Some frequently asked questions

What status are the results on CIE Direct - provisional or final? When we first issue results they are 'provisional' and students receive statement of results. We issue certificates up to eight weeks after statements of results. Certificates confirm results as final. This is to allow time for us to resolve any enquiries about results. We will not downgrade as a consequence of a result enquiry, therefore a candidates final grade cannot be lower than their provisional grade. The status of the results in CIE Direct is dependent on when you view them. So if we have not issued certificates they will be provisional and as soon as we issue certificates they will convert to final. We issue certificates as follows: June series: mid-October November series: mid-March What should I do if the results I have for a student do not correspond with the results on CIE Direct? If you check the results on CIE Direct and the results do not match the statement of results or certificate you have for the student, contact our Customer Services team as soon as possible and advise the student to contact the Centre where they took the examination(s). Can I download students' results from CIE Direct? No. You can only view them. Why do Cambridge International AS Level results look different to Cambridge International A Level results? So they can be clearly distinguished we report Cambridge International AS Level results in lower case, for example, a, b, and c and Cambridge A Level results in upper case, for example A, B and C. You may also notice after the result there is either (AL) or (ASL). The AL stands for A Level and the ASL for AS Level. What is the numerical mark in brackets after the grade? This is called a Percentage Uniform Mark. It is an indicator of the learners performance on the syllabus and is worked out from their syllabus grade. It indicates how well they did within that grade. For example, a Grade B would be translated into a percentage uniform mark of 79, 78, 77, 76, 75, 74, 73, 72, 71 or 70 depending on how good a Grade B they got. The list below details the minimum percentage uniform mark for each grade. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade A* receives a PUM of 90. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade A receives a PUM of 80. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade B receives a PUM of 70. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade C receives a PUM of 60. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade D receives a PUM of 50. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade E receives a PUM of 40. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade F receives a PUM of 30. A learner who obtains the minimum mark needed for Grade G receives a PUM of 20

Why do some candidates not have the numerical mark in brackets after the grade? There are some countries where we have been asked not to issue percentage uniform marks and therefore this information does not appear after the grade.

Why are certain candidates results not available on CIE Direct? Candidates results for a few countries cannot be published on CIE Direct. Cambridge International Examinations is not authorised to do so using CIE Direct.
