Ideas drive the design industry and are fundamental to Design for Publishing at NUA. We cover a range of communication media that always stem from initial exploration of ideas on paper. The course delivery encourages a broad historical perspective on the print aspects of design. It embraces design for digital media and the opportunities this provides. You explore the interrelated elds of typography, layout, pagination and formatting through practical projects that cover aspects of visual communication, typography, bookbinding, book design and editorial design. While your creativity is informed by the editorial content of the communication you are designing for, you are encouraged to be experimental, inventive and to

explore the possibilities each brief offers. Live briefs set by industry such as the Design Editor of The Sunday Times will help extend your vocational and professional understanding of publishing. Tutors bring commercial sensibilities and strong industry links to support you with work placements and contacts. A liaison group of creative professionals inform the curriculum to ensure what you learn is relevant to the workplace. Your nal work should demonstrate your unique approach to design which showcases technical competency and creative air. Year One In Year One all Graphics students work together as you develop an understanding of universal design principles. This grounding not only prepares you for your progression into your chosen discipline, but also promotes an understanding of the work in other pathways, whilst also developing the group dynamic and peer learning. COURSE CONTENT

You will have opportunities to work on joint projects between Graphic Design, Design for Publishing and Graphic Communication designed to establish the beginnings of collaborative practice, a skill that is so important to the industry you will be entering.

A large, open plan design studio offers spaces for collaborative working, group crit sessions and individual project work with access to professional creative software on iMacs. Youll use a comprehensive in-house print workshop equipped with professional-quality digital printers, with on hand support from a team of workshop technicians, capable of producing prints from A4 to 1m wide on a variety of media at a fraction of the cost of going to a commercial printer. A large-bed laser cutter will enable you to work with card, board and acrylic materials. Youll access the Media Resource Centre to borrow digital cameras, lights and other lming equipment.

The lecture programme at NUA has been outstanding. Ive listened to the likes of Michael C Place, Sean Perkins and Tony Brook, arguably some of the most inuential designers within the industry.

Potential career paths for Designers include editorial, book publishing, newspapers and digital. Designers also work for studios or on a freelance commission basis.

I work across a range of sections for the newspaper, such as supplements, the iPad edition and the main newspaper. The course at NUA taught me how to further my projects, convey my ideas to others, work in groups, be inspired and much, much more. All skills that I still use today. Entry criteria We are interested in your creativity and individuality and therefore interview selected applicants who apply before the January UCAS deadline. The key focus of the application process is your portfolio of work but all courses also have minimum entry requirements. For details see: www.nua.ac.uk/study/apply

Students with disabilities Offers are made on the basis of merit alone. NUA welcomes applications from all including those with disabilities or specic learning differences (such as dyslexia). International applicants Most undergraduate applicants will apply through UCAS. However, it is possible for international applicants to submit a direct application for BA courses. All International Foundation Course applicants should apply directly to the University. Application forms can be downloaded from the website or requested via email. After you apply you will be contacted directly with information about submitting your portfolio and taking part in an interview. For applicants in the UK you will have the option of attending an interview in person, at which point you will present your portfolio. For applicants outside the UK you will be asked to submit a digital portfolio prior to a Skype interview. For specic academic entry requirements for applicants from your country, please refer to the international pages of the NUA website. If your award is not listed, please contact the International Ofce who will be happy to advise you. International students are welcome to submit applications up to three weeks in advance of the start of term. However, it is crucial that applicants leave enough time to successfully apply for and receive permission to study in the UK. For Year One entry to all of our undergraduate courses we require an average score of IELTS 6.0 or above with at least 5.5 in each component (academic modules or equivalent examinations are accepted). For the International Foundation Course NUA requires an IELTS

NUA is a Highly Trusted Sponsor under the UK points-based system. These English language requirements are required by the UK Visa and Immigration Service and are strictly adhered to. Students who are citizens of all non-EU/ EEA countries will need to apply for a Student (Adult) Visa under Tier 4 of the points-based system. Interviews Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview (if your application is received by the UCAS deadline). This is an invaluable opportunity for you to meet course staff and for us to meet you. The interview and portfolio is the major factor in determining the success of your submission. The interview gives us a chance to assess your work and your suitability for the course. You will get a chance to tour our campus and ask questions of staff and current students. Preparing your portfolio You will be expected to bring a portfolio of your creative work with you when you come for interview. It is important that you spend time creating a well presented and thought-out portfolio. For detailed advice on preparing a portfolio we recommend you come to one of our Open Days where you will be able to attend a Portfolio Preparation talk and see examples of portfolios from a range of courses. Key points to keep in mind Your portfolio should be presented in a logical and ordered manner It is important to include a range of work and highlight particular interests that demonstrate your suitability for the course you have applied for The interview panel will be equally interested in seeing sketchbooks and notebooks as well as nished work It is best to photograph large pieces of work Film, video and animation work should be no more than ve minutes long You should include examples of your written work. Some courses specically require evidence of essays or similar assignments You may decide to present your portfolio digitally but please notify us in advance of your interview.

Key points regarding student nance You do not need to pay tuition fees upfront. You begin to pay back your tuition fee loan after you have left university and when you start to earn more than 21,000 a year. You do not pay anything if you are earning under 21,000 (although interest still accrues) The loan (including interest) repayments are written off after 30 years There is no debt collection the loan (including interest) is collected with income tax

Student Support Student Support is here to help with all educational, practical, personal and nancial matters should you need it. There is also an external counselling service which all students have access to. Many students are living away from home for the rst time and knowing that friendly advice is always available helps to ensure you can get the most out of your university experience.

You can also attend the essential Portfolio Preparation talk, which will guide you in putting together your portfolio and give you some tips on preparing for interview. We encourage all potential students to attend an Open Day prior to making an application. We are more than happy for you to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or friend. Where we are Norwich has a 1hr 50 minute direct train service from London Liverpool St. There are also direct trains to Cambridge, Peterborough, Shefeld, Manchester and Liverpool. Norwich is approximately 100 miles from London by road.

Norwich International Airport is two miles from the city and offers daily direct ights to Amsterdam connecting Norwich to thousands of destinations worldwide.
