Lesson Title: Lesson Plan 1: Introducing Countable and Uncountable Nouns Grade Level: Early Intermediate Time Allotted for the Lesson: 53 min Short Description of Lesson (50 words or less): This is a small multi-language group of young adult learners. (12 students) They are part of an English language class that meets at First Baptist Church on Saturday mornings and two nights a week. This lesson introduces countable and uncountable nouns, the articles that go with them, and some quantifiers used with them. Classroom Layout and Grouping of Students: The learners meet in a Sunday school classroom. There is white board and media equipment. Chairs are arranged in a circle and can easily be moved for group activity. There are also tables that can be used for written work. This is the Monday evening class. A cookout and Scavenger Hunt are on the agenda after the Saturday class. (see Lesson 3, Extended Activity) How will students be grouped? Activities move between whole class, pairs and group work State Standards met in this lesson (see http://www.state.tn.us/education/ci/esl/doc/ELL_Standards.pdf): not applicable Materials, Resources and Technology (needed for teaching lesson): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Digital Media Equipment (on site) Cloth Grocery Bags Ziploc Bag of Lemon drops Ziploc Bag of Sugar Scavenger Hunt Blank Handout

Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to categorize countable and uncountable nouns. Since the vocabulary in the activities is student created, they know most of the nouns already. Unknown vocabulary will be addressed as needed. Instructional Procedures: 1. Lesson Set The class has already learned the articles, a/an/the. They know how to form plurals with s and es. This introductory lesson on countable and uncountable nouns will expand their ability to use these grammar skills. The primary motivation will be the extended activity. The students have already been told about the Scavenger Hunt and are excited. They are eager to participate and prepare for the event. We will begin by brainstorming to create several lists for our hunt. By creating these lists themselves the students will be working with known vocabulary. This will help them focus on the new grammar in the lesson.

2. Techniques and Activities:. Indicate anticipated time needed for each activity.) A. 5 min/Warm Up Question: Have you ever been on a Scavenger Hunt before? (Share) B. 10 min/Brainstorm ideas for a list of items to use for the Scavenger Hunt. Show them the cloth grocery bags and remind students the items must be small enough to fit in the bags. Write the items they suggest on the board. C. 10 min/Pairs Activity: Each pair will create a 10 item list. This will generate 6 lists for the teams of two that the student will be divided into at the Scavenger hunt. D. 3 min/Media Introduction and Realia: http://linguaspectrum.com/do_the_ddoe.php?id=40 From Early Daily Doses of English, select lesson entitled Countable Uncountable Use baggie of sugar and bag of lemon drops to illustrate. Count the lemon drops/can not count the sugar. Offer students a lemon drop (models language use of article, and can also be used to model quantifiers used in Lesson 2) E. 10/min Categorize: Using the brainstorm words on the board, lead the students into categorizing some of these as Countable or Uncountable. Label the words C or U.

3. Lesson Closure: 15 min/Group Activity Divide into groups of 3. Each group will have 2 of the student created Scavenger lists. Have them categorize the list into Countable or Uncountable nouns. They will place a C or a U in the square provided. Exchange the lists with another group. Do you agree or disagree with how they categorized? (Teacher moves between groups and asks leading questions to help students decide, if they are unsure how to categorize a word.) Before dismissing class, the teacher informs students that tomorrow they will be learning how to make sentences and questions with countable and uncountable nouns. Assessment of student learning (based on objectives): Informally, through observation of group activities and by checking categorization of the Scavenger Hunt list. Extensions, if any: http://linguaspectrumplus.com/free_stuff_level.php?id=40&level=2 Students are encouraged to do the interactive activity available online that corresponds to the Countable Uncountable lesson that was viewed in class today. If they do not have a computer at home, they may use the library. They should write down any words they had difficulty categorizing so that we can discuss them in class.
