital
rounds seven days a week and
has a full-time of ce practice.
Many winter Texans use her
as their doctor since they like
her so much.
Dr. Stehn is one of only two
family practice physicians in
Aransas Pass, an area with a
shortage of family doctors. She
has been a great mother for
our two boys, and a great role
model for what woman in the
Coastal Bend can accomplish.
I consider her a true hero of
the Coastal Bend.

Dr. Jason
Bradford
OBGYN, ALICE OBSTETRICS
AND GYNECOLOGY
The experience I had with
my rst obstetrician in 2007
wasnt the best. She was cold
and didnt seem interested in
me as patient. Every concern
was brushed of and labeled as
just a pregnancy symptom.
When I got pregnant in 2013
after a year of not being suc-
cessful, I was nervous, in de-
nial and excited but now I had
to nd a doctor. I was looking
for a local doctor. I had heard
good things about Dr. Jason
Bradford and he was located
in Alice.
I met Dr. Bradford and
was immediately welcomed
warmly and professionally. I
developed gestational diabetes
during my pregnancy and he
helped guide me in the direc-
tion I needed to ensure a safe
and healthy pregnancy.
Dr. Bradford was supportive
and very informative about a
disease that I wasnt familiar
with at all, despite the fact that
both my parents sufer from it.
Throughout the pregnancy
I was monitored and informed
about the progress. Instead of
scolding me and shaming me,
as my other obstetrician had
for being heavier than I should
be, Dr. Bradford helped guide
me to make healthier choices
for me and my unborn child.
We delivered a healthy baby
boy via cessarian section on
June 4, 2013. He was born two
weeks early because of compli-
cations from diabetes.
I always joke that Dr. Brad-
ford must work some kind of
magic because I was up and
walking with little pain shortly
after my surgery. My recovery
was a speedy one. I was able to
help my husband pack up our
house as we were in process of
buying a home during my preg-
nancy. I feel wonderful.
One especially touching
moment after one appoint-
ment, Dr. Bradford told me,
God Bless you as I was leav-
ing his of ce. Not many physi-
cians would do that. That truly
touched my heart. It reminded
me of what a down home type
of man Dr. Bradford is. He is
a product of Alice and a great
asset to the community.
I am truly thankful to Dr.
Bradford for helping make my
last pregnancy a special one,
even if it was a high risk one.

OFFICE MANAGER
TEXAS VEIN AND

Outstanding hero is even an
inadequate description to pro-
le Norma Reyes as an of ce
manager for Texas Vein and

the rock for success over and
over for us through so many
transitions and moves in the
last 12 years she has worked
with us.
I remember nding her at
a small-sized family practice
of ce and asking if she would
take a risk on a new doctor
who had just come to town and
come work for us. She decided
to jump in and she has been
the catalyst for dependability,
follow-through, support and
internal organization helping
us grow, from herself and the
doctors wife as the only em-
ployees, to a staf of 26 and four
locations later.
Her most outstanding qual-
ity by far is her compassion
and creativity for helping pa-
tients make their payments at
the of ce. I have seen her take
time, again and again, talk-
ing carefully and slowly with
the older patients, explaining
their benets, listening to their
questions, coming up with pay-

and giving them tremendous
respect and care. She gives

Dr. Charles
Clements
DENTIST, KINGSVILLE

I nominate Dr. Clements for
his excellence in dentistry and
his dedication to his patients.
Dr. Clements always puts him-
self in the patients shoes and
treats them the way he would
like to be treated.
Dr. Clements has been
practicing dentistry for more
than 35 years and loves what
he does. He spends countless
hours annually to better him-
self as a dentist to provide the
best dentistry for his patients.
He stays up to date with getting
trained in all areas of dentistry
in order to better serve his pa-
tients and provide all the den-
tal needs of the patient rather
than referring them to difer-
ent specialist.
Dr. Clements can do the
majority of all dentistry, from
a simple lling or extraction, to
a complete mouth reconstruc-
tion. His ultimate goal is for
the patient to be completely
happy with their dental work
and does everything in his will
to make sure that is end result.
As an employee of Dr. Cle-
ments I have seen Dr. Clements
change many lives by help-
ing people x all their dental
needs. It is a joy to work for
a dentist with a big heart for
his patients. I have seen many
patients walk out of the of ce
with tears of joy because of
his work and we have received
many hugs from very satised
patients. They are not just an-
other patient in his eyes, they
are family and friends that
have entered our dental home.
Dr. Clements is by far a hero
for the many lives he has bet-
tered for many people who
now smile.

ORTHODONTIST,

In the short time Ive worked

are true. She genuinely cares
about every single one of her
employees, patients and their
families. Even more, she really
cares about our community
and loves to give back.
Her success wasnt handed
to her; she worked extremely
hard and overcame many odds
to get to where she is, and has
remained humble in the pro-

are very successful because
Dr. Robertson believed in them
and gave them a chance.
Her patients love her be-

She wants to give everyone
the gift of a beautiful smile be-

The Velas have been a true

Dr. Benjamin Vela is my hero
because of his fearlessness and
ability to continue growing our

In 2011 an injury to his father
put great stresses on our com-

to push forward in the face of
adversity, myself and 25 other
local residents would not have
employment with a company
that is not only fun, but re-
warding to work for. He is a
hero to all of us.
Recently his two-year-old

Acute Lymphoblastic Leuke-

much time of to be with her
through her treatment he has
vowed to work as hard as nec-

He is an excellent advocate

Violet Russell Edwards, LVN
1986 at Del Mar College, gradu-
ating valedictorian in her class,
was certied in 1992-1994 as a
home health administrator by
the state of Texas.
Ms. Russell-Edwards is a
very staunch healthcare pro-
fessional, a strong, concerned
and charitable citizen, (she is)
concerned about training health
care professionals in and out of
school and provides indigent
care for (many).
She allowed several students
to shadow her in her home care
service. In 1998, the Texas gov-
ernment said (there were) too
many African-American and
biracial children in the system.
The removal rate from families
and homes was very high and
adoption rate was very low.
She was appointed by the
Corpus Christi Black Chamber
of Commerce to participate in a
seminar on Undoing Racism
offered by Child Protective
Services. She was heavily in-
uenced and took responsibility
to chair a committee on dispro-
portionality for the region that
has made her a really super hero
for the many homes receiving
home care, the families greatly
afected, and very importantly,
the lives of children well and ill
needing multiple attentions.
In 2010 there were 21 African-
American and biracial children
needing adoption. She created
the rst adoption gallery in this
region for African-American
and biracial client adoptions.
As of 2014. there are only four
African-American and biracial
children needing adoption in
our region because of her in-
tensive work in this area. Her
work has been spectacular. The
status of disproportionality has
been dramatically inuenced in
a positive way by her work. Her
work in disproportionality has
aided in bringing awareness to
the health issues for and to chil-
dren, youth and families.

John J.
Vicknair, Jr.
CORPUS CHRISTI
PROSTHETICS
John J. Vicknair Jr. is one of
the most caring and generous
people I have ever known. He
gives of himself and his pros-
thetics business tirelessly. On
a daily basis he gives hope and
light to people who are so very
deserving of both: amputees.
John is a deeply religious
man who will tell you, Its
Gods business, I just take care
of it for him. John donates
an exceptional amount of his
time, skill, labor and resources
to the community and to his
patients. He does everything
he can for them, no is not an
option.
John is a prime example
that hard work and dedication
pay of: he moved to Corpus
Christi from Louisiana nearly
50 years ago, with his wife and
small children in tow, to open
a brand new prosthetics shop.
He worked around the clock
to keep the business running,
and to make it the success that
it is today.
In an industry that is not al-
ways operated by people with
good and honest intentions,
John has the best of intentions
and is as honest as they come.
For being the amazing hus-
band, father, grandfather, and
now great-grandfather that he
is, and a health care profession-
al that the entire health care
industry can emulate, John J.
Vicknair Jr. is my health care
hero. He is his patients hero.
And he is his familys hero. We
are so very proud of him.

Nurses Excellence in
Health Care Award
Catherine
Grant
RN, CARDIAC CATH
LAB, CHRISTUS SPOHN
SHORELINE
She is commonly called
the hardest working nurse in
Corpus Christi, in part due to
her strong work ethic, early to
bed and early to rise attitude to
care for patients who have car-
diac cathertization procedures
in the Spohn Cardiac Cath Lab.
She is inherently focused
on providing the best medical
care while, at the same time,
going out of her way to put the
patient and family at ease and,
when appropriate, make it a
fun and enjoyable experience.
It is common for patients to
send her thank you cards and
gifts, as well as write letters to
Christus Spohn administrators
letting them know that Cath-
erine is a special, gifted and
talented registered nurse.
Catherine won a Daisy
Award from Christus Spohn,
which recognized her as one
of the top nurses at Christus
Spohn. Catherine is not the
type of person to draw atten-
tion to herself, hence the Daisy
Award was a complete surprise
to her.
She just loves being a nurse,
has a great rapport with pa-
tients, and is instinctively a
hard worker.
Nominated by Joe P. Fulton

assistance and extra-special care and whose
performance and leadership are considered

RN, CRITICAL CARE
UNIT, CHRISTUS SPOHN
MEMORIAL
The reason I am nominating
this person for a Health Care
Hero award is I have seen how
hard this woman has worked
to rst get her registered nurse
degree and license. I have seen
her graduate and continue to
work hard to advance in her
profession.
She has worked in the
Trauma ICU Unit at Memo-
rial hospital since she received
her license and degree, before
transferring to the critical care
unit in the hospital.
Diana is a very caring indi-
vidual who has demonstrated
her compassion for her fellow
man and patients when they
need her most when they are
extremely sick or hurt.
She practices and tries to
lead by example in the area of
patient advocacy. She has been
complimented by patients and
the patients family for her out-
standing healthcare, compas-
sion, heart-felt caring and her
support of a patients family in
a sad and critical time in their
lives.
I have also seen her cry
because of the medical efort
put forth by doctors and other
nurses failed, the patient died,
and the case hit close to her
heart. But she picked herself
and her resolve up and contin-
ued to care and save patients.
When in the position of charge
nurse she is respected by her
peers, her advice and decision-
making are often sought after
by her peers.
In a time when health care
in this country is at a pivotal
point for individuals and hos-
pitals alike, its good to know
you have individuals like Di-
ana Barrera.
She will care for you no mat-
ter what your life situations-
might be because you are sick
or hurt and you need top-rated
health care, compassion, car-
ing hands and spirit to help you
heal and become whole again.

Trevor
Bonser
RN, CHRISTUS SPOHN
SHORELINE
Recently I was admitted to
Spohn Shoreline, Three East.
Twelve days later I was re-
leased. During these 12 days
I had the opportunity to meet
Trevor Bonser in his new posi-
tion as nurse manager. My ex-
perience in those 12 days with
Trevor was very impressive.
Trevor took the time to stop
and visit with me. He answered
endless questions, provided
valuable advice and support.
Upon going home I felt as-
sured that in the event I ever
needed Trevor he would be
there for me. Well he is a man
of his word.
Having only been home ve
days, I developed a high fever
and my blood pressure was
dangerously low. Being as
how this had never happened
so soon after going home, my
wife sent Trevor a text . She re-
ally needed help. At 8:58 a.m.
she sent Trevor a simple text:
Trevor please help me. To
her surprise at 9:10 a.m. Trevor
called her, and on a Sunday no
less.
Trevor asked for my temper-
ature, blood pressure and my
pulse. Upon hearing this infor-
mation Trevor told her to bring
me to Shoreline right away. At
9:43 a.m. Trevor called again,
advising me he had called the
doctor and the doctor would be
waiting for me.
Well, you can well imagine
the state my wife was in by
this time. Trevor had to calm
her down. He told her to drive
carefully and he would check
on us shortly. Twenty minutes
later he called us again, this
time to tell me he made room
on Three East for me and the
charge nurse would be waiting
for me.
Finally just as we are get-
ting to the emergency room
entrance, Trevor called again.
He told me not worry, (the
charge nurse) was waiting for
me on Three East and (the doc-
tors) would be there as soon as
possible. What a day that was
for us.
I would say Trevor is an an-
gel, but that could not even be-
gin to describe what he did for
me on that Sunday morning. I
can honestly say without reser-
vation that Three East is man-
aged by a man with excellent
leadership, concern, dignity,
quick response and compas-
sion. Trevor, you are my Health
Care Hero.
We say prayers daily for
Trevor and for all the excellent
staf he guides.
It is my hope Trevor will be
selected as a Health Care Hero
by the Caller-Times.

Special to the Caller-Times
Going with their heart was
ultimately the nal approach
in selecting one winner in this
years Corpus Christi Caller-
Times Health Care Heroes
program, judges said.
The nal decisions were
the most challenging, said
Catrina Wilson, president
and CEO of United Way of
the Coastal Bend. I nally
stopped trying to arbitrarily
assign scores and went with
my heart.
Wilson was one of the six
judges selected to read the 30
nominations in 10 categories
in this years program, which
recognizes healthcare profes-
sionals who have made a difer-
ence in the lives of the people
they serve.
Judging our health care
heroes is a very difcult but
rewarding task, said Steve
Arnold, vice president of mar-
keting for the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times. All of our nomi-
nees are great and they are all
very important to us. We are
not judging the credentials of
these professionals. We are
judging essays written by peo-
ple whose lives were afected
in some way by our heroes.
It is hard trying to judge
one better than the other, so
the process is thoughtful and
at times difcult choosing one
over another, Arnold said.
In January the Caller-Times
asked the community to nomi-
nate their health care hero and
explain why. Each judge read
the nominees resume, includ-
ing their nomination letters
and other supporting material.
Including Wilson, the oth-
er judges were Anna Flores,
owner/CFO of International
Meeting Planners Inc.; Amy
Granberry, executive direc-
tor of Charlies Place Recov-
ery Center; Richard Longo-
ria, news director at KIII-TV;
Omar Lopez, senior corporate
communications consultant at
AEP Texas; and Matt Stevens,
owner/president of Matt Ste-
vens Entertainment.
All of the judges recognize
the challenges in the health
care field. Lopez said he
couldnt do what they do each
day.
I am relieved that these
very competent individuals
are in the medical profession
because I could not be, Lo-
pez said. Seriously, I am im-
pressed that so many of the
nominees had endured life-
long careers in the medical
profession.
Wilson agrees.
Its very clear that it is
not simply an occupation for
those working in the medical
eld but rather a mission, she
said. Obviously knowledge is
required but the compassion
and empathy demonstrated
by the nominees is not learned
through books.
The nominees were nar-
rowed down to the top three
in each category, and then
each judge chose a top candi-
date from the top three.Stevens
said picking one winner in each
category was the hardest part.
The thing I looked for was
dedication, he said. Giving
out personal cell phone num-
bers was going beyond their
duty. Some letters stated how
the nominee said, Call me in
the middle of night. I think that
is incredible.
The community needs to rec-
ognize healthcare professionals
more often for the numerous
qualities they possess daily
while helping to heal, comfort
and save lives, judges said.
These individuals are our
unsung heroes, Flores said.
The community selected
the best, dedicated and well-
rounded individuals in their
respective eld. These indi-
viduals continue to change and
improve lives, take care of em-
ployees, put people rst, take
those extra steps to make a big
impact and, most importantly,
bring happiness into the lives
of others.
Granberry said healthcare
professionals have a greater job.
Many of us have difcult or
challenging jobs but healthcare
workers serve the community
at large, Granberry said. For
the most part, they are serving
people who are not feeling well
and certainly are not at their
best. This makes the job even
more challenging. As a com-
munity, we need to appreciate
and value the people who care
for us.
Stevens said its a love of their
hearts who won him over.
Anyone who is in this pro-
fession has to have heart, Ste-
vens said. On top of that, they
have to be extremely intelligent
and have an unbelievable love
for mankind. We are all equal
but somebody who works so
hard and who is so concerned
about others, its a beautiful
thing.
Nominees put heart into their profession
It is not simply an
occupation for those
working in the medical
eld but rather a mission.

Chews
Wisely
I am nominating iConquer,
a group of six students from
Carroll High School and Bak-
er Middle School because they
are making a big diference in
their community and bring-
ing a positive change. Corpus
Christi is known as Ground
Zero for diabetes.
At the beginning of the year
2013, the Caller-Times started
the series The Cost of Diabetes
to raise awareness regarding
diabetes. This caught the atten-
tion of a group of young middle
and high school students and
they took upon themselves a
mission to conquer diabetes
and put together a project
iConquer: Chews Wisely!
Obesity is one of the con-
tributing factor of diabetes.
Research has demonstrated
that age three to ve is a piv-
otal age, and if a child is obese
between the ages of three to
ve, then they are eight times
more likely to be obese in their
adulthood. In addition, after
ve years of age, a habit is al-
ready developed.
The mission of iConquer
is not to change habits, but to
create habits. With the help of
middle and high school stu-
dents, iConquer is efectively
capturing the attention of
young children through the
use of a unique self-created
music video Conquered,
an animated movie with fun
characters, an educational
puppet show, dance/exercise
routines, iClicker technology,
and kid-friendly portion plates
that ease the understanding of
maintaining a balanced diet.
It is amazing to see these
bright minds of Corpus Christi
creating healthy habits in our
community, one child at a time.
Their passion and dedication is
outstanding. Looking at these
students I can sure say the fu-
ture of Corpus Christi is going
to be brighter than ever before.

tas, Zoya Surani and Leslie Rae Salomon.

CO-FOUNDER TRIUMPH
OVER KID CANCER
Please accept this nomina-
tion. Words do not adequately
express my admiration for
Mecklin Ragan. Over the past
seven years, this amazing
young lady and her amazing
brother, James, have inspired
thousands to promote research
to cure pediatric cancers.
I am awed and inspired by
the work Mecklin and James
have done in our community
and across the United States.
As founders and ambassadors
for Triumph Over Kid Cancer,
their eforts have raised more
than $1.5 million dollars. A
valedictorian at Carroll High
School, and an honor gradu-
ate of Rice University, Meck-
lin postponed medical school
and worked tirelessly by her
brothers side to combat osteo-
sarcoma, the cancer that took
James far too soon.
As a spokesperson for the
group, I have seen the impact
of Mecklins messages of hope
for a cure when she addresses
groups from Cattle Barons to
the Corpus Christi Country
Club.
Whether visiting children
at Driscoll Childrens Hospi-
tal or MD Anderson, Mecklins
warm smile and understand-
ing and compassionate heart
brings a smile to children ght-
ing cancer.
In terms of community out-
reach, I know that her work
and many talents will undoubt-
edly continue to make a difer-
ence.
Please accept this nomina-
tion for Mecklin Ragan, a true
