INTRODUCTION Economic of Agroforestry in Punjab Agroforestry is not a new system or concept.

The practice is very old, but the term is definitely new. Agroforestry means practice of agriculture ad forestry on the same piece of land. Bene et.al. (1977) defined agroforestry as a sustainable management system for land that processes overall production combine agriculture crops and animals simultaneously Nair (1979) defines agro forestry as a land use system that integrate trees, crops and animals in a way that is scientifically sound, ecologically desirable, practically possible and socially

acceptable to the farmers. Agro-forestry as a science may be new but its practice is age old and agroforesting in some form or other was practiced by our ancient farmers. Agroforestry system in media may be classified as agri horticulture (crops + fruit trees), other common agroforestry systems could be Agri-pisci-silvi culture (crop + fish + trees) silvi opi culture (trees _ crops. Like similar process of combining di fferent component these could be many more agroforestry systems.

Gradually during recent periods because of increasing population and huge gap b/w to meet the increasing demand of fuel, holder and timber, To overcome this huge burden upon our existing fo rests, some alternative steps have to be taken to meet the increasing demand of forest produce i.e., production of such items have to be carried outside the forest area as well. Hence, in the light of ever increasing demand, concept of multiple use of land with multiple tree species has become immensely important. In this context, agro -forestry which is a form of multiple land use system should be adopted and encouraged

(K.Prasad). Agroforestry is one of the lend husbandry agriculture.

Progressive farmers of Punjab and adjoining states have adopt agroforestry but in spite of ecological and economic viability of the system not even or per cent area of Punjab is under agroforestry system. Jain and Singh (2000) found popular based agroforestry

economically viable and more profitable then many other crop rotations.

In India, during 1980-2000 fast growing expetic trees have been introduced in order to obtain maximum monestry gains from a given land unit in a short term of time. Popular (popular deltoids), a winter deciduous tree is one such tree that is being planted either in saws in crop fields or along field border or boundary market or shelterbelts. (H.P. Singh, R.K. Kohli * as D.R. Batish). The national forest policy an associated that one third of the total land area of the country mountainous terrain the aim should be to maintain two-third of area under vegetative cover with a view to prevent soil erosion, land degradation and simultaneous ensuring the stability of the profile ecosystem. The total geographical over of India is 3287240 sq. km. and is the 7 t h largest country in the world and cover 2.4% of the total surface area of the world. From the total area of the India agriculture land cover 17970.00 sq km of i.e., 60.4% on the forest covers 6775 9.0 sq.km and i.e., 238% of the total geographical area of the India. (INDIA state of Journal report 2011). Punjab is predominantly on agriculture state with about 82.83% of the total area state is 295 ha which is 5.86% of the geographical

area as against the requirement of 25% recommended by National Forces policy for the plains (Economic Advisor to Government Punjab) 2011 Area under forest in Punjab Statistical Abstract of Punjab PPL96. There are different types of planting schemes in Agroforestry . The plantation on be done along the fields boundaries, on water channels, on paths or as wind breaker around the orchords. Therefore, relative profitability of different agroforestry system need to be studied so as to form the firm present study was cond ucted farmer. Thus the present study was conducted keeping in view the following objectives. 1. To determine the relative share and scope of agroforestry population in Punjab. 2. To analyze the cost and returns of different type of agroforestry system. 3. To study the comparative economics of different agro -forestry system. 4. To locate the weakness of the present plans and suggest and alternative.

In Punjab people have already taken up Ecliptic and popular growing on their form and find it quite useful, because of least interference with agriculture crops, high rate of growth and short direction without hidering crop production with trees being on the boundary. Growing of intercrops under popular are ecolyptics

encourage multiple land uses such is holder from fi dder trees, as wind break assured suchwords, as revenue on form approach roads, beside providing the former with extra in income from the sale of wood production (Singh, Karam, R.S. Dhanda and Balbir Kumar, (1993). Limitations Most of the farmers of Punjab are illetrate in nature and they and returns from trees and crops which was a serious difficulty in collecting the accurate as required data and the information collected was based on the short members of the farmer. Though ev ery efforts was made to obtain correct information from the selected farmers, even then the possibility of biases information could not be ruled out completely.
