Study the passage below and answer the question entail with it.

Sultan Sharif Ali

The third Sultan of Brunei was Sultan Sharif Ali. He ruled from 1452 to 1455 and
married a daughter of Sultan Ahmad, the first Sultan of Brunei. Sultan Sharif Ali
came from London in Arabia. He was descended from Prophet Muhammad
(Peace be upon him). Sultan Sharif Ali was also known as Sultan Berkat, the
Revered One, because he did so much to spread Islam.

The first thing that Sultan Sharif Ali did regarding Islam, was to build a palace.
As a sign that Brunei was an Islamic country, Sultan Sharif Ali added the name
‘Brunei’ to Brunei.

He also created a Royal Emblem or Janji-Janji, a symbol of the Islamic power


which he had spread in Brunei. We can see this Royal Emblem on the Brunei flag
today.

Three years after the 1842 treaty, Pengiran Muda Hashim and his followers returned to

During this period, Brunei faced external threats from two sides. One came from Brooke
regime as they expanded Sarawak further east towards Brunei. The other threat came
from the British North Borneo Company, which gained concessions of land and pushed
west towards Brunei. As a result of these two external pressures, Brunei became smaller
and smaller.

Sultan Abdul Momin realized the dangerous position of Brunei at this time. As a result
