Section

STANDARD: 3.2.3.A3 Demonstrate how heating and cooling may cause changes in the properties of materials including phase changes I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): The 3rd grade students will be able to show knowledge of solids, liquids, and gases, and the way they change between states, based on a fill in diagram. II. Instructional Materials Tray 4 liters of Root beer 2 Gallons of Vanilla Ice Cream 30 Cups 30 straws 4 large spoons or ice cream scoops Power Point 30 Power Point Notes 30 Diagrams 30 Inquiry Sheets Video III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite Skills 1. Understanding of Matter 2. Understanding of States of Matter B. Key Vocabulary 1. Condensation the change of gas to liquid 2. Evaporation the change of liquid to gas 3. Freezing the change of liquid to solid

4. Melting the change from solid to liquid C. Big Idea : Changing States of Matter D. Content IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. Show students a video based on the 3 states of matter that explains how the states of matter can change in water form. 2. Ask the students if they remember how the states of matter changed in the video. 3. Tell the students we are going to do an inquiry about the 3 states of matter and how they change. B. Development

1. Present students with a tray in the center of their table. On the tray will be a liter of unlabeled root beer, a pint of ice cream, a spoon and cups ( 1 per student at table) 2. Essential Questions: How do these items relate to the three states of matter and their changes? 3. Have the students fill out the first part of the inquiry sheet about their predictions? 4. Have the students work with the items on the tray to discover and inquire about the states of matter. 5. Once all groups have worked, have them write down their observations on their inquiry sheet. 6. Go around the room discussing what happened at each table and how the students used their items. 7. Lead their discussion into a discussion about how mixing the states of matter can cause a change. 8. Prompt the students by asking, How did the ice cream change since you put it in the root beer? 9. Discuss how the ice cream started to melt and why they think the ice cream was melting, 10. Have you ever seen anything else melt like the ice cream? 11. Have the students volunteer answers about substance melting. 12. The teacher will then have the students take the trays of materials to the side of the classroom and place them on the counter, 13. The teacher will then pass out the guided notes for the Power point Presentation 14. The teacher will present the power point about how states of matter change. 15. The teach will then pass out a diagram for the students to fill in about the 3 states of matter.

C. Closure 1. Have the students work in pairs to fill in a diagram that is attached. 2. The answer key is also attached 3. While the students are working walk around taking notes making sure that they students are working together to finish the diagram. 4. Collect the diagram at the end of the class to be graded.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation 1) For students with disabilities there would be guided notes printed as well as a partner assigned to them to help with their inquiry. The inquiry sheet may also have guide words to help them with predictions and steps.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan Formative The students charts will be collected at the end of the lesson and will be graded for correctness as well as a checklist will be used during partner time to monitor who is participating. Summative V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught) Remediation Plan B. Personal Reflection VI.
