WORLD HARMONY RENAISSANCE IN 21th CENTURY
Excerpt from Jan 2007 speech by Hon. John Prescott, Deputy Prime Minister and First
Secretary of State, United Kingdom:
There's been a great deal of talk about harmony in recent times. In fact, the academic, Francis Fung, has argued in his recent paper
"Chinese Harmony Culture: Old and New - Promise for a Less Confrontational World" that China is witnessing a harmony
renaissance. He claims that great debates are happening today in China over whether Socialism with Chinese characteristics can be
Socialism with harmony. And Fung maintains that China's harmony socialism will provide an alternative model, as the leading system
of governance in the 21st Century.

The need of harmony as universal human value for order and stability
came to being in China approximately 3000 years ago through the
Spring and Autumn and Warring States period. It climaxed in Lao Zi’s
Dao De Jing approximately 2500 years ago. The continuity of the 5000
years of Chinese history in part was due to Lao Zi and his follower’s
harmony teaching. In his Dao De Jing, Lao Zi believed that the universe
was created from the dark energy of the infinite firmament. He
attributed harmony as the underlying operating principle of the
universe. The order of the universe is harmony that is why it existed
eternally. The order of nature is also the order of the universe thus
nature’s order is also to seek harmony.
Harmony belief has been in the background in China and the world for
too long. For the last two Western dominated centuries religion and
democracy were in center stage. It is a good sign that China beginning
in 2004, rediscovered harmony when the strong need was felt by her
leaders. At the same time the need for world harmony through its
renaissance is acute in today’s conflicting world, burdened with undue
extremism and unilateralism. Harmony is a universal common value
and renaissance is action. Together harmony comes to life. At the end
of this essay is a draft world harmony preamble and declaration to call
for world support and consensus. This call for harmony renaissance is
the inevitable tide of reinvention by necessity. In rediscovering
harmony, China also rediscovers its own roots. No nation can stand up
unless it can grow on its own roots.
There have been numerous essays by the present author and others
written on the need for harmony renaissance. The author’s experience
in West to East technology transfer highlights the importance of East
and West exchange, with particular significance in harmony
renaissance. To illustrate the importance of a multilateral world and the
future tide, we now venture to disclose the benefits of multilateral
cultural exchange. America is very proud of its creativity and American
knowhow. It is true that America, as a new nation has been very
successful in technology commercialization. The rapid growth of
commercial airliners, space ships, computers and the worldwide web,
all great modern technologies, owe a great deal to America’s
entrepreneur spirit and creativity. Actually in the thousands of years of
accumulated human wisdom and experience there is little new useful
discovery today but more of applications of ancient trial and proven
5
technologies to the modern setting.
With the advent of the most modern nano construction materials, time
has come to build appropriate power turbine towers for rural and
isolated regional electricity generation by utilizing solar energy, waste
heat, biogas and geothermal energy. This low cost power generation
technology using locally available fuel and energy is economically
feasible because of the new MPC cement with high fly ash content. It is
light weight, high strength, high temperature resistant at the same
time easy to form and process. Its short setting time and strong
bounding properties allows onsite construction with ease. The present
vertical power turbine design can also easily team up with available
VAT wind turbine technology for electricity generation. When applied in
large scale this type of design, can be widely used to rapidly electrify
the developing world for modern conveniences such as lights, radios,
computers, microwave ovens and other small appliances. This
reinvention of the power turbine for green electricity generation has a
long human heritage that further illustrates the essential spirit of East
and West cultural exchange.
The vertical simple power turbine in the form of a rotating lantern was
first observed as early as two thousand years ago at the period of
Three Kingdoms in China. Legend has it that it was invented by the
famous military strategist and prime minister of Han Kingdom. Hence it
was called Kung Ming lantern in honor of him. The idea of the Kung
Ming lantern has a lit candle at the bottom and a turbine on top. The
convection current driven by the buoyancy of the heated air turns the
inner lantern that casts rotating human shadows on the wall. The
military value of the lantern was said to deceive the enemy. The idea of
the air driven power turbine resurfaced immediately after Second
World War when Rolls Royce perfected the gas turbine engine for jet
aircrafts. The design was made possible by the high strength and heat
resistant properties of the titanium alloy power turbine. This heralded
the jet airplane and the subsequent continental jet air travel. U.S.
6
manufacturers Pratt and Whitney and General Electric again were
quick to follow Rolls Royce in commercialization. Just as after the first
Russian Sputnik, America was quick to commercialize the space and
satellite communication age.
HARMONY PREAMBLE

Harmony is the order of natural science and the fundamental law of
the universe.
The invisible energy that created the universe can also be called DAO.
Lao Zi said "Dao created one, one created two, two created three,
three created all things. All things carry Ying and embrace Yang.
Dynamic balance creates harmony."

CHINA’S GRAND STRATEGY EVOLVING WITH
CONCEPT OF SCEINTIFIC DEVELOPMENT
Under the impact of Western science and civilization, China for more than two hundred
years was searching for a development direction of her own, which would not entail
giving up her tradition and identity. The period of search began at the end of Qing
dynasty, when China suffered humiliations one after the other under the reigning colonial
powers of the time. This continuing process of development struggle lasted through
foreign domination, invasions and domestic upheavals until the end of the twentieth
century. China’s history of trial and tribulations during this time period is well
documented in literature. From it, the Chinese nation collectively paid dearly and learned
the hard lessons necessary to move forward like all great national revivals of the past.
Human civilization as a whole cannot afford to neglect the over 5000 years of valuable
Chinese culture and tradition. That will be most regrettable.
China is moving into the 21st Century with impressive economic development
unprecedented in human history for such a large nation which began with the reform and
open up policy initiated by the late Deng Xiaoping. It occurred during the last 30 years of
relative peace and stability after the end of the cold war era. It is understandable that the
nation of China as a whole looked back at the involuntary isolation of the cold war era
with a great deal of misgiving. For all nations to progress with the world it must be given
the level field to interact with the outside. For great powers to exercise its naval power to
contain other nation’s development is inhumane.
The essence of ancient Chinese culture is reverence of the “Great Way” (Dao) as taught
by Lao Zi, and pursuit of Harmony with humility as a belief system handed down by
Confucius and her other sages. Simply put, Chinese culture reveres the Great Way and
9
has strong affinity for harmony. This affinity is reflected with prominence in the Chinese
ceremonial way of life, landscaping, building design, Fengshui practices and moral codes
and values. Dao is the highest order of belief and is the origin of the universe. It is
nature’s order and is the unification of the scientific spirit and human spirit. It is the soul
and roots of Chinese culture. A culture can never deny its own heritage. A culture which
looses its own roots is devoid of its own soul.
The ultimate goal of practicing Dao is to reach inner peace and live in harmony with the
universe (Tian Ren He Yi). This includes harmony with nature, harmony within the
family, the society, the country and harmony among nations. To reach broad harmony,
Dao must lead us to harmony through trust, justice, equity, forgiveness, tolerance and
humility. Human development so far has been dominated by “Survival Aggression” with
the strong overwhelming the weak, the worst examples were military conquests,
colonialism and forcing one’s development model on others by force. China as a
traditional agriculture, as opposed to a predominantly nomadic society, has been an
exceptionally peaceful major nation that did not have a history of foreign conquest.
Because of the last two hundred years of domination and humiliation by foreign
imperialistic nations China today has a strong distaste to the practice of “Survival
Aggression”. That is why China today is advocating harmony society and world harmony
through harmony renaissance (see “China’s Harmony Renaissance- What the World Must
Know” by the author).
Today the inevitable tide of harmony with nature is also beginning to catch on. The world
consensus of harmony with nature will lead to the recognition of the need for harmony
among nations also. Mutual development, win-win development will gradually replace
the past blind zero sum mentality of world development. World harmony renaissance will
release humans from the bondage of destructive- survival confrontations. It will release
our collective creative energy for constructive mutual development. Human history has
gone through two major phases of development. Approximately two thousand years ago,
the world saw a burst of philosophical ideas spreading through the world for universal
love and order. Five hundred years or so ago, the age of enlightenment and European
Renaissance gave us democracy and today’s modern science. Harmony Renaissance is
the third phase of development that will yield a level playing field for all nations to enjoy
the fruits of common human innovation. Our collective accomplishments will far surpass
the achievements of European Renaissance (see “World harmony Renaissance- Promise
for a Better World” by the author).
Having achieved relative economic success during the last 30 years of reform and
opening up the new China of today is faced with the dilemmas of uneven development,
reconciliation of the old and new caused by breakneck speed of change. The new China
of 58 years is going through unprecedented upheavals relative to its entire recorded
history of over 5000 years. As a matter of fact the tumult caused by unprecedented rapid
change experienced by China today, also has no parallel in human history of any major
nation. At times, China overwhelmed by the impact of Western culture, appeared to be
lost.
So for China, its grand strategy for development must be “socialism with Chinese
characteristics” as wisely announced by the consensus conclusion reached by the 17 CPC
National Congress that just ended October 21st, 2007. According to the headlines,
China’s grand strategy will evolve from the concept of scientific development with the
objective of building a relatively prosperous, just, and harmonious society for all. And the
grand strategy incorporating the objective of harmony will be the result of a
comprehensive master plan of executable engineering system analysis, comprising the
following critical pieces. The order of importance of each element in the following
outline is not fixed, but will sure be subject to the dynamic evolvement of a complex and
fluid society in its development. But the harmony spirit of the great Dao of discovering
the new and old must remain intact as put forth by the author in the following summary:

WILL U.S. DEMOCRACY AND CHINESE HARMONY BE
HARMONIOUS IN 21st CENTURY?
BY FRANCIS C. W. FUNG, PH.D.
In Governor Romney’s article, we are presented with the powerful thesis of “Rising to a
New Generation of Global Challenges” when we in reality have no powerful opponents
beyond our own fear. Again, he invokes the glory of winning the Cold War through
democracy diplomacy. According to Romney “In the aftermath of World War II and with
coming of the Cold War”, members of “the Greatest Generation” united America and the
free world around shared values and actions that changed history. Romney believes that
“our current generation can match the courage, dedication, and vision of the greatest
generation”. In conclusion he states unequivocally that “We are a unique nation, and there
is no substitute for our leadership”.
It is a natural tendency among great nations, in times of trouble, to search the annals of
their own history to influence current policies. If the U.S.A. is to reestablish hostile
relations with powerful nations, this will serve only to bolster anti-American forces
around the world and galvanize regimes whose fundamental premise relies on America
pursuing this course of action. It is time for America to see that it is Harmony that lies at
the foundation of all new world leadership today. It is Harmony that will bring America
back in line with major forces around the world.
13
Mayor Giuliani in “Toward a Realistic Peace” outlined a policy of defending civilization
and defeating terrorists by making the international system work. According to the article
“the next U.S. president will face three key foreign policy challenges. First and foremost,
will be to set a course for victory in the terrorists’ war on global order. The second will be
to strengthen the international system that the terrorists seek to destroy. The third will be
to extend the benefits of the international system in an ever widening arc of security and
stability across the globe. The most effective means for achieving these goals are building
a stronger defense, developing a determined diplomacy, and expanding our economic and
cultural influence... To this end, the Voice of America program must be significantly
strengthened and broadened. Its surrogate stations, such as Radio Free Europe and Radio
Liberty, which were so effective at inspiring grass-roots dissidents during the Cold War,
must be expanded as well”.
In “Reengaging with the World-A Return to Moral Leadership” Senator Edwards asserted
“the United States today needs to reclaim the moral high ground that defined our foreign
policy for much of the last Century”. Little are most Americans aware, because of our
own closed mindedness, the world is not waiting for us to return to our past moral high
ground. The world of the 21st Century is moving towards a higher common value of
harmony renaissance. World harmony will propagate through resonance with just
commerce and win-win mutual development. There will be no need for sponsorship from
the great power of democracy as in the Cold War era. While, according to Senator
Edwards “we must lead the world by demonstrating the power of our ideals, not by
stoking fear about those who do not share them”. Senator Edwards is dead right to point
out the failure of the Bush democracy diplomacy in Iraq but he fails to acknowledge the
necessity of perceiving new ideals prevalent throughout the world as the standard to
which our policies and bias must adapt.
President Bush has promoted Democracy as the cornerstone of his foreign policy. This is
amply addressed in his second inaugural speech and the 2006 National Security Strategy.
Failing to prove the presence of Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction he went on to justify
the occupation as a victory for democracy. In doing so Bush committed a double jeopardy
that further discredited him in front of the world. In reality, democracy is nowhere near
being established, let alone secured in Iraq or the Middle East.
But the failure of Bush’s Middle East democracy diplomacy does not obscure the
successful propagation of democracy in the last century. In fact, 20th century democracy
has seen great success as the preferred means of popular sovereignty governance, but not
as a monolithic structure without variation. It is the variety with which democracy is
developed and carried out that has infinitely deepened the appeal to developing nations.
The fact that varied forms of democracy can co-exist peacefully draws nations and people
in without stirring thoughts of Imperialism. This generic definition of democracy allows
the majority of newly independent countries of the world can claim their own brand of
democracy, which is different from the U.S. system.
In a recent Foreign Affairs article titled “Democracy without America: The Spontaneous
Spread of Freedom” Michael Mandelbaum, of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies, elucidated clearly that the “time for creating the social conditions
14
conducive to liberty is, at a minimum, a generation. Not only the apparatus of liberty take
time to develop, it must be developed independently and domestically; it cannot be sent
from elsewhere and implanted, ready made.” — “The age of empire has ended. Nowhere
are people eager, or even willing, to be ruled by foreigners, a point the U.S. encounter
with Iraq has illustrated all too vividly.” This line of contemporary thinking advocating
the spread of common ideals as well as democracy is well documented in foreign affairs
studies and is also routinely presented by the present author.
Twenty years ago the present author organized world peace painting exhibitions in Hong
Kong and Taiwan out of personal interest. In the process, we discovered two common
truisms about values that are very much applicable to the 21st Century. Trustworthiness
and win-win commerce are essential for world peace. Encouraged by this simple
discovery, our banner calligraphy for our exhibition exclaimed “The Grand Era of Peace
and Harmony will Surely Come.” According to Mandelbaum, “The institutions, skills,
and values needed to operate a free market economy are those that, in the political sphere,
constitute democracy.” — “Perhaps most important, the free market generates the
organizations and groups independent of the government — businesses, trade unions,
professional associations, clubs, and the like—that are known collectively as civil society,
which is itself indispensable to a democratic political system.”
History has also shown that the ideal of freedom and popular sovereignty is best spread
by commerce when the necessary rise in each nation’s education and living standards
make conditions ready. It must take hold internally in the fertile ground of the gradually
maturing civil society.
The system of government that will inevitably be most suited to a country is that which is
harmonious with its own specific cultural, historical and other varied idiosyncrasies that
no imported system can possibly incorporate. The Chinese term for harmony is composed
of “Freedom of Speech and Contentment to All” demonstrating the wisdom inherent in
the Chinese language handed down from generation to generation.
The current use of military force and “power diplomacy” to promote U.S. values is
backfiring. The Iraq occupation debacle makes the developing world suspicious of
American motives, a fact nobody can deny. Senior statesmen purport to be blind to this
growing sentiment in order to entrench a standard of complacency already well
established throughout the population. American diplomatic relations with the majority of
the world today are at their lowest in the last 50 years. The revival of bygone Cold War
propaganda is bound to fail as it is out of touch with the needs of most of the developing
world for growth.
15
The ideology of democracy is well understood and considered necessary to the modern
world, but the concept is insufficient if it is not imbued with the notion of harmony.
Harmony Renaissance is the next phase of a human breakthrough that will unleash
creativity beyond that which even the European Renaissance bore out. Religious strife,
unilateral confrontation and egocentric philosophies will dissipate as the trend towards
harmony becomes more influential and the innumerable possibilities of this potentiality
are brought to bare.
In my book “China’s Harmony Renaissance: What the World Must Know” I detailed the
thesis that the three main pillars of human civilization since ancient times are Middle
Eastern religions, European democracy and Chinese harmony. Their spread has the most
profound influence on human culture and will continue until time immemorial. In
previous essays entitled “Harmony Propagates by Resonance”, “Universal Wave Theory
and Harmony Consensus”, and “Harmony Universal World Common Heritage” I
proposed that harmony propagates by resonance without the need of states unduly
brandishing their soft power.
History has shown religion and democracy were regularly promoted by institutions and
state sponsorships. Therein lies the dilemma of past religion and democracy extremism.
Both religion and democracy will need harmony to soften their harshness and extremism
that have been wrought by institutions and state sponsorship. Countless wars have been
fought over religion and democracy in the past and continue today. As demonstrated by
history, harmony can propagate in its most effective manner with little interference
eventually becoming a common universal value.
Inherent in harmony is its renunciation of violence. History has no record of wars over
harmony. The development of mutually beneficial trade has evinced the unlikelihood of
war as an outcome from harmony propagation. Espousing tolerance, acceptance, mutual
respect, equity, humility and forgiveness as values for universal conflict resolution,
harmony will be the ultimate solution bringing lasting peace and unity to the unyielding
diversity of human cultures.
In the 21st Century, harmony will propagate through resonance with the spread of
commerce and mutual development like waves on the surface of the water. Democracy
will be further carried by the wave of harmony like fish in water. For democracy to take
hold in any nation a civil society with integrated market economy is a prerequisite.
Without the necessary societal order and harmony consensus, democracy will wither. A
return to global cultural values of tolerance, mutual acceptance, respect, equity, humility
16
and forgiveness through Harmony Renaissance will fertilize all national soil for
democracy to grow even in the most obstinate ground.
Unilateralism and arrogance, as practiced primarily by the U.S. today, creates great
obstacles for international democracy. Thus harmony renaissance must pave the ground
for the advancement of international democracy. Brining harmony together with
democracy under one banner striving to attain the common goal of prosperity and peace
for all nations, whether developed or developing is the road to success in the future. May
harmony prevail in the world!

READER'S RESPONSE TO "WILL U.S. DEMOCRACY
AND CHINESE HARMONY BE HARMONIOUS IN 21ST
CENTURY"
BY MORGAN STEACY, YORK UNIVERSITY, ASIAN STUDIES.
Francis Fung has recently turned his sights to the trend in American
thought that is decidedly unaware that people today may think as Lao
Zi did 2500 years ago that any and all death for whatever purpose is
bad. There is a simple equation that has faded into distant
reminiscence that we need to get reacquainted with immediately. It
goes as follows: if A kills B, B is going to want to kill A. This also works
in the other direction. So, what winds up happening is that A kills B and
then B kills A, and then A kills B and B kills A again and finally both B
and A are so tired of fighting that they have forgotten exactly what it
was that began the whole mess in the first place. Their economies
have been destroyed and the people are miserable on both sides. But,
not to worry about all of that because, at least, no one in the world
thinks that they are a weak country. No one will dare say that they did
not stand their ground. No one will claim that they do not stand by
their principles even if it costs them thousands, perhaps hundreds of
thousands of human lives.
18
The only way that the people of the world are going to begin to let go
of some of that feeling of righteous hatred for the U.S.A. is if Americans
stop flaunting their supremacy in the faces of those who desire it. This
means two things to start with. First of all the spirit of harmony in
business must be nurtured so that other countries feel that they have
the respect of the U.S.A. Secondly, and more importantly, American
foreign policy experts must embrace other countries’ rights to develop
their own system of governance as they see fit. No country has the
same history, culture, demographics, geography or political climate as
the U.S.A. No country can make a carbon copy print of American
democracy and set it in motion on their own terrain.
When China was the great superpower of Asia in ancient times, they
were called the Middle Kingdom because their influence made them
the centre of the world as people knew and understood it. New ideas
erupted from China. Artistic endeavour flourished in the fertile grounds
of Chinese thought. China simply had the most advanced thinking in
various arenas and furthermore urged that thought forward. Despite
the fact that they, like America today, had this stronghold, they did not
venture out to impose their views on their neighboring countries. They
were thrilled to provide instruction to envoys that would come from far
off with the desire for new light in thought. But it was up to those who
returned to their home countries to do with that perspective what they
would. It was for them to decide how this could help their country. The
Chinese were not so arrogant to think that because something had
worked for them that it would also work for another country in the
same way.
Since the Cold War ended it has seemed that Might was Right. History
has continually tried to persuade us that, while this option seems
infallible, it is not going to have the lasting effects that those
employing it had originally hoped. It will lead to more and more people
trying to prove that Might is Right and then we have to look back to A
and B again. The level of hostility that we wade through on a day to
day basis must be damaging to our health. This constant fear that
someone is going to explode something somewhere and the next
World War will rear its ugly head with explosive force, destroying all we
had worked for, can only be self-fulfilling unless we act now. The tide of
harmony has begun to gain currency. People around the world are
starting to see the value in trying to empathize with those, who, we are
told are the enemy, because they realize that the problems are not
generally the problems of the people that they affect, but the problems
of those in power. Those with everything enter these frays for their
own personal gain, while the people affected have nothing. Harmony
brings positive qualities to everyone without having to sacrifice human
life. This is not to say that there is no sacrifice in harmony, there is.
19
The sacrifice of not maintaining rigid standards about exactly how
one’s life is carried out on a day-to-day basis, without thinking about
how those actions will impact on each and every person on the planet.
That is the main sacrifice that needs to be made in order for there to
be true harmony. Harmony begins with an all-encompassing global
human awareness. It is in that awareness that there is potential for
people of the world to advance to a new stage of living in the Harmony
Renaissance.

WORLD HARMONY DIPLOMACY VERSUS POWER
DIPLOMACY
By Francis C. W. Fung, PH.D.
Our pride blinded us from seeing the need of dignity by the poor and
disadvantaged. We have become immune to other nation’s needs for
development. Instead from our ethnocentric perspective, we continue
to be critical of other striving nation’s efforts to modernize. This lack of
understanding of other nation’s loss of dignity and desperate need of
modernization did not go without notice by America’s elite,
21
experienced in foreign policy. In fact the extensive survey conducted
by Pew Research Center involving 45,239 people and 46 nations from
April 6 to May 29,2007 found majorities in many countries reject the
main planks of current U.S. foreign policy and express dictates for
American style democracy. According to the polled results, there is a
wide spread perception that the U.S. acts unilaterally in making
international policy decisions. And majorities in most every country
polled, including 97 percent in France, 80 percent in Argentina, and 75
percent in Lebanon, said the United States promoted democracy
mostly where it served U.S. interests. This, according to Pew, helps
explain why U.S. ideas about democracy are rejected by vast numbers
around the globe.
22
“success against our adversaries” instead of dialogue and win-win
mutual development. The presumption that those who disagree are
enemies, will surely not win us friends. In contrast, Harmony Diplomacy
espouses mutual development between any two nations powerful or
weak, developed or developing, rich or poor. As demonstrated by my
article “Harmony Diplomacy in Work” misunderstanding and distrust
between U.S.-China can only be resolved by dialogue through
discussion of commonality. Confrontation and threat will only extend
animosity as exemplified by prolonged U.S. - Cuban and U.S. - Iran
mutual accusations with shouting matches that are becoming
permanent features of U.S. Power Diplomacy.
Despite the claim to the contrary, wisdom and humility have no place
for self glorification. Yet we are told “I believe the American people will
be eager to see America lead again. — It is time for a new generation
to tell the next great American story----this was the time we defeated
global terrorists and brought opportunity to forgotten corners of the
world.” The final conclusion is the crowning moment for Obama. “This
is our moment to renew the trust and faith of our people—and all
people—in an America that battles immediate evils, promotes ultimate
23
good, and leads the world once more.” Humility may be the only single
most effective reflection to restore others lost of dignity due to our
past trespasses.
A harmonious future for Asia and Europe hinges on wisdom that can
steer the course of their interactions. So said delegates at the third
annual Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Interfaith Dialogue, which wrapped
up June 23, 2007 in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu Province. In
the Nanjing Statement, issued at the conclusion of the event,
participants from the two continents vowed to deepen and broaden the
dialogue process to foster a peaceful and harmonious partnership. Cui
Tian Kai, assistant minister of foreign affairs of China said at a joint
news conference with Senator Gianni Vernetti, undersecretary of state
at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Building on the achievements
of the first two meetings, in Bali in 2005 and Cyprus in 2006, the two-
day dialogue co-hosted by China and Italy served as a platform for
religious and political leaders and academics to address their diversity
and commonality in faiths and deliberate on further tapping the
potential of interfaith talks in enhancing mutual understanding in an
era of globalization, he said.
24
A way to avoid conflict has long been sought. A seemingly
uncomplicated approach is for nations to share peace and prosperity
through dialogue and tolerance. The recipe of dialogue entails not
imposing ones values or faith on others. It involves respecting different
peoples' treasured values and beliefs. It is necessary to understand
and appreciate, or at least tolerate, different cultures and religions. The
ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Interfaith Dialogue, under the framework
of the Asia-Europe Summit, is just such a platform. It brings nations
together from two continents to address their diversity and
commonality in faith and culture, with the hope of convergence for the
sake of humanity.

international arena. We should build a harmonious world by following
the policy of a greater neighborhood diplomacy. To the end of a
harmonious world we must maintain friendly ties with as many

SECRETS OF CHINESE WORDS AND SAYINGS:
ANCIENT WISDOM FOR TODAYTHE IMPORTANCE
OF CHINESE LANGUAGE TO MODERN SUCCESS
BY FRANCIS C. W. FUNG, PH.D.
The importance of learning the Chinese language is not limited to the fact that almost one
fourth of the world’s population, in East and South Asia and the rest of the world use it
wholly or partly. Neither is the newly discovered importance of Chinese language in
world commerce and world affairs. Apart from its uniquely beautiful calligraphy the
Chinese language obviously also has inherent world cultural significance. Most of all to
the author, the Chinese nation owes its repute as a nation of wisdom to the innovative
cultural formation of its language. This I will venture to elaborate in this announcement.
Learning the distinctly spatial Chinese words will expand the mental capacity of citizens
of the world who speak native phonetic tongues, increasing their capacities for different
types of intelligence. Added to this is the cultural wisdom embedded in the formation of
the characters, and in the meaning of Chinese sayings. As most of the major languages of
the word are phonetic, a bilingual person who also speaks Chinese will exercise different
parts of his brain in their daily undertakings.
The Chinese nation with its continuous and uninterrupted history of 5000 years stands out
among ancient nations of the world. Its language is early and being non-phonetic is also
unique among world languages. Chinese pictographs or characters were discovered as
early as 3000 years ago and predated oracle bones. The Chinese characters were created
by diverse ingenious and imaginative ways throughout its long history. It is a collective
treasure of wisdom and art by design. Different from the world’s major phonetic
languages, the Chinese language consists of a system of more than 5000 basic characters
instead of a limited number of letters in an alphabet. This larger system of basic
characters at one hand presents a challenge to non native learners at the outset but it also
renders Chinese a language of wisdom as we shall soon realize.
From this creatively crafted system of basic characters, new words, two- word-
“nomenclatures” and four- word- “ Chinese sayings” (CHENG YU) are innovatively
created to suit evolution of times. For example the word commonly meaning patience
(REN) is the character knife edge (REN) held above the character heart (XIN). The world
martial (WU) is formed by the character stop (ZI) and the character weapon (GE). The
word war (ZAN) is composed by two parts (DAN) and (GE) meaning unilateral and
weapon. The term crisis is formed by the two words meaning danger and opportunity
(WEI JI) simultaneously. The term harmony is made up of two words each of two
characters ( HE XIE) together they mean content and consensus. Thus the words
patience, martial, crisis and harmony impart deeper wisdom above mere meaning for the
common use of the words. This continuing development has persisted without major
disruption for 5000 years. A well learned Chinese shows his pedigree by frequent use of
these cultural related nomenclatures and other famous sayings as explained in the
following. Thus the Chinese language incorporates the richness of the Chinese historical
development and culture.
29
There are many modern advantages to the Chinese language. The modern Japanese and
Korean languages evolved from heavy dependence of Chinese words into phonetic
languages during recent history. Because of the usefulness and versatility of the Chinese
characters, today many educated Japanese and Koreans read Chinese characters and still
prefer not to totally divorce from the use of Chinese words. Most of all, the Chinese
language is attractive to those well heeled in the wisdom and cultural content of the
innovative words, nomenclatures and famous sayings mentioned previously. Individual
Chinese characters are monosyllabic, and the four character sayings which embody
Chinese wisdom are as short and as easy to learn and memorize as acronyms in English.
These acronyms like simple wisdom phrases are handed down through generations and
become the cumulative reservoir of Chinese cultural jewels with deep meaning. Two
most well known four word idioms are (Zhi Ji Zhi Bi, Bai Zhan Bai Sheng), together they
mean “know thyself and know thy enemy, hundred battles hundred victories.” This has
come to be one of the utmost important military strategies of all time. Because it is
simple and easy to remember like an eight letter acronym, even Chinese kids know it by
heart.
The other modern advantages of the Chinese language are many. Chinese language is
concise and compact. A similar length book in Chinese will take half the space of a
phonetic language book. Because of its compact pictographs, Chinese writing lends itself
readily for speed reading. As a bilingual person of 50 years and receiving most of my
education in America, I can read Chinese books much faster than English books. This
makes it significantly less of a chore to go through long documents in Chinese than
English.
Chinese verbal commands are more limited in sounds, because the basic system of
characters are finite in number so are Chinese words. English alphabets may be only
twenty six but the sounds of phonetic English words are infinite. Thus the first fully
functional verbal input computer most likely will be Chinese. The first Chinese language
input computer is well advanced is well on its way to commercialization. This will
eliminate the key board input disadvantage of Chinese language computer once and for
all. Although current key board input Chinese language computers are reasonably
efficient, the verbal input Chinese language computer may prove to be even more
efficient and easy to use.
One obvious observation that surfaces is the fact that Chinese nomenclatures in different
30
disciplines are more standardized because the meaning of the common pictographs that
makes the different jargons of the trades. In the English language jargons, it is easy to
deliberately create different new jargons for different trades. By nature of the phonetic
language infinite number of words with different sounds can be created by combination
and permutation of the 26 alphabets. This does not necessarily make cross discipline
studies any easier. Because the Chinese system of basic characters is finite, even when
the Chinese nomenclatures appear to be different in each discipline the pictographs will
give away its intended meaning. The beauty of the Chinese pictograph language system
as opposed to the phonetic system most of the world uses, is its relative simplicity. Once
a Chinese learner knows a relatively small sample of pictographs he is less likely to need
the dictionary when pursuing a new discipline. This significantly lowers the threshold of
cross discipline studies and communications.
This introductory announcement of the secrets of the Chinese words and sayings is an
excerpt of a compilation of the wisdom of ancient Chinese language for modern success.
This new compilation entitled “Secrets of Chinese Words and Sayings: Ancient Wisdom
for Success Today” goes beyond the usual writings on Chinese wisdom for success. The
compilation goes into the secret roots of the Chinese words and language itself beyond
the mere scope of Chinese ancient philosophical and military wisdom in print. We
welcome comments and contributions on Chinese ancient wisdom and the modern
importance of the Chinese language from our interested readers.

Letter to David Wells, Director of KPCB
Dear David,
Since our discussion yesterday I wish to add that our multipurpose VPTG electric
generator has certain salient features that may easily escape a casual observer at first.
With its vertical axis turbine and venturi housing it is an enhanced multipurpose power
turbine generator not unlike a converted power turbine generator from gas turbine jet
engine. This was the technology I transferred from Cooper- Rolls Royce to China during
late 1980's. It can be functional where the conventional wind generator may not. I will
explain further.
Its vertical axis turbine can be multistage to reduce the frontal blade dimension a
conventional wind turbine takes. The turbine is located at the venturi housing neck, thus
the wind velocity is many times increased by the Bernoulli principle. The bottom of the
enlarged housing with entry portholes collect wind from all directions. The vertical
tower design can combine buoyancy effect with the wind energy. Thus as an appropriate
technology for rural and developing areas the wind that is captured in the lower venturi
housing can be further heated by solar power, geothermal or waste at heat the bottom of
the venturi housing.
Of course because of the above many features it can also be a muti-purpose electric
generator when the wind velocity happened to be low or not available because of
seasonal changes. Another words it can work as a waste, solar or geothermal heat electric
generator when there is no wind. Solar collectors can be use to heat the bottom of our
venturi housing do generate additional draft for power. In some remote areas agriculture
waste can be burned in the front burner as shown in my patent design drawings. This way
we have a bonafide low tech power turbine for electricity generation. If cow dung is used
and acceptable in the dessert for a portable device, so be it.
I am including my short summary and the Chinese translation below to illustrate the point
that my enhanced ecology inventions have additional features that may not be obvious by
casual observation. I too am beginning to realize the growing multi-facet features of my
three unique, innovative and versatile green energy electric inventions. Thank you for
your patience and consideration in working with me.
Best Wishes,
Francis

OUR ENHANCED ECOLOGY MINDED RENEWABLE
ENERGY INVENTIONS
To put it in a meaningful way, I can venture to say that my inventions are the cumulative
experience and wisdom of many years and many partners in appropriate renewable
energy development with enhanced environmental considerations.. The fact that the
inventions were submitted for patent applications recently by me only means that the
awareness to harmonize with nature has finally come of age be lately. Our three green
energy inventions include the use of atmospheric, geothermal, hydro, solar, wave, wind
and waste heat energies for electric generation. Our inventions are low cost, easy to
manufacture and suited for rural and developing world applications.
In each case, in the case of VPTG (an all in one venturi 360 degree VAT turbine that can
harness atmospheric, wind, geothermal and waste heat energy), HACG (hydraulic
compressed air power electric generator) and AWEG (an induced wave power electric
generator powered by alternate gravity and buoyancy forces), we minimize the
perturbation of nature compared to conventional way of using renewable energies. The
VPTG VAT turbine is multidimensional compared to uni- direction. The VPTG can
funnel wind from the bottom upwards along the venturi tube to the throat area for
maximum power utilization. My inventions can be readily scaled up or down to suit
community electricity use. We use natural environments without the need to build
elaborate civil structures. In all cases we also minimize the use of precious space. Think
about the implications.
For conventional wave electric generators their size is determined by the length of the
natural wave in each locality. Our AWEG can be scaled up and down independent of the
wave length of the body water. We induce the waves according to our design (note the
word induce). In a close system, using cryogenic fluid as working media, the AWEG
invention is uniquely suitable as a superconducting electric generator. The beauty of
super conducting phenomenon is that large amount of electricity can be generated in
small cylindrical spaces.
For Julia, Lin, and Leon who have heard my inventions presentation many times over,
most likely appreciate the sweeping statement above. For those who have not heard my
presentations often I will be patient. Lin can you render above statement into Chinese that
will convey our noble intent to the Chinese speakers also? Appreciate it.

OUR VPTG WIND ELECTRIC GENERATOR DOES NOT
KILL BIRDS, OUR HACG HYDRO POWER ELECTRIC
GENERATOR DOES NOT DESTROY MARINE BIOLOGY
AND MORE
Dear David,
From the same consideration, our HACG hydro power electric generator
does not destroy marine biology. We use the hydro power indirectly.
The water is just diverted through our HACG device. Only the
isothermally compressed air goes through our air turbines for power
generation or refrigeration. The water that goes through our HACG
device is also oxygenated because part of the air bubbles entrapped
remains in the water. In another word, the tail water coming out of our
HACG electric generator is oxygenated and unheated by the turbine.
Not only marine biology is not destroyed, our tail water is good for
marine life.
Our IWEG induced wave electric generator creates its own wave! There
is no need for any civil engineering construction to interfere with the
body water.
Its vertical axis turbine can be multistage to reduce the frontal blade
dimension a conventional wind turbine takes. The turbine is located at
the venturi housing neck, thus the wind velocity is many times
increased by the Bernoulli principle. The bottom of the enlarged
housing with entry portholes collect wind from all directions The
34
vertical tower design can combine buoyancy effect with the wind
energy. Thus as an appropriate technology for rural and developing
areas the wind that is captured in the lower venturi housing can be
further heated by solar power, geothermal or waste at heat the bottom
of the venturi housing.
Best Wishes,
Francis

CHINA IS A POWER UNSTOPPABLE
Author: FARZAM KAMALABADI 2003-1-20
46
On the threshold of the new century, the steady development of healthy US-China
relations will prove to be a decisive factor in determining the nature of the 21st century
and the eventual emergence and long-term settlement of a positive international order.
On the other hand, the piling up of unwarranted mistrust and unjustified worries
stemming from misunderstandings and ignorance will cause a more turbulent period in
the checkered history of the new world order, posing a yet more perilous menace to the
world community than in previous centuries.
But the solid foundation for nurturing positive US-China relations can only be erected by
a correct understanding of the forces and processes at work which are inevitably bringing
China fully into the world arena for the first time in history.
China has to be seen as the only nation whose citizens rarely came into direct contact
with the outside world during the entire course of its continuous 5,000 years of
civilization prior to the initiation of the reform and opening-up policies. Over 98 percent
of the population had never met the people of the Western nations.
Such a unique continued isolation until recent years, so unnoticed and easily ignored by
the people of the Western world, has implications.
This position, on the one hand, had made China for many years a non-progressive, insular
and introverted society. Its peculiarities and characteristics are not readily understood by
the Western world.
On the other hand, China has developed a unique civilization with a distinct world
outlook, philosophy, mind-set, culture, value system, medical theories and practices and
its own definitions of spirituality. This makes it potentially capable of contributing to the
world society.
China's reform and opening-up policies, instituted gradually over the last two decades,
therefore, need to be put in perspective and understood in the light of the macro world
processes shaping and reshaping the destinies of the whole of humankind.
China's opening up, reform and development can be understood as not instigated and
orchestrated merely by individual, far-sighted leaders.
It is more correct to understand the change as the flowering of the collective soul of
China coinciding with the early stages of the internationalization of the planet, a new
process which has only gathered momentum in the last century.
It is the fulfilling of the sacred destiny of a major contributor of world civilization, as
embodied in the release of long-withheld latent psychological powers, desires, and needs
of the aggregate population of such a nation, but voiced by the far-sighted new leaders of
New China representing and vocalizing such hitherto temporarily checked and unvoiced
cries.
The psychological powers of a once progressive and powerful nation have been stretched
and held in captivity and suspense for a few centuries, and the timing of the quick release
has meant a far reaching and fast moving arrow.
Such a marvelous colossal macro process can only find its parallel in the modern world
history in the events leading to the appearance of the Renaissance in Europe and the
discovery of the North American Continent.
47
If correctly understood as representing massive macro processes shaping and reordering
world structures, then the implications of the recent attempts, albeit laden with challenges
and repeated pitfalls, of the regeneration of China, will be that it is an unstoppable
torrential current which will tear down whatever internal or external forces that, however
unwittingly, may be blocking its path or hoping to contain it.
Once rightfully understood as the release of the massive hidden and latent mental forces
of the population of an entire nation, albeit itself as yet mostly unconscious, in fulfilling
its contributory destiny to the creation of a peaceful New World Order, then it will be
known that no force, internal or external, can check or revert this fast-advancing process.
"The lid is off the top of China, and no one can put it back," says Madam Rabbani, the
late distinguished leader of the Baha'i World Community (statement made in 1989-90).
The phenomenon of the emergence of China into the world community, therefore, should
be welcomed with jubilation.
The Western world must come to terms with such unparalleled world processes, must
rightfully interpret its purport on the threshold of the coming of age of the world of
humanity at the juncture of the new millennium, must embrace the constructive
contributions it will entail, and must make room and open appropriate space for China to
assume its rightful peaceful leadership role in the New World Order.
Any uninformed and conservative member of the Western world who, faced with the
unbound and unleashed forces of world civilization, feels threatened and fights against it,
will sooner or later find their feeble efforts exhausted, and will in the process, have
become the very source of instability.
On the contrary, the entire West should at once, wholeheartedly, with heartfelt emotions
and with open arms, embrace China and welcome its leadership participation in the new
world on the occasion of the new age.
Such a spontaneous and wide action will ensure a peaceful world order in which a China
and Western world, neither threatened nor threatening, will have joined hands in
complimentary roles to advance the cause of the progress of civilization.

LETTER TO FARZAM
Farzam,
I have returned San Francisco. I read the book "China's Peace Theories" published by
your generous support. The content and scope is excellent. I read it with a great deal of
resonance and feeling. Though the title is peace, when it comes to quotations of
Confucius and Lao Zi a lot of the original concept is harmony. This is quite
understandable because harmony is the essence of Chinese ancient culture. Harmony
also has a much broader and contemporary meaning. As my wife, another
American China expert, said. That is why I am writing about harmony renaissance.
Reviving Chinese peace and harmony ancient culture will enhance the rightful image of
China that has been overshadowed by Western media, particularly the Strong U.S. media
projection of American image. You and I are the very few noted American personality
that have achieved worldwide recognition by our writing. My position on harmony
renaissance is widely published on the Internet. I am grateful to providence, your
position on China's rise is peaceful and not a threat to the world is well received and
recognized by the highest level of Chinese leadership.
I have published over 80 essays and three books on harmony renaissance. I will ship you
100 copies of each of my books. When you Google harmony renaissance, harmony
consensus and harmony diplomacy my writings are top listed and second to none on the
first page. My first book "China’s Harmony Renaissance: What the Must Know" calls for
world attention to China's revival of ancient harmony culture. It is the logical and
contemporary harmony writing following the trail set by your book "China's Peace
Theories" in presenting China in the rightful perspective. That is why my essays, as your
peace essays and book, are well recognized by the Chinese media. Mine are also
published by Xinhuanet, Chinanet and People's Daily Net, to name a few. I have asked
our mutual friend, Eileen Chan to deliver to you ASAP a copy of each of my first two
books by hand.
Eileen Chen and Lin Guang Qian, noted Chinese translator on his own, are helping me to
translate my first book into Chinese. As you know all my books on harmony renaissance
are in English. I will have the Chinese version of my first book ready for presentation to
the inner circle of highest Chinese leaders, when you arrange the World Harmony
Organization visit to Beijing during May 2008. I will also bring with me the 1988
vintage calligraphy by one of the most renowned artist Liu Hai Su. As I mentioned in my
previous email Mr. Liu wrote "The Most Great Peace Will Surely Come" for our Peace
painting exhibition 1988 by our commission. It can be an announcement of the coming
of he Harmonious World from the perspective of the inevitable unity in diversity
multilateral world.
I am setting up GENEI (Green Energy Inventions Depository) both in the U.S. and Hong
Kong by your understanding with me. You will also be my co founder. The other parties
will be a small group of American friends who also believe in harmony Renaissance.
They will come in as one party with small equity position. You and I will remain as the
49
principle founder of the original core group. The other parties that will come in later may
be the HK proto type team and Kleiner Perkins, the U.S. premium green energy VC
associated with Al Gore. I will keep you informed of progress.
Kindly acknowledge by return confirming email since this is the first email from the
U.S. I want to make sure our U.S. email communication is set up without any hitch.
My warmest wishes to your wife and you children. Mr. Liu Xi Gui also conveys his
regards.

WORLD HARMONY RENAISSANCE IN 21ST CENTURY
LETTER TO PAN KI-MOON, SECRETARY GENERAL OF U.N., AL GORE OF
KLEINER PERKINS, FARZAM KAMALABADI OF FUTURE TRENDS,
JONATHAN SUN OF THE SUN GROUP, FRANK LIU SPOKESPERSON OF
U.N. FORUM
53
WORLD HARMONY RENAISSANCE CENTERS
Harmony belongs to the world. World Harmony Organization (WHO) invites your
participation to pursue World Harmony Renaissance by establishing World Harmony
Renaissance Centers (WHRC) and World Harmony Institutes (WHI) at promising and up
and coming locations. We are dedicated to initiate World Harmony Renaissance
Symposiums, World Harmony Cultural Festivals, World Harmony Preamble and
Declaration, World Harmony Ambassadors and Volunteers Programs.
Our humble efforts to initiate Harmony Renaissance are only at the beginning. We invite
worldwide participation. Your participation can be very valuable to human progress. We
look forward to your inquiry and contribution to worldwide WORLD HARMONY
RENAISSANCE CENTERS and related world harmony undertakings.
United Nations under our current secretary general, Pan Ki-Moon has announced his
mission to pursuit harmony. A pressing task is to establish an Eastern U N headquarters,
possibly in China to facilitate East and West cultural exchange. This can only be
accomplished through the establishment of WHRC and WHI worldwide beginning from
U N headquarter to be built. From there world harmony ambassadors can be appointed
and world harmony volunteers can be first trained to spread harmony teaching and
harmony projects. These worthwhile activities are aimed to pursuit East- West and
North-South dialogues, cultural exchanges which are essential for world understanding
and harmony.
54
The research and feasibility study results on green energy inventions from worldwide
WHRC can be transferred to all nations free of charge for implementation at various
selected Harmony Cities for demonstration and commercialization. Each WHRC will be
located where the talent and resources are most available. When feasibility and suitability
are proven, manufacturing and mass production can be carried out for world wide use to
replace conventional hydro-carbon energy production to reduce pollution.
Harmony Cities can be built around the world under the auspicious of U N. Each
harmony cities will have its own WHRC and WHI under the auspicious of U N or each
government with coordination by U N to focus on major undertakings such as harmony
practice and harmony diplomacy research. There will be studies and training to
accomplish multilateral cultural understanding that is conducive to harmony among
nations and peace and understanding. The spirit of “Be proud we are citizens of the
world and not citizens of one nation” will be fostered through Harmony Cities. After all
we are all living in a global village.
The first Harmony City have been proposed to be building in China by the collective
efforts of Future Trends Organization, the Sun Group and Associates and World Harmony

received support by the Chinese leaders and U N. China already initiated her own
harmony society and world harmony policy as witnessed by various articles widely
reported and books on China’s harmony and world harmony renaissance by World
Harmony Organization. Please visit www.amazon.com for books under the subject of

IN MY LAST OPEN LETTER TO YOU, BAN-KIMOON, AL GORE AND FRANK
LIU I GAVE AN OVERVIEW OF THE PRIORITIES, PRINCIPLES AND BELIEFS OF
WORLD HARMONY ORGANIZATION. HARMONY IS A MOST UNIVERSAL
COMMON VALUE, THE ORDER OF NATURE AND THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE
OF THE UNIVERSE. HARMONY RENAISSANCE IS A MOVEMENT THAT IS THE
UNSTOPPABLE CURRENT TIDE. HARMONY RENAISSANCE IS ALSO THE
NEXT WAVE OF WORLDWIDE HUMAN CREATIVE ENERGY THAT WILL BRING
HUMAN TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS BEYOND EUROPEAN
RENAISSANCE, AS I STATED MANY TIMES BEFORE.

LETTER RECOMMENDING
PROFESSOR FUNG TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT
U N SPRING CULTURAL FESTIVAL
“World Harmony Renaissance” is the inevitable tide of world development. Such theory
is the universal common value to resolve human conflicts that are facing us today.
Already World Harmony Renaissance theory is beginning to resonate in the world. This
inevitable tide will be the second wave of human renaissance, World Harmony
Renaissance. We wish to be part of this tide of world peace and harmony. The essence of
harmony is renouncing violence, advocating tolerance, acceptance, respect, equality,
patience, forgiveness and humility.
World Harmony Renaissance is the catalyst for world cultural exchange. In a multilateral
world culture cannot just flow from the West to the East or the North to the South.
Harmony is unity in diversity. It is the all inclusive bonding force. Harmony is the order
of nature and the principle of the universe. We also learned that your theories published
in a series of volumes on harmony renaissance, harmony consensus, and harmony
diplomacy has reached the desk of Chairman Hu Jintao. As representative for Jewish
Americans I earnestly wish that you will accept our invitation to be our keynote speaker
at the seminar.
Our group, Sun Group as investment banker, is also the project organizer for this event.
We are responsible for the selection of outstanding influential speakers. We are much
honored and proud that you can attend.
As your theory expounds: The most great peace will surely come!

The invisible energy that created the universe can also be called DAO.
Lao Zi said "Dao created one, one created two, two created three,
three created all things. All things carry Ying and embrace Yang.
Dynamic balance creates harmony."
