INFORMATION.

Jubilee cycle of years and events:

This document covers a traditional (overlapping) 49 year period known as a Jubilee. Based on the interpretation of the texts it covers what agricultural and employment disciplines were involved over this week of weeks. It is a brief guide only. Modern interpretation has the Jubilee as a 50 year period, which is mathematically incorrect. The year of release (on the 49th year) had an additional year added where by all debts were recovered, and all land was renegotiated by the temple priests (as all the land was owned by YHWH). This 50th year was actually the first year of the next 49th year Jubilee and an additional year of non-productivity due to the negotiations involved and the covenant adhered to by YHWH. Table 1.

The Four Divisions of the (Ancient Hebrew) Day.

The ancient Hebrew day was quite different to what we use today. We currently use a simple system of discerning each day by a division of time nominated from Midnight to Midnight (or 12am to 12am) which is based on a 24 hour period of time. The fact that we use both a 24 hour day (inherited from the Egyptian/Babylonian systems) and that it starts from Midnight to Midnight, is purely based on the solar reckoning of each day as it recurrently appears. The Ancient Hebrews, as did most cultures in the past, used a different reckoning of time based on the lunar cycle, which was based on a 354 day year. The easiest way to ascertain a time of the month was to calculate each day from the lunar sign in the sky at night time. Leviticus 23:32 and you must afflict your souls on the ninth of the month in the evening. From evening to evening you should observe your Sabbath. Accordingly, the new Priestly week started on the evening of the Sabbath until the following evening of the next Sabbath. 2 Chronicles 23:8 So they took each one his men that were coming in on the Sabbath together with those going out on the Sabbath, for Je-hoiada the priest had not set the divisions free from duty. As a result of this, all calendrical days were established after Sunset, so that the new day could be assimilated with a new moon or parts thereof. (See Enoch for divisions of the moon) See Table 1. Mishmarot D (4Q325) states... On the twenty-fifth (evening) in (the first month) is the Sabbath of the week of Jediah. During the same week is the Feast of Barley on the twenty-sixth (day) in (the first month), after the Sabbath. The beginning of the second month is on the sixth day of (the week of) Jedaiah. The generic day started as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. Sunset to Midnight - Evening prayers, evening meal and off to sleep.

Midnight to Sunrise - Sleep Sunrise to Midday Midday to Sunset - The cock crows, morning prayers, meal and days activities* - Afternoon prayers, meal and days activities* until Sunset, which is the start of a new day; everything now repeats for the next day.

* Unless it is a Sabbath whereby little if no activities are allowed. Note: Quite literally, two priests enjoyed the same Sabbath, which is achieved with a hand over in the evening, after sunset. This hand over designates the start of the next day. This is proved with 4Q325 above which states both that Jediah enjoys his Sabbath on the 25th evening (of the month) which is now day one for him, and the end of day seven for Joiarib; and that the new month started on the sixth day of (the week of) Jediah. If in fact it were assumed that Jediahs week actually started on the 25th day (and not evening), then his week would actually be eight days long, which is impossible. Note: As three quarters of the day actually happens the following day, this is the day recorded in the texts. This explains why the priestly cycle starts the evening before. He would hold the evening prayers then eat and go to bed. His real duties would then start the next morning when he awoke. The fact that this lunar day is super-imposed now onto a solar calendar, harks back to earlier days, most likely from an earlier lunar calendar. Obviously, old habits die hard. Conclusion: All priestly cycles (week to week) started on the evening of the Sabbath, followed by an additional seven days of duties. At Sunset of the following Sabbath, the next priest would take over. See also: 4Q320 and 4Q321 which also confirms this system. This states that (for example) there is a full moon on the 30th day of the first month, on the fifth day of Jediah. The full moon itself was actually viewed on the evening of the 29th day of the first month, but recorded as being present in the 30th day. 2.

The Solar Gates or tables of Enoch

1. The following details on the tables of Enoch are designed to enable the reader to understand the correlation between his details, and the details of the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) calendrical decipherment. Scholarly opinion attributes the details of Enochs Solar and Lunar gate system with the DSS. The following tables are designed to enable an understanding of his methodology. Table 1 is based on the details outlined in chapter LXXI (71) which covers the first law of the luminaries; which covers the movements of the Sun. The following text of Enoch designates the gates as follows: 71:2 71:4 71:6 71:9 71:10 71:11 This is the first law of the luminaries. The Sun and the light arrive at the gates of heaven six gates were at the rising, and six at the setting of the sun. First proceeds forth that great luminary, which is called the Sun In the first manner it goes forth in the first month by a great gate. It goes forth through the fourth of those six gates, which are at the rising of the sun. And in the fourth gate, through which the Sun with the Moon proceeds

71:13 During that period (first month) the day is lengthened from the day, and the night curtailed from the night for thirty days. And then the day is longer by two parts than the night. 71:14 The day is precisely ten parts, and the night is eight. (total parts = 18 per day) 71:16 (Second month) Then the day becomes lengthened by a second portion, so that it is eleven parts: while the night becomes shortened, and is only seven parts. 71:18 (Third month) At that period the day is longer than the night, being twice as long as the night; and becomes twelve parts; 71:19 But the night is shortened, and becomes six parts. Then the sun rises up, that the day may be shortened, and the night lengthened. Etc Enoch uses parts of a day/night instead of hours. They always total 18. To put this into a 24 hour ratio, this means that each part represents 80 minutes (of day or night) either increasing or decreasing from the start to the finish of each month. (24 x 60 minutes = 1440 minutes 18 = 80 minutes.) So one and a third hours are either gained or lost per month. This data, however, is only appropriate if you are on or near 50 degrees north of the equator (say Kiev in the Ukraine). There (give or take a few minutes) in the summer solstice the hours of daylight are 16 and the night are 8. This is a two to one ratio resembling the 12 to 6 parts of Enoch. Similarly, it is reversed during the winter solstice. In Israel (Jerusalem - 31 degrees north of equator) however, in the summer solstice the hours of daylight is only 14 and the night is 10. In real terms, only 2 hours of daylight are lost leading up to the equinox (12:12). This means that only 40 minutes are lost per month, which is exactly half of Enochs figures. Had the day been divided into 36 parts, then it would have been accurate for the Qumran location. 3.

The Possible stages in the development of the Calendar.

Stages in the development of the Chronology of Hebrew Calendars (Mathematically Hypothetical)

Stage. 1 (Lunar influence) Most likely lunar year of 354 days (starting with 30, 29, 30, 29... etc) for 12 moons x 3 cycles (=36) plus an additional 30 (37th moon) to give 1092 days. This system is just as accurate, however, cannot be delineated with the number 7. Note, to determine the proper sighting of the moon you needed to wait until after dusk to see the sign in the night sky. Thus days began at dusk due to this reason. Stage. 2 (possible Egyptian influence) Perhaps inspired by the fact that the Egyptians had a royal cubit of 7 palms which had 28 fingers; this model incorporated the magical 7 that is required to emulate the biblical number of days in a week. Note: it is historically accepted that the Egyptians, Babylonians and Hebrews shared a common weights and measure system. Carrying around a 28 finger long cubit would also double up as a day/month calendar. Carrying around a staff or rod of 3 cubits length would account for 3 months, or a total season. At some stage, it is possible that a priest discovered that 28 also goes into 1092 days, giving 39 months. A third of this is 13 months, the new length of a year. Suddenly, moonths are now months of 28 days (4 weeks exactly), and not alternating between 29 and 30. The lunar year of 354 days has grown by 10 days to 364 days which mathematically is as close as they can get to the solar year of 365.2422 days. Stage. 3 (possible Babylonian influence) Perhaps under pressure by Egyptian (360+5), Babylonian (360) and other calendrical systems, that had only 12 months per year, the old calendar had to adapt and change. The only way to conform to this system was to divide their 91 day season into three months. Logically, 30 + 30 + 31 was chosen. However their month was now no longer a nice system of exactly 4 weeks per month, so a weekly roster (priestly cycle) was possibly established to maintain the original weeks of 7 days which would intermingle with the new system, as an independent cycle.

The new calendar now preserved the original amount of days of stage 2 (364), still retained the lunar observance for the start of days (Dusk), still retained the original seven day weekly cycle, still retained the original 37 lunar cycle (and possibly some important celebratory dates); but most importantly it conformed to a 12 month year which was imperative for trade. It also delineated the year into four seasons, the weeks repeating themselves in each season. This was extremely important, as originally a full moon or new moon could be used as a physical sign in the sky. Solar years only have four rather invisible signs, which are the equinoxes and solstices; but are at least now prevalent as the start of the months 1, 4, 7 and 10. However, the only way to create a major cycle which incorporates all the days, weeks, priestly cycles, moons, months, seasons, years and Jubilees is to create a cycle of 294 years so that everything comes back into balance. Such is the purpose of the Otot. Note: all three stages have the same lunar pattern super-imposed on each calendar. (See Below)

Comments on 4Q321a. 1. 2. 4Q321a is an exact replica (or an additional copy) of 4Q320. It is rather fortunate that a lot of the missing text from 4Q320 is recorded in 4Q321a, further confirming the accuracy of both. In fact, out of the 43 lines of text from 4Q321a (Fr 1- 3), an amazing 24 lines of this text was missing from 4Q321. Most interestingly is the length of the columns. Each column appears to hold exactly nine months worth of data. Therefore over the 6 years (or 72 months) this scroll would have had exactly 8 columns.

2. In month seven, Vermes places the numbers ]9 and 20 and 2[ (19, 20, 21) before month seven. However, I believe this to be a mistake. This sequence can only happen four times in months 1, 4, 7 and 10 where the three dates are in one sign. He must have assumed that these fragments were from month six, which is why the signs he allocated for (19, 20, 21) and (13, 14) and (, 27, 28) are exactly one sign out. It may be that they are from months 1 or 4 (as 10 is accounted for), however this is unlikely. 3. Perhaps unknown to Vermes, is that the 2 2 3 pattern repeats every three months and Not every second month. His data for month 12 is absolutely correct; however, he used the model of month 10 to group his dates and signs. This is evident by the fact that he neglected to include day 31 at the end of the text. Had he had the data for month 9 (which ends on the 31st) he may have realised this mistake. Vermes had encountered the fact that at the end of every three months (throughout the texts), it ended on the 31st, yet he had to leave it out to follow his model. Note: The following comments are based on the raw mathematical (translated) data and the hypothetical data supplied by Vermes (which is in italics). The following corresponds to each column from 1 to 7. 1. Given that only the 10th day was given, I agree with the placement of 8th and 9th days in the text provided by Vermes. Naturally from this, it can be expanded forward and backward to the 1st and 30th day of the month. 2. The Night songs are verified on both day 8 and 10. Vermes places the same value for day 9, so working on his hunch I have placed the value 8 for all days of the month. (Which also makes complete sense) 3. The words of praise (during the night) is distinctly confirmed on day nine with the value of forty-two. Above it on the table, which is day eight, we have a value of forty-something. This column is verified by column 5. 4. The Day of songs column is purely hypothetical, but based on my theory of its connection with the Book of Enoch: Chap 71. Section 13 (Paris MS): Paragraph 13; It could possibly be 10 in number. More on this later. 5. Words of Praise (during the day) gives a value on day eight of 16 and on day ten of 20. Mathematically speaking, the only assumption for day nine would be 18 which follows the basic mathematical principal. 6. The table for the total songs does not appear in the text, but is a possible mathematical guide to what the value is. More on this data to follow. 7. The Total words of praise column also does not appear in the text, however, given the evidence in both columns 3 and 5; the tally appears to be a total of 60 for each day, and slowly growing by a factor of 2 during the day. This accounts for column 3 reducing by a factor of 2 each day, and for column 5 which increases by a factor of 2 each day. The fact that the number 60 (which is the base 60 system used in the sexagisimal system of the Babylonians i.e. 60 seconds and 60 minutes) is used, may conform to the possible age of the document.

Observational Conclusion: 1. There are 8 (eight) evening songs per day over this month. 2. There is a possible 10 (ten) daily songs per day over this month. (See below) 3. There are a total of 60 words of praise each complete day and night, although one column is increasing by a factor of 2 parts per 60, whilst the other column is being reduced by 2 parts per day as they progress towards the end of the month. END of (4Q334), but is there a connection(?)

Note: The following data is a Mathematical leap of faith, however the connection, if true, is uncanny. It would also fully explain the number of songs and words of praise for 4Q334. The Book of Enoch, Chap LXXI (71) [Sect XIII (13)] Paragraphs 9-14. 9. In the same manner it goes forth in the first month by a great gate. 10. It goes forth through the fourth of those six gates, which are at the rising of the sun. 11. And in the fourth gate, through which the sun with the moon proceeds*, in the first part of it, there are twelve open windows: from which issues out a flame, when they are opened at their proper periods. 12. When the sun rises in heaven, it goes forth through this fourth gate thirty days, and by the fourth gate in the west of heaven on a level with it descends. 13. During that period the day is lengthened from the day, and the night curtailed from the night for thirty days. And then the day is longer by two parts than the night. 14. The day is precisely ten parts, and the night is eight * Sun and Moon proceeds = day 1, month 1. Note: The Book of Enoch (in this chapter) highlights the daily change of time from season to season, intricately explaining how the days get longer and the evenings shorter, or the opposite, or when they are the same (Equinox). Whilst the Hebrews had adapted to the use of 24 hours per day; they also used parts of a day/night with a total of 18 from sunset to sunset. However, they were fully conversant with the Babylonian hour. Without getting into the full decipherment of Enochs passage I will give you a summarized table:

Note: The hours of day/night are actually the correct data for the end of each month. I.e. The Equinox in month 12 is on the 31st, and that evening also which is now the 1st of the first month. Therefore, looking at month 1, the 10 hours of daylight, and 8 hours of nighttime are at the end of that month. This means that from the start of the month to the end of the month, a full hour (part) of daylight is gained, and a full hour of nighttime is lost. Surely there must be some mechanism to account for this? To date we have established that the calendar covers the days, lunar cycles (full/new), phases of the moons (1/14, 2/14 etc..), Priestly cycles, Festivals/Feasts, Sabbaths, Zodiacs and progression of the days from Equinox to Solstice and back again as shown above. The only thing that is missing is the hours (or parts) of the day and night as they increase or decrease. Hypotheses: I believe that the data in 4Q334 relates to this. The songs sung in the evening and daytime reflect the month of the season and which gate they are in. The words of praise, both reducing and increasing 2 parts per 60 (for a 30 day month) are literally telling the time. This means that each day is either increasing or decreasing by (60 minutes 30 days) 2 minutes per day. END

Step 4. (cont...) - Both Jehezekel and Gamul appear in the seventh month in year six (6). Jehezekels week is at the start of the month, whilst Gamuls week is almost half way through it. This is the greatest clue as to what was happening in the above fragmentary text. - In fact, Document (Mishmarot B (4Q321) Fragment 5) expressly states that (in year six): The seventh month begins in the week of Jehezekel. In the week of Jehezekel is the Day of Memorial. In the week of Jachin is the Day of Atonement. In the week of Gamul is the Feast of Tabernacles (Booths). - Therefore, using existing language common to other similar texts (such as above), more information can now be added using italics, and also correcting Vermes limited assumptions. In the week of Jehezekel which is Aemilius killed in the seventh month the week of Gamul Aemilius killed Should now read: (From original text ) [The Seventh month (year six of the priestly cycle) begins in the week of Je)] hehezekel, which is [in the month in which] Aemilius killed. It was in the seventh month in the week of Gamul that Aemilius killed Step 5. Identifying who Aemilius is? The author of the decipherment of Text E (4Q333) states that Aemilius (no doubt M. Aemilius Scaurus, Governor of Syria) was the person involved in this text, possibly leaves us without doubt. This particular gentleman is also mentioned in the Books of Pliny the Elder among many other authors. It is also dated (the document) to the late second or the first half of the first century B.C.E. Step 6. Identifying whether or not Aemilius (was) killed, (is) killed, or killed (someone). The fact that whatever happened, did happen in the week of Gamul which also correlates with the Feast of Tabernacles in the seventh month, is definitely something worth noting. It is most likely, however, that Aemilius did kill someone during the Feast of Tabernacles in year 6 of the priestly cycle. This is purely hypothetical, but may correspond to an event mentioned in other texts.
