PPSWO 2014 Needs Assessment Focus Group Process Guide 1. Introduction a.

Explanation of Process-talk, be friendly, open, honest, and excited i. Purposes of the focus group: 1. Help the education department better meet the needs of the community. 2. Determine what the community needs are in regards to sexuality education 3. To help PPSWO develop new ways for future educational programs of concurrent programs or improve current programs to address the needs of the Greater Cincinnati community. ii. Key points to mention: 1. Encourage everyone to talk and participate 2. Encourage participants to speak honestly about their views, perception, opinions, and experience 3. Confidentiality is a must! What is said in the room stays in the room. 4. If you dont feel comfortable answering a question, you dont have to. 5. Be respectful. Respect everyones opinions and thoughts. 6. Wait your turn to speak. Dont interrupt others. b. Explanation of taping and consent form-gain permission to interview i. Read consent form aloud ii. Explain that they will be recorded and we will be using answers solely for the needs assessment research iii. Have participants fill out demographic survey and consent form now iv. Collect forms before we begin c. Self-Introduction (Can use real name or fake name.) i. Ask participants to tell us where they are from? ii. What they like to do in their spare time?

2. Questions a. Sexuality is a very broad term used in many different ways, what does sexuality mean to you? (ex. Gender, sex, orientation, LGBTQ, masculinity/femininity, etc.) i. What do you think sexuality is? ii. How is sexuality a part of your life? (ex. TV, social media, relationships, music, etc.) iii. Do you think it is important to talk about sexuality, why or why not? 1. Do you feel comfortable talking about sexuality? 2. Who do you generally talk to about sexuality or feel most comfortable talking with? Why? 3. Who do you feel most uncomfortable talking to? Why? b. Thinking about sexuality, what do you think is the biggest issue in our community, if any? i. Why do you think these issues are prevalent? ii. Do you have ideas or suggestions on how to solve these issues? c. Where do you usually get your sexuality information form? i. Have you heard of PPSWOs education department? 1. For those of you that didnt know PPSWO had an education department, what do you think our education department does? 2. If you have, how did you hear about it? 3. If you have, what do you know about the education department? What do you believe we do? d. Have you ever had any type of sexuality education? i. If you have tell us about it. 1. When and where did this take place? 2. Who taught you about sexuality? (ex. Parents, schools, PPSWO, church, etc.) 3. What was your class like? (Comprehensive, abstinence only, boys & girls, separated, gender inclusive, scare tactics, etc.) 4. What topics did you learn about? 5. Did you think it was beneficial? Why or why not? 6. If you have never had sexuality education, do you wish you would have? 7. Why didnt you have any type of sexuality education? e. When you hear the term contraceptive what do you think of? i. Do you think most people your age use contraceptives? ii. Why or why not?

iii. What type or contraceptive methods do you think most people your age use, if any? (ex. condoms, the pill, IUD, the shot, EC, etc.) f. Do you know what an STI/STD is? i. Which STIs do you know about? ii. Do you believe that there are always physical or visible symptoms if a person has an STI? iii. Do you think STIs are curable or treatable? (Curable=can go away with antibiotics, Treatable=never goes away but life can be prolonged and symptoms kept to a minimum with medication) 1. List off the different STIs (curable vs. treatable) a. Curable: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Trichomoniasis, b. Treatable: HIV, Herpes, and HPV iv. Do you know how to prevent STIs? Do you think most people your age know how to prevent STIs? g. There are 19 million new STI cases of each year and by the age of 25 approximately 1 in 2 sexually active people will get an STI, and most wont know it. This is why it is so important for sexually active people to get tested for STIs regularly and use latex or polyurethane condoms every time you have oral, vaginal, or anal sex. i. Do you think most people you age are using condoms? ii. Why or why not? iii. Are there certain situations you someone is less likely to use protection? What are these situations? iv. Why do you feel like these situations occur? v. What do you feel are the main reasons people do not use protection? vi. How did you learn to use a condom? Do you wish you would have learned in a better way? vii. Do you believe there is anything we as health educators should be doing to prevent people from having unprotected sex? h. If there is one thing you could change about sexuality what would it be? (ex. education, equal rights, less stigma, etc.) i. What would need to happen for this change to occur?

3. Evaluation and Thank Yous a. Ask if there are any final questions, comments, or suggestions? b. Have participants complete evaluation survey. c. Thank everyone for attending.
