turned old dilapidated farm infrastructure into state-of-the-art lecture rooms and library offering courses on Crop Science and Animal Science and already we have seen what they are doing here. They also have a very good crop of tobacco and maize, said Dr Muchena. Minister Muchena said the systems already in place meant that it will not take very long to establish a fully

fledged university, because we already have 20 students in stream, who started last year and they are going on with the lectures. Dr Muchena paid special tribute to the Permanent Secretary in her Ministry, Dr Washington Mbizvo for facilitating the establishment of the University and UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura, who used his many years of experience to effect the

establishment of the University She added that the concept for UZMCAST is not to have one campus at Dozmery Farm, but to have campuses in other places and that will involve discussions with leadership in the province, and with industry for the strategic placements of the other campuses. This week (last week) our Bill for the establishment of Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology will be going to the Committee on Legislation after that it goes to Cabinet and after that to Parliament, that is how a university is established, said the Minister. Speaking at the same event UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura said UZ has made quite modest advances in establishing UZMCAST, and hope that the systems we are setting up become a strong foundation for the new university. We are almost there but we still wait for one or two technical issues to be addressed and I want to believe the Provincial Minister for Mashonaland, who is here, will be able to assist us to get our offer letter and proceed to develop the Master Plan which will then enable us to have a much more clearer picture of how we are developing although our thinking is that the university must be within the people, that means we need several campuses in Mashonaland East for the university to have any impact and contribute to the various activities that go on the Province, said Professor Nyagura. The Vice Chancellor added that they had already engaged Kushinga Phikelela Agricultural College to change their curriculum so that holders of the Diploma will be able to enjoy the same facility like those at Gwebi and Chibhero Colleges who now come to UZ to do their degrees. Professor Nyagura added that UZMCAST was going to run a variety

of courses to boost and stimulate agriculture, and best practices, whether in the cropping area or livestock area. We think we have a major role to play in order to create a new type of interest which is geared towards wealth creation among the people, but you know we must first demonstrate it ourselves so that people believe in whatever we are doing. They should believe in our skills and competences and in this philosophy of wealth creation at household level, he said. Speaking at the same event, Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs Minister, The Hon. Mr Simbaneuta Mudarikwa commended the work being done by UZ: For Mashonaland East Province, we are going to support what is happening here. We now here have an institution that is going to produce graduates who will not only be able to manage farms but also be trained farmers themselves. The previous arrangement where we had graduates only wanting to go and sell fertiliser and chemicals is a thing of the past. We salute the UZ for what they have done and also the element of depending on the fiscus is now history, because they are producing quality crops and generating their own revenue, said Mr Mudarikwa.

UZ and Econet Wireless launch EcoSchool Project

UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Nyagura speaking during the launch of Eco-School Project

he launch of the Ecoschool represents the latest milestone in what has been a long walk that Econet Wireless and the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) have travelled together. This was said by UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura during the launch of the EcoSchool Project, which will see students learn through mobile and tablet based applications. Professor Nyagura said EcoSchool goes beyond simply making tablets and textbooks available at a cheaper price. It also opens up access to materials and courses from across the globe in new dynamic ways. Most tertiary students in Africa cannot afford core educational materials. They have to share textbooks, photocopy them or utilise libraries which are not always up-to-date in resources. However, in many instances, students simply go without books. With technology, we can now change this unsatisfactory situation, said Professor Nyagura. He added that Internet connectivity can provide access to masses of educational materials available on-

line at low cost, on handheld e-reading devices and can store more than a thousand books. The Vice Chancellor reiterated that digital content can be updated faster and more regularly than printed materials and such content can easily be displayed in ways that are engaging and interactive for this new generation of learners.

Econet Wireless has proven once again, to be at the forefront of technology

As a valued and strategic partner, Econet Wireless has proven once again, to be at the forefront of technology. The University of Zimbabwe welcomes the opportunity to participate in yet another first from Econet, as we continue to support and invest in our students, he said.

UZ WEEKLY, Vol. 3, Issue 3, February 14, 2014

Professor Nyagura commended Econet for supporting the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (CHS) in 2009, at a time the college was facing virtual closure. We treasure these partnerships, and wish to express our profound gratitude to Econet Wireless for all their support. Together, the task of bringing positive transformation to our nation is being achieved, said Professor Nyagura. Speaking at the same event Econet Wireless Chief Executive Officer, Mr Douglas Mboweni said Econet Wireless has been able to produce products that have tranformed the environment.

Ladies and Gentlemen what you are seeing today is a continuation of unleashing that capacity that has been stored in human beings, and what we are doing today is that continuation and we know greater things are possible and these things will be unleashed, as long as we realise the capacity that is stored within us said Mr Mboweni. He said when Econet Wireless started, they were focusing on solutions which they called for Zimbabweans by Zimbabweans and have since moved on to providing solutions for the world by Zimbabweans. Speaking at the same event Econet Services Chief Executive Officer, Mr Darlington Mandivenga said the EcoSchool is an educational platform that provides scholars and educators access to affordable, reliable, anytime, anywhere educational content of world class standards. We want to overrule old methods of study, we want to encourage you, we want to motivate you, and if the two do not work, we want to coerce you and if coercing does not work, we want to force you, because we know

it will only benefit you, your families, your companies and the nation at large. The worlds biggest library can now fit into the palm of your hand said Mr Mandivenga. In proposing a Vote of Thanks, UZ Deputy Dean at the College of Health Sciences, Dr Chiratidzo Ndlovu said she was glad that the launch was happening at that point in time, because there was a lot that was happening at the UZ, particulary in relation to medical education. I would like to thank Econet Wireless through their Chief Excutive Officer, Mr Douglas Mboweni, and also our Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura, for embracing the new generations ways of doing things, said Dr Ndlovu. She challenged lecturers to master the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) because students will be so well versed with the knowledge which they get from the online textbooks.

Postgraduate Centre holds workshop on writing skills

Such rankings are intended to provide a measure of academic excellence, and are the appropriate instruments devised so far, to compare universities the world over. Ranking scores therefore count publications and citations as good measures of research quality, he said.
Director of the UZ Postgraduate Centre, Professor Zifikile Makwavarara

Pro Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Professor Chipo Dyanda

he University of Zimbabwe (UZ) is empowering its academics to produce high quality research articles that will be the envy of other researchers all over the world. This was said by UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Martin Nyagura in a speech read on his behalf by UZ Pro Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Professor Chipo Dyanda at the Official Opening of the Higher Degrees Workshop on Writing and Publishing for High Impact Journals. Professor Nyagura said the motivation behind workshops such as that one, was to equip participants with skills of writing journal articles, so that they could contribute towards the creation of knowledge that will have both national and international impact. It is clear that the majority of our academic staff at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) are not sufficiently productive. For those who do write, the quality of the journal articles, in most cases, leaves a lot to be desired, said Professor Nyagura. The Vice Chancellor added that throughout the academic world, universities are ranked according to their research output, as well as citation counts, and it is incumbent upon the university to adopt and conform to this reality.

Ranking scores therefore count publications and citations as good measures of research quality
He said Workshops of this kind should therefore be taken very seriously, as they contribute to the means by which UZ, as an academic brand, can market itself to the nation, to Africa and beyond. A university with active researchers is bound to produce a large number of high quality publications. Such a university is likely to have more highly-cited researchers, who will produce highly-cited papers in high impact journals. This is one of the most effective means by which a university can attract highly talented academics and train students of high caliber, he said. He urged participants to have a clearer grasp of aspects of journal article writing, which will help them to write articles of outstanding quality, which is in line with the universitys endeavour to become one of the top ranked universities in Africa and beyond. Speaking at the same occasion, Director of the UZ Postgraduate Centre, Professor Zifikile Makwavarara said publishing was the hallmark of academic excellence and academics

carry a huge responsibility to create knowledge and share it. The Workshop is therefore designed to help academics to share information through publishing journals, not just any journal, but those with a high impact factor, which means that the quality has to be very high indeed, as these journals are competitive by nature, said Professor Makwavara. She said the Workshop objectives were to equip academics with professional writing skills of scientific journal articles; equip academics to define and publish their scientific work; appraise academics on scientific language for publishing, as well as various publishing styles; help academics to develop draft papers for publication and to eventually have all articles drafted in the workshop accepted for publication.

The Workshop is therefore designed to help academics to share information through publishing journals, not just any journal, but those with a high impact factor

rofessor Sheunesu Mpeperekis 28 years of academic life at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has helped to strengthen the International image of the institution.

Professor Sheunesu Mpepereki presenting a Public Lecture at the UZ

This was said by UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura during the inaugural lecture presented by Professor Sheunesu Mpepereki on Impact Research and Science in Agriculture, Building Nitrogen Fertilizer Factories on Farmers Fields: Technology to cut Fertilizer Costs: Food on the Table; Money in the Pocket. Professor Nyagura said Professor Mpepereki has received several awards that include the Rockefeller Agricultural Sciences Career Fellowship (1995); the Rockefeller Food Security Career Fellowship (2000); the RUFORUM Merit Award for Outstanding Impact Research in Smallholder Agriculture (2009), the First Prize for the AU-NEPAD Impact Research and Science in Africa (FMPRESSA) Award (2010), and on 14th March 2013, the Presidential Award for Distinguished Science and Technology in the area of Soyabean Research and Development in the Service of Zimbabwe from His Excellency, President R. G. Mugabe in rec8

ognition of his contribution to the field of Agriculture. Speaking at the same event, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr

Charles Mtisi said Professor Mpepereki is now viewed as a pioneering agricultural scientist who has mainstreamed soya bean production technologies among the resource poor smallholder farmers and the large scale farmers, thereby contributing to their economic empowerment. Due to his relentless and uninterrupted work, and his efforts in promoting the production, processing and facilitating marketing of soya bean and its products, by both small and large scale farmers, Professor Mpeperekis achievements in improving the livelihoods of the farmers has not gone unnoticed, said Dr Mtisi. Using of the stakeholders in the research process and applying the value chain approach or integrated agricultural research for development is now the trend in the faculty, farmer participatory research practice is now common. SAPP donates Electricity Trading Platform to UZ

he University of Zimbabwe (UZ) received an Electricity Trading Platform, an organized Computer System (hardware and software) from Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) that allows electricity buyers and sellers to submit their bids electronically, indicating their intention to buy or sell power to the pool. The concept used is similar to the one used at the stock exchange, except that, in this case, the commodity is electricity. In his acceptance speech UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura said the donated equipment will be used to provide training in electricity trading to students and staff and

We are also available for transferring the technology to UZ during the time you start providing your short course. When you want to develop a programme or short course that you can offer, we will be available to assist to design the course as we did for the University of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa where we ensured that the courses were run smoothly, he said. UZ Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Engineer Wilson Nyemba, applauded the relationship between SAPP and UZ that will plug the shortfalls that the faculty might have in training. He said the Faculty of Engineering has already started to think about ideas of how to make use of this equipment.

industry partners, through the Centre for Continuing Engineering Education (CCEE). I want to express our gratitude to SAPP for donating this equipment to UZ. We must also recognise that SAPP has done literally everything to make this piece of equipment functionally here by transporting and setting it up and paying for air conditioning systems required, said Professor Nyagura. The Vice Chancellor added that what remains was for UZ to show a similar practical commitment as we are accepting the piece of equipment, to have a well conceived agenda of what we are going to do with the equipment in the area of training students, training of people in industry and in research. He said he would want to see more people trained and be able to use the equipment and how to optimise various other things that can be done by the equipment. We must also include in our research package the ideas of coming up with enhancements of a hardware nature or enhancements of a software nature and in this regard I am expecting more meaningful collaboration between the Electrical Engineering

Department and Computer Science Department. Professor Nyagura said the 21st Century requires more than just exposure of students to books, it now requires students to be taken outside the traditional learning box and be put in a new environment which embraces work and practitioners. Speaking at the same event Chief Executive Officer of SAPP, Dr Lawrence Musaba said the donation of the equipment to UZ will actually strengthen the link between UZ and SAPP and it was going to be the beginning of long term cooperation between the two institutions. We are obviously hoping that the University of Zimbabwe will better use the equipment since it has experience in research and definitely they will be able to do many things with the equipment and we will benefit even ourselves from the research carried out by the university, said Dr Musaba. Dr Musaba added that the research output will be of benefit to SAPP because they know exactly how in future they can develop their own software as a market operator, because at the moment they rely on third party software.

UZ Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Engineer Wilson Nyemba

We will use the equipment for training our students in electricity trading, since it is a new concept to the Faculty. We think this is an opportunity for us in the Faculty of Engineering to start such a programme. Some of you are also familiar with some of the short courses we are teaching in Energy Management, and this is an opportunity to make use

of high-tech modern equipment, said Engineer Nyemba. He added that the equipment will help in research, not only in electricity trading, but also other avenues of developing modules or software for all sorts of different aspects and this is what we are going to use the equipment for. Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) Managing Director, Engineer Julian Chinembiri said he was excited by the donation to the UZ, as ZETDC plays a critical role in the Southern African Power Pool because of our geographic location in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). He said most of the

power which flows in the region passes through the ZESA network. Electricity Trading is a new phenomenon which as a utility, we are happy that we will able to support the Faculty of Engineering at UZ to build a Division of Electricity trading at the UZ. We will be ready to give you the practical experience that you need in that field and we will also continue to take students on attachment so that they see the practical side of engineering said Engineer Chinembiri.

Contrary and Innovative Thinking

or many years 19th Century English Physician, Edward Jenner worked to find a cure for smallpox. After studying many cases, he reached an impasse in his thinking. Then he reversed his perception of the problem. Instead of focusing on people who had smallpox, he switched his attention to people who never had smallpox. He found that dairymaids rarely got the disease. It turned out that most dairymaids had had cowpox, a similar but usually nonfatal affliction. Cowpox had served to vaccinate its victims against the more dangerous small pox. This led to Jenners concept of vaccinating people. You might also try reversing the order in which you do a particular operation or project. Designer Christopher Williams tells the following story about an architect who built a cluster of large office buildings that was set in a central green. When construction was completed, the landscape crew asked him where he wanted the sidewalks between the buildings. Not yet, was the architects reply. Just plant the grass solidly between the buildings. This was done, and by late summer the new lawn was laced with pathways of trodden grass, connecting building-to-building and building to outside. As Williams put it, The paths followed the most efficient line between the points of connection, turned easy curves rather than right angles, and were sized according to traffic flow. In the fall, the architect simply paved in the pathways. Not only did the pathways have a design beauty, but they responded directly to user needs. Doing the opposite of whats expected can also be an effective strategy in such competitive situations as sports, business, warfare, romance, etc. In most endeavours, we build up certain expectations about what the other side will or wont do. example, a third and one situation will typically cause the defense to prepare for a plunge into the line. In retailing, stores bet heavily that advertising between Thanksgiving and Christmas will pay big dividends. In politics, most candidates will have a last-minute media blitz. In these situations, trends get established. When you do the opposite of what people are expecting, chances are good that youll catch them off-guard and be more successful in reaching your objective. As a creative exercise, make a list of what you could do to be less successful and go in the opposite direc-

tion of your goals. This can be both hilarious and revealing. Think of ideas that are impractical. Come up with as many unusual and unorthodox ideas as you can. When freed from normalcy and reality expectations, you might come up with a few gem ideas that you wouldnt normally have thought of. So dont be afraid to be different and try something radical now and then. Whether in love, business, sports, any endeavour for that matter, fortune often favours the bold.

Famous Quotes of Sir Francis Bacon . . .

Natural abilities are like natural plants, they need pruning by study. Meaning: Talent will not carry you to success. All natural talents must be cultivated and tamed through education and study. No great masterpiece came out perfectly the first time. Everything requires a little bit of editing.

In this theater of mans life, it is reserved only for God and for angels to be lookers-on. Meaning: The life of one individual can often feel lonely, because you and the creator are the only one that gets to see everything you think and go through.

If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties. Meaning: Though confidence is not always a negative quality, being very assured in your beliefs and opinions will often lead to a breaking point. As soon as you come upon something that contradicts your certainties, your entire belief system will be broken. However, if you take information as it comes to you and form ideas from there, you will surely come to more stable conclusions.

He of whom many are afraid ought to fear many. Meaning: When many people fear the power of a single individual, that individual should be worried of the possible consequences of the fearful or oppressed group attempting to rebel or seize power.
About the Author Sir Francis Bacon was a 17th Century English courtier and philosopher. While his political career ended in resignation and a short prison sentence, his philosophical pursuits were much more lucrative. He played an integral role in the scientific revolution of the English Renaissance. Bacon set up a new method of experimentation and reinvented the way man interacted with the world around him scientifically. Many have credited him as the founding father deductive reasoning, which set an early precedent for modern scientific method.
