Building Your Own House

Daniel E Carter High School Geometry

Common Core Standards: Make Geometric Constructions HSG-CO.D.12 Make formal geometic condtructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems HSG-GMD.A.3 Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres to solve problems Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations HSG-MG.A.1 Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects HSG-MG.A.3 Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on ratios). Lesson Summary: This is an individual lesson where students will build their own house with a price and volume limits. This is a refresher of what information I have brought to them in the earlier on how to calculate area and volume. While doing this, students will have to draw a sketch of their house on graphing paper buy using straightedge, compass, etc Students then will use Prezi to present their house to me. They will have to describe what features they did to the house. Then tell me what they are going to put in the house. What they put in the house has no price but they have to draw where it will be in the house Estimated Duration: For this lesson to be completed it will take at least 5 days of 50 minutes in class Commentary I will grab the minds of my students with my lesson by presenting how to use their money wisely. I also plan on using the interest of students who like drawing and being creative by them designing on paper of how their houses will look like. I will also grab the students that like to write because at the end they have to present it to the class by using Prezi. One of the hardest issues of this project is If one thing goes wrong or we dont have enough time in class they will have to do a huge amount at home. Another thing that could go wrong is kids wont put effort into it and make it the easiest house and not fallow the guide lines.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: First 5 minutes settle down students and get them ready for the day Next 15 minutes: Introduce activity by handing out the guidelines and rubrics. While handing out the paper describe they activity in depth that they are building their own house. While building there house they have price, area, and volume limit on how much room they have. Also tell them the price range of wall per foot carpet per square area and price range for how much air ducts will cost. Also describe how they have to draw out the floor plan and math of how they got there price. Last tell them they have to do a Prezi, which is like a power point but more interactive to show what their house will look like. Next 10 minutes: show my students my house that I have created. Then show them a past students presentation and building to have more examples to help students understand. Last 15-20 minutes show how to use Prezi by making new word boxes add pictures and anything else that can be used Before they head out I will have them watch Kahn Academy for each subject to understand it and then I will clear up any question the next two days Day 2: This will be the next day if I cannot finish presenting Prezi this would be the first 10mins if needed. If I did finish demonstrating Prezi I will start my lesson by handing out notes where formulas will be on it to help measure area of each shape. This would help students get all the information to start designing their houses. On the rest of the paper there will be problems where I do a couple problems, then both students and I do a couple and then finally students will do the last couple. This will take about 40 minutes to do all the information. While students are using there notes I will use a smart board to interact with the students and have them work in front of the class. Day 3: The third day will be all about 3D figures which will take about 20 minutes. In the 20 minutes I will have a practice sheet where students will do a couple problems in which students will figure out how to find volume and surface area. For this reason 3D figures are not hard to solve because you are just multiplying depth to area. While teaching I will use the smart board to demonstrate how to solve problems and get students to interact. Day 4 Will all is towards Prezi and drawing the blue prints of the house. For the First 5 minutes if students want to use the laptops they can grab and use it towards Prezi. If they do use the computer, I will have the students turn around so I can see the computer screen to make sure they are on task. If they are not using the computers students will have paper to draw out the blue prints. I will allow students to use coloring pencils and markers to make it better. Day 5 will be a repeat of Day 4 but at the end I will collect all the work.

Pre-Assessment: Before every chapter the student will take a pre-quiz to help me understand where they are in the chapter. For the student that missed the most problems and the problems that are missed the most I will help my students solve the problems and make sure they understand. These question will be simple problems from the chapter I am teaching from to make sure the kids that are doing the problems are not scared of the subject and dont want to hate the subject. Scoring Guidelines: The quizzes that I will hand out before each chapter will not be graded for correction but for

understanding of the problem. This will help me assess the student to see where he or she is placed in the subject but also where I need to go with the lesson. During the 3rd, 4th, and 5th day I will go around making sure all student will understand what they are being asked to do to assess what is going through their heads. Post-Assessment: The post assessment will be based upon how well they did on the project that made them use technology to present what they did in class and how they worked on the project. Another post assessment will be having the students take a quiz or test in which they have to be graded on if they understand what was taught. Scoring Guidelines: For the Quiz or Test it will be a percentage of how many they got right. While the building a house will be just a passing grade unless I have more time for them to do the lesson on how they figured the area of the house.

Differentiated Instructional Support If I could alter the activities for more of the advanced kids I would make them do a two stories or three stories house in which they have to have the most amount of room with the cheapest price. Or I would make them figure out pricing of each piece of equipment and add the price to the budget.

Extension http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/hit-list-of-geometry-formulas.html This website dummies for geometry is a list of formulas and a little bit of information on how to use the formulas for students to know the basics http://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/basic-geometry Kahn Academy is a great web site for student to work with if they need any help. For majority of the lesson I will have student look at a couple problems for homework but not all of them since that will take a while.

Homework Options and Home Connections Just what Salman Kahn said, classrooms are flipping. Some teachers do agree with this I would also like to use his videos for students to get another view on the subject at hand. The teacher would also use the book where there are the answers in the back of the book. This helps students make sure they got the right answer if not they will work it over again. Interdisciplinary Connections There is a couple subjects that the teacher can intertwine with this lesson the teacher could put the fields of English, business, and personal finance. The educator could use the English for the Prezi and how to wright a reasonable essay of what they are doing with their house. The Business and Personal Finance will help with

making the student realistically use their money when buying products so they dont use too much.
