CBT Support
Selkirk College has received a $50,000 development
grant from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) to support the
implementation of its new Rural Pre-Medicine Program.
Tis comprehensive three-year program will provide
students with everything they need to apply medical
school. It was created as one piece of a long-term solution
to the shortage of rural doctors in BC by providing rural
and aboriginal students with access to a pathway into
medical school.

On April 11, 2014, the Trail Regional BCSPCA received 8 rats,
4 males and 4 females!
The focus today is on Bubba. He is approximately 8 months old
and is a male with brown and white fur.
Rats in general have a pretty bad reputation. People hear rat and
they see dirty, gross and mean vermin. Fortunately that is farthest
from the true case. Rats are curious, intelligent and resourceful
creatures. They are smart and afectionate, not to mention fun
to watch. They have their own unique personalities and can be
trained to use a litter box and perform tricks.
They are active animals who require a large habitat to thrive. A
tall cage with multiple levels for climbing is best. Habitat bottoms
and shelves should be solid, not mesh or wire, as it can cause
injury. Bedding should be wood shavings or a thick clean blanket
as cedar or pine shavings can cause health problems. Keep the
cage in an area protected from cold drafts and direct sunlight or
bright lights. Rats like darkness!
Rats should also live with another rat to be happy. Two or more
can live together as long as they are the same sex and have a large
enough living space. They will eat, play and sleep together, and
groom each other.
The usual lifespan of a rat is 2-3 years, so if you have room in your
home for a neat little creature, come to the Trail Regional BCSPCA

Scouts Canada is the countrys
leading youth organization. For
more than 100 years, 17 million
Canadian youth experience the out-
doors, adventure and friendships.
Te Scouts motto is Be Prepared
and the 2nd Rossland Scouts is true
to that word as they have been in-
volved with many activities in the
community, projects and getting
prepared for their biggest adventure
this summer. Te Scouts group in
Rossland is split up into 3 main age
groups. Te youngest is the Beavers
ages 5-7, Cubs ages 8-10 and
Scouts 11-14.
A very important part of being
such an active group is fundraising;
some of the largest fundraisers are
the selling of the traditional Scout
popcorn in the fall, bottle drives and
sorting throughout the year, and
help with United Way Dinner for
Caring.
Tis spring the frst annual garage
sale is the big event. Mark your cal-
endar and bring your goods to do-
nate to the Scout Hall, located at the
end of the road beside Jubilee Field
and Rossland Summit School. Drop

Den, where qualifying entrepreneurs
pitch their business idea to a group
of potential investors, Junior Drag-
ons Den, the West Kootenay-wide
business contest for youth entrepre-
neurs, is taking fight!
Spearheaded by Community
Futures, students in Grades 8-12
from throughout the West Koote-
nay-Boundary region were invited
to submit a business concept paper
and a brief 1.5 to 2 minute video ele-
vator pitch, explaining their business
idea. Submissions were then evaluat-
ed based upon fnances, marketabil-
ity, the product or service and the
overall plan presented.
Were excited and inspired by the
level of detail and sophistication pre-
sented by all applicants and would
like to congratulate everyone on a
job well done, stated Don Freschi,
GM, CFDC Greater Trail. Business
concepts ranged from eco exhaust
flters to outft matching apps, and
we cant wait to see these concepts
evolve through a focused business
planning process, with contestants
presenting to a panel of judges and
a live studio audience June 6 at the
Charles Bailey theatre in Trail, con-
tinued Freschi.
Te top eight Junior Dragons will
now work with a mentor from the
local business community on every-
thing from start-up considerations
and marketing, to coaching, leader-
ship and presentation skills, as they
refne their business concept into a
working business plan, and produce
a new video for their business as part
of their pitch.

Urban Fare and London Drugs.

Day BBQ at the Vancouver Art Gal-
lery on Georgia Street, April 24 from

sampling an exciting new Jeans Day

vided by Te Glowbal Collection
Group of restaurants. Entertainment
at the barbecue will be provided
by the Beat Street Squad and other
