Mr. Joshua Call Chris Lazration Cover Letters and Resumes 27 February 2014

1. McLaren Engineering Group Entry Level Structural Engineer McLaren Engineering Group, founded in 1977 by Malcom G. McLaren, is an engineering company that is devoted to its technical excellence, as well as priding themselves on serving their clients to the best of their abilities. When I came across McLarens job posting while I was searching for structural jobs I was instantly interested. The types of structural jobs that McLaren performs ties directly into the fact that I do not just want to be working on mainstream type structural projects. McLaren strives to make their employees think outside of the box, and I am the type of person that likes to think about projects from non-conventional angles. The job description for the Entry Level Structural Engineer emphasizes the fact that McLaren is seeking motivated applicants to work on some of the industrys most challenging projects. To emphasize t his, I placed the paragraph covering education before the paragraph covering my past work experience because unlike the second job application package my educational experience is more relevant than my past work experience. I explained how my senior capstone design course on structural engineering was the most challenging project that I had been a part of at Penn State. I also emphasized and explained how my group and I designed a multi-use manufacturing and shipping warehouse, and a two story steel framed office building for a Nissan manufacture from the ground up. Along with this project, I also explained how my group and I designed an adjacent concrete parking structure across the street from the Nissan facilities. My reasoning for spending the majority of the cover letter explaining these structural projects was to show McLaren that I am qualified to work on challenging structural projects. By describing the projects that I was involved in, it also shows that I have a strong work ethic and that I work well in teams; two qualities that McLaren find essential in their employees. The resume format that I went with for this job posting is much cleaner and simpler than most other formats out there. Also, because this job posting is so specific on what they are looking for, I added an objective statement to my resume explaining that I am looking for that type of job. Following the objective, I included an education section that explains my degree, schooling, GPA, and courses that are relevant to structural engineering. Next, I chose to include my previous work experience in chronological order even though it does not pertain directly to the type of work that McLaren does. I did this because in the civil engineering profession employers still want to see what previous experience the applicants have. After the work experience, I include a section on my technical skills and a section containing my honors/activities that pertain to civil (structural) engineering. Since McLaren Engineering group is a particularly large engineering firm, the main audience for the cover letter and resume would be the director of human resources. If they would find the documents to be interesting and promising, they then would be passed along to a division manager; and in this case it would go to the structural division manager for whichever location is in need of the new hire. I wrote my cover letter in such a way that would not become overwhelming to someone that does not entirely

understand the technical aspects of being a structural engineer. I included items that the HR person would specifically be looking for, and also technical items that the division manager would be looking for. By designing my cover letter to encompass both potential audiences, I portrayed myself as someone who has the educational experience to justify my application, and someone who has the skills and traits that McLaren is looking for in a new hire. 2. Bohler Engineering Entry Level Design Engineer Bohler Engineering has a unique culture compared to other engineering firms; work hard, play harder. They take pride in assembling their project teams around that culture, and it has been benefiting them for many years now. After talking with Bohler at the Penn State ASCE Career Fair about the type of company that they are and they type of projects that they work on, I became quite intrigued. The type of work that Bohler performs is directly related to the past civil engineering internships that I have already had, and is identical to the type of work that I have done in a capstone design course here at Penn State. The job description for the Entry Level Design Engineer spends more time emphasizing technical skills and qualifications than it does on what personal skills they are looking for. To show this in my cover letter, I organized it in such a way that my previous work experience comes before my education. I went into great detail explaining my past internships without repeating my entire resume. In this explanation, I mentioned some of the exact skills and qualifications that I have that matched what they are looking for in the job description. Along with that, I mentioned certain duties that I have performed while working that are also duties that they are expecting the new hire to know how to do. In my education section, I described and explained a senior capstone design course that I took that corresponded to the same type of work that they do. I explained how my group and I responsible for the design of a 75+ home sustainable subdivision; where we performed duties that correlate to about 75% of the duties listed in the job description. By explaining my past work experiences, and by listing my past educational projects that I was involved in, it shows Bohler that I am qualified to be applying for their job opening. The resume format that I used for Bohler was quite different than the format that I used for McLaren. This job posting is for a much broader category of engineer that they are looking for and my resume reflects that. I disregarded the objective statement because they objectives are too broad for this job posting. The first section indicates my education, my technical skills, and the relevant courses to this job posting. Like stated before, civil engineering profession employers want to see what previous experience a candidate has, therefore my next section of the resume was a chronological list my work experience. The final aspect to my resume was a section for honors/activities; where I listed my scholarships and other details that may be pertinent to Bohler Engineering. Like McLaren, Bohler is a fairly large engineering firm, but this job posting is for a particular office; therefore the main audience of this application package would be the particular division manager. For this reason, I made the cover letter more technical because they main person to be reviewing the document will understand the technical information. By focusing my cover letter for the division manager, I was able to portray myself as someone who has the real world experience in that line of work, and as someone who has the educational background to back it up. By doing so, I am more likely to connect on a technical level with the hiring manager, and show them that I am more than qualified for the job.

February 27, 2014 Director of Human Resources McLaren Engineering Group 100 Snake Hill Road PO Box 600 West Nyack, NY 10994 To whom it may concern; After searching Penn States eCareer services for entry level positions, and after coming across the McLaren position opening, I believe that I would perfect fit for the open Entry Level Structural Engineer position. I will be graduating in May of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Civil and Engineering (structures) from The Pennsylvania State University with a major GPA of 3.86/4.00. Also, in the spring of 2013 I successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, and will be receiving my EIT certificate upon graduation. In my senior capstone design capstone course, Advanced Structural Design, my project team and I designed a multi-use manufacturing and shipping warehouse and a two story steel framed office building for a Nissan manufacture in Detroit, Michigan. For this design, we calculated and determined wind and snow loadings for every section of the facility. With these loadings, we designed the main wind force resisting system (MWFRS) and all of the buildings beams and columns. Once we had the columns designed, we were able to finish the building by completing a comprehensive pile cap foundation design. The second part of the capstone course was devoted to the design of an adjacent concrete parking structure across the street from the Nissan facilities. For this, we calculated the particular loadings and designed all of the beams and columns. For each beam and column, we had to analyze and determine the size and placement of the reinforcing bars throughout the structure. I have had three civil engineering internships; the most recent at The EADS Group, where I worked on a city wide sanitary/storm water separation project. I spent my time utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D to design these new sanitary collector systems and developing the systems final AS-BUILT drawings. My second internship I was a Land Development Intern with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); where I worked in the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (BAMR). During my time there, I developed grading plans and erosion and sedimentation control plans for abandoned mining sites. My first internship was with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT.) I spent time working on a bridge reconstruction project where I oversaw the construction inspection duties. The types of projects that McLaren prides themselves in is the type of work that I love to do, and I believe my advanced structural design experience, as well as my understanding of the civil engineering profession will help me stand out from the rest. I appreciate your time and thank you for reviewing my qualifications and for taking time out of your busy day to look over them. Sincerely,
