Water : Types, sources and consequences of water pollution, water quality standards, Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, fluoride, nitrate. Soil : Physicochemical and Bacteriological sampling and analysis of soil. Soil pollution and control. Noise : Sources of noise pollution, measurement of noise and indices. Statistics : Definition, scope and application of statistics Collection, classification and presentation of data. Measures of central tendency, dispersion and skewness. Correlation - Scatter diagram, Karl Pearsons coefficient of correlation and Spearmans Rank Correlation. Curve fitting- least square method and its application to linear, quadratic and exponential curves. Regression- regression equation. Probability - the binomial and normal probability models. Tests of significance : Null and alternative hypothesis. Tests based on normal, students-t and chi-square distribution. Analysis of variance- one way and two-way classifications. Sampling in ecological studies- sampling units and frame, simple random, stratified random, systematic and cluster sampling. Design of Experiments- RBD, factorial CRD, split plot etc. Practical: Preparation of frequency table, calculation of mean, median, mode, geometric mean and harmonic mean. Calculation of mean deviation, standard deviation and coefficient of variation.
