What is Astrology? Astrology is the science of finding connection between those of us on the Earth and the Cosmos. It follows the patterns of movement by the planets and stars and assigns meanings to them that relate to human motivation and consciousness. Astrology is not a simple meaning like what you read in the horoscope section of the newspaper. A true astrological report takes into account not only the Sun sign (what you get in the paper), but the placements of all the planets of our solar system and sometimes other celestial bodies as well in relation to your birth time. When all these meanings are compiled, it becomes a very complex and detailed description of a person s profile. History of Astrology...Ancient Babylon Astrology has been around for thousands of years. Tracing its roots back to ancient Babylonia, it was practiced by the priests to decipher the will of the gods. From Babylonia, astrology was adopted by the Greeks. They trusted the stars and the oracles to forecast the future. The Hindus of India were also exploring astrology at this time between 5000 and 3000 BC, developing some of the same signs we use today History of Astrology...Egypt It was the Egyptians who first used astrology to foretell the character of a person based on their date of birth. Star charts have been discovered in Egypt dating as far back as 4300 BC. The Chinese also developed a system of astrology around 2800 BC. It has evolved very differently than western astrology. The Greeks influenced Egyptian astrology with what they learned from the Babylonians. Ptolemy wrote a book on astrology that set down the current practice of using planets, houses and signs. Astrology became an important part of the culture of many ancient peoples. The Roman ruler Augustus (63 BC 14 AD) made coins adorned with his astrological sign of Capricorn. And later on... The Arabs and Persians followed the Greek teachings in astrology as well as other sciences like mathematics and medicine. Their practices were shared with Europe in the 12th century, which helped lead into the time known as the Renaissance. Many of the Persian and Muslim astronomers refuted astrology for scientific and religious reasons History of Astrology...Its decline Astrology began to decline in popularity after Rome fell Christianity claimed it was the work of the devil, though as the Church grew in power, they took up the practice of astrology for their own uses. St. Thomas Aquinas, for example, believed that the planets controlled everything. By the time the Renaissance was in full swing, astrology had gained favor once again. During the 17th century when the Age of Enlightenment began to take hold with its scientific accomplishments, astrology and astronomy became two different disciplines for the first time. History of Astrology...the Revival Astrology remained quietly in the background until a revival of interest in it at the beginning of the 20th century. During the last century, astrology rose in popularity through several astrology magazines and books. In the 1930s, the United States had a very popular astrology program airing on the radio that helped spark interest. The New Age movement began in the 1960s and "70s, and it brought astrology right along with it. Today, it is not surprising to find out that an international leader is consulting the stars. While some still refuse to believe in its predictions, just as many take it very seriously.

There are 10 Planets in astrology. For simplicity we refer to the Sun and Moon as planets but really they are called luminaries. Now put to memory each planet's Astrology glyph.

Copy or save the images above and print them out. Practice drawing the symbols. Take your time. For older individuals (like me) this may seem like a daunting task but stick with it. Once you have mastered the basic language of astrology (the symbols and glyphs) you are ready to place them on an astrology chart.

The Natural Astrology Chart

The natural astrology chart, or flat chart, always starts at 0.00 degree of Aries (the natural Ascendant of the Zodiac) and works its way counter-clockwise until it ends at 29.59.59 degrees Pisces. This is because the Western Tropical Zodiac aligns with the ecliptic and begins at the moment of the vernal (spring) equinox. The yearly cycle is likened to a circle and just like the circle it has 360 degrees. There are 12 Zodiac signs and each sign is precisely 30 degrees of arc. Below is a picture of the natural astrology chart. Study it carefully.

Save the blank astrology chart below and print it out. Practice putting the planets and Zodiac Signs correctly on the chart exactly like the picture above. Dont worry if you dont quite understand everything just yet. The important thing right now is for you to learn the symbols and their correct placement on the natural astrology chart. Good Luck!

Classifying Zodiac Signs

Classifying Zodiac Signs by Duality Each Sign has a Duality. Astrologers use different names such as assertive/passive, yin/yang, and male/female to describe the dualities. Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are all assertive (extroverted) Signs while Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are passive (introverted) Signs. Classifying Zodiac Signs by Modality There are three modes: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. The Cardinal Signs are efficacious and self starters. Fixed Signs are focused and determined. Mutable Signs are flexible and adaptable. Classifying Zodiac Signs by Element The Signs are further grouped into one of the four Elements. The Elements Fire, Earth, Air and Water each have its own temperament. The Fire Signs are vital and intense.

Earth Signs are practical and stable. Air Signs are social and intellectual. And last but not least the Water Signs are intuitive and emotional. No two Zodiac Signs are exactly alike. Try to familiarize yourself with the three classifications. It will give you a better understanding later on when interpreting an astrology chart. An Introduction
An Astrology Chart is divided into twelve sections which are referred to as the Astrological houses. Each house is related to a Zodiac Sign and is concerned with a different area of your life. Observe the Zodiac Sign glyph and house number on the Natural Chart below.

The houses are grouped into 3 main categories. Angular Houses These are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. These Astrological houses show how you initiate things. Its where the action begins. The house cusps of all 4 angular houses are very important points on an Astrology Chart. The most important of the 4 points are the Ascendant and Midheaven. Succedent Houses These are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses. These Astrological houses show the outcome of whatever was started in the angular houses. Cadent Houses These are the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses. These Astrological houses show how you maintain what was begun in the angular houses. Starting at the Ascendant, the Astrological houses are counted counter-clockwise one through twelve. Major Aspects
Conjunction Angle (0 degrees) allowed orb (8 degrees) The Conjunction emphasises the energy from two planets or from a planet and point. Blend the two planets together and you have a powerful force that can be either positive or negative depending on how its energy is used. Opposition Angle (180 degrees) allowed orb (7 or 8 degrees) The Opposition aspect brings a sense of awareness to the individual. Depending on the planets involved it may show an aptitude for seeing both sides of any given situation. On the negative side, its also thought to bring stress from two opposing forces. Square Angle (90 degrees) allowed orb (6 or 7 degrees) The Square is another powerful planetary aspect. Its energy is challenging; however, if the challenge is overcome, the end result can be very advantageous. Trine - Angle (120 degrees) - allowed orb (6 or 7 degrees) The Trine is considered an easy and harmonious aspect. Like the Square, the Inconjunct is challenging in nature and is often related to adjustments required by an individual. Although difficult, this aspect can prove most favorable if the adjustments are made successfully.

Minor Aspects
There are numerous minor planetary aspects. To keep things simple only the 3 most commonly used have been listed. Semi-Sextile Angle (30 degrees) Allowed orb (1 or 2 degrees) the Semisextile reveals unseen opportunity. The type of opportunity will depend on the Planets involved and the Signs and houses they are positioned in. Semi-square Angle (45 degrees) Allowed orb (1 or 2 degrees) A Semisquare has an irritating quality about it. It reveals an area that requires a change in attitude in order to move forward. Sesqui-square Angle (135 degrees) Allowed orb (1 or 2 degrees) The Sesqui-square is considered abrasive in nature. It will show an area of irritation or dissatisfaction.

Retrograde - This is not an aspect but rather a planetary motion which affects the aspects involved. Retrograde motion is when a planet appears to be moving backward. In actuality, the planets speed slows down giving the illusion that it is travelling backward.A retrograde planet in the birth chart reveals situations in life that will appear or develop later in time rather than earlier. Once you have become familiar with each planetary aspect and have memorized the glyphs (symbols) that go with it you are ready to take the next step.

Understanding the Birth Chart

Your Birth Chart (also referred to as a Natal chart or Horoscope) is a diagram that shows the position of the planets in the sky at the precise time you were born. Normally you will see a birth chart drawn as a circle. The circle represents you. Now imagine a horizontal line bisecting the circle; this represents the horizon line.
