Professional Development Plan

PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION: I communicate with professional peers locally during the following: - I present Professional Development to the staff at my school. This year I have presented Literacy trainings on: Administering Running Records, Analyzing Running Records, Guided Reading Training, and Administering the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). - I serve on the Literacy Committee at my school and communicate with my professional peers in person and through e-mail by sharing best practices in Literacy. I meet monthly with other Literacy Committee members to plan school Literacy Nights for our families. I then communicate regularly with all staff members through e-mail about our Literacy events such as Book Swap, Project Read, and Literacy Nights (Author Mark Wayne Adams, Spooky Story Night, and Goal for the Goald) hosted by the school. - I am also a Team Leader and attend monthly Team Leader meetings. I report back to my team and communicate important information learned from these meetings such as new policies and school happenings. - I communicate with my professional peers in my county (Shelby) and neighboring county (Oldham) during monthly Literacy Trainings and Professional Development sessions on Reading Recovery and the Comprehensive Intervention Model. We watch each other teach live lessons through a 1 way mirror, partake in book studies, and receive training in Literacy best practices from our Teacher Leader. - I also communicate with professional peers locally through Edmodo and Google Docs. Through Edmodo, I share how I use technology in my school and share information learned about technology practices through research I conduct. In turn, I learn new and innovative technology ideas that my peers post on Edmodo. Using Google Docs I share work I have completed with my peers and receive feedback for improvements. Likewise, I review their work and provide feedback as well. Click here to view two different PowerPoint Presentations used during Professional Development sessions. I shared the following evaluation/portfolio tool with peers to help enhance student learning: I have shared with my peers how to use the evaluation tool Turning Point Student Response System. A Student Response System is a way to poll or question a live audience using clicker devices. Teachers create multiple choice or true/false questions and students answer them in real time. When using Turning Point during my Technology Unit, I discovered that not many teachers were using the program. Although, we have this great technological resource at our hands, training has not been provided on how to effectively use it with students. As a result, teachers were not using it. I did an informal and basic training with my team on the benefits of using Turning Point in the classroom, how to create a quiz using Turning Point, and how to create a participant list and monitor student results. Teachers that attended were very responsive to the training and enthusiastic about trying it in their classroom. I shared the following multi-media tool with peers to help enhance student learning: I have shared the mutli-media tool Prezi with my colleagues to enhance student learning. Prezi is a tool that brings presentations to life. It allows you to easily incorporate text, images, audio, and video resources all into one place. Students love the animation it uses. One of the features of Prezi that I really enjoy is the ability to choose a pre-made template or format that allows you to show your audience the big idea of your presentation. When using Prezi, students can see how the information you are presenting combines into a total theme or idea. I conducted my Technology PD on Quizlet and used Prezi as my delivery tool. A few teachers approached me regarding how to use Prezi. I shared with them some of the basics and also showed them another Prezi I made in another technology class on Seed Dispersal. You can see that Prezi here: http://readingrockswithmrsking.weebly.com/pd-plan.html I shared the following school management tool with peers to help enhance student learning: I am a member of the Mastery Connect network and have shared my knowledge of this tool with my professional peers. Mastery Connect allows you to upload assessments or find assessments other educators across the nation have created that are aligned with Common Core Standards. Grading is

made simple as the teacher can use a webcam to score multiple choice questions. Mastery Connect will then show you whole class and individual results, including which students have mastered standards, which students are close to mastery, and which students need remediation. Below is a screenshot of my Mastery Connect account:

I communicate with professional peers in other countries by: - Pinterest is an awesome website for finding teaching resources, including new ideas for using technology in the classroom. One of my Pinterest boards is dedicated to innovative ways of integrating technology in my teaching. Through Pinterest I share technology resources that I use and also gain new ideas from other Pinners, including those in other countries. I shared the following evaluation/portfolio tool with a professional peer from another country to help enhance student learning: Using Pinterest, I shared Poll Everywhere, an instant feedback system, as an evaluation tool to assess student learning. Poll Everywhere allows you to ask multiple choice or open-ended questions to a class of students to assess their understanding of content. Students use any mobile device or webpage to submit their answers. Results are in real time. It is free for K-12 teachers for up to 40 audience members.

I shared the following multi-media tool with a professional peer from another country to help enhance student learning: Using Pinterest, I shared the multi-media tool Popplet. Popplet serves as an interactive mind map or bulletin board for students. Popplet allows students to organize and explore ideas in a visual way while showing relationships between ideas or content. Students can link text, images, and videos around a central topic. Students can work independently or in groups using Popplet. In order to use Popplet, students need access to an ipad or the web.

I shared the following school management tool with a professional peer from another country to help enhance student learning: I shared Weebly as a school management tool on Pinterest. Weebly allows educators to create a high quality website for FREE! Weebly is a drag and drop website builder. You simply choose

a theme, add the pages you need, and drag and drop various elements onto the pages. You click the elements to add your own content and when youre finished, you simply publish your work.

Below is just a sample of ideas that I was able to get from professional peers in other countries. I follow educators around the world using Pinterest and get many ideas from them. This idea came from from Andrea Kontra Aiton from Ontario. This pin explains how to keep students working in a particular app. My school in the past couple of months, received 2 carts of i-pads. As teachers learn how to effectively use i-pads in the classroom, I thought this would be a good tip to share.

This is just another idea, from many that I have, from a professional peer in another country. This is one is from Maree Windle of Australia and shows the 10 great reading apps for the elementary classroom.

I also used Edmodo Learning Communities to get ideas from my professional peers around the world. Unfortunately, I could only give a reaction or share the information that I learned from others (as seen in the screenshot). I could not comment on it without posting rights, nor could I add my own posts. I found this information on editing videos. I was looking for ways to edit videos for my technology unit.

I also learned from others around the world by reading their comments to how they keep their students engaged using technology.

Although I follow groups, such as Professional Development, I am unable to post or respond to post until I have received rights.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS: I communicate with parents about technology that I use in class by: Shelby County Public Schools uses Infinite Campus to house student information, record grades, and communicate with parents. Infinite Campus has an email messenger that allows teachers to send out group e-mails or individual e-mails. Teachers simply choose a class (if they teach more than one), choose the recipients or all, type their subject and message, and upload any files necessary. The teacher can then change the delivery date and time if an e-mail needs to be sent at a later date or time. The teacher can then preview and send the message. Its easy and effective in communicating with parents electronically. Below is a screenshot of a group e-mail I sent to students parents regarding the use of MobyMax, a K-8 Reading and Math website we use to support Common Core Standards.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The following details my PD plan: My schools focus this year is on improving students vocabulary. I decided to do my Professional Development Plan on Quizlet to provide teachers with a technology resource that matches our focus. I held the Professional Development session after school, in the computer lab. I used Prezi as the presentation format. Within Prezi, I included information on many different uses for Quizlet in the classroom, how it meets the diverse needs of learners, links to many different resources including a tutorial I made and posted on Youtube, and teacher and student benefits. I gave a brief introduction to Quizlet and then teachers moved through the Prezi at their own pace. Afterwards, I spoke to teachers about social, ethical, and legal issues and responsible use of technology as well copyright laws when using Quizlet with their students. I was also available to answer any questions that they had. Click below to view my Quizlet Professional Development: http://readingrockswithmrsking.weebly.com/pd-plan.html I incorporated the following concepts in my PD: - The importance for teaching social, ethical, and legal issues and responsible use of technology at the school/classroom level. At the conclusion of the Professional

Development I reminded teachers that one way to use Quizlet in the classroom is to have students creating cards together in groups over a particular topic or unit. If teachers decided to have their students do this, they would need to teach their students about responsible use of technology prior to having students use the website. Also, because Painted Stone is an elementary school, all of the students we serve are under the age of 13. Quizlet takes many safety measures for young users, such as restricting Facebook, Twitter, adding Friends, and there are no chat or profile images. In my Professional Development I included a video about how to securely set up accounts for students who are under the age of 13. Information about summarizing copyright laws related to use of images, music, video, and other digital resources in varying formats. I also spoke about copyright laws at the end of the Professional Development regarding the use of images with Quizlet. If you purchase Quizlet Plus or Quizlet Teacher, you can upload your own images. I shared with the staff how to safely and legally acquire images through Google by clicking on Search Tools and then Labeled for Reuse. I emphasized importance of not using work created by others without permission. Adult learning theory: I used information I learned about Adult Learning Theory in my Professional Development. Through my research I learned that adults prefer a selfdirected or learner centered environment rather than a teacher directed environment. I provided lots of information on Quizlet through Prezi, but allowed Teachers to explore and learn at their own pace. I was there to assist them and answer any questions that they had, but they were responsible for initiating their own learning. I also learned from my research that adults want to know what theyre learning is relevant to their current lives. I explained to teachers how Quizlet could assist us in improving students vocabularies, which is our big goal this year. By connecting the Professional Development to work that we are all trying to accomplish, it was my hope that teachers would be able to put their learning in context.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BEYOND THE SCHOOL LEVEL: I am a member of a Literacy group that meets monthly to learn from one another through observing live lessons, participating in book discussions, and learning from more expert Reading Teacher Leaders. The members of the group are Reading Recovery and Comprehensive Intervention Model teachers across Shelby and Oldham Counties. I had the opportunity to present to these teachers a Running Records app for the i-pad. Running Records, developed by Marie M. Clay, is a method for observing and assessing a childs oral reading. In our classrooms, we take numerous Running Records of students reading daily, but it is through the use of pencil and paper. For my Professional Development beyond the school level, I presented at a monthly meeting on how to use the Running Records app. The app is free and is by Clemson University. The app has many features that make taking Running Records easier and less time consuming, but doing so electronically will take some time getting used to. Click below to see the handout I provided teachers: http://readingrockswithmrsking.weebly.com/pd-plan.html

For my 2nd Professional Development beyond the school level, I wrote a letter to my districts superintendent asking him to consider the district funding a certified Technology Resource Teacher in each of Shelby Countys schools. This year our district has formed a Strategic Leadership Team to create a plan or vision for the next five years for Shelby County Public Schools. The team has conducted research, visited other schools, and listened to what kids, parents, and other teacher want for students in the next five years. Their work has led to a new vision, mission and five strand framework for our schools including a heavy emphasis on the need to embrace the digital age.
