President’s Message
Aloha Waiakea Lions and CIS!!
Holy Mackerel!! Where is the time
going nowadays!! It seems like I just
sat down to write my last Presidents
Message. I knew it was going to be
busy, but it was all fun and worth-
while!!
The 2009 HMSA Community Flu
Immunization Project was beneficial to
about 500 people including six WLC
members and one Akaka Falls member who
participated in the 6-hour clinic.
LCI World Service Day turned out to be a beau-
tiful afternoon at Leleiwi Beach Park. 25 Lions,
1 CIS, 42 Leos and 2 advisors all pitched in to
gather 103 bags of trash and green waste from
the beach, shoreline park. Really looked great
after completed. PID Herbert Watanabe's
Chicken Hekka was a big hit.
Keiki Vision testing took place at Waiake-
awaena and Hilo Union Elementary schools
with a total of 142 children screened.
The 1st Annual WLC Family Fun Day held at
Laupahoehoe Beach Park was just delightful,
with incredibly beautiful weather! Program chair
Lion Paul Sebala, as usual, did an outstanding
job of scheduling different activities for the
crowd of 35. Lion Ken Uemura had a wonderful
variety of delicious grinds to the delight of eve-
ryone. Lion Craig Watanabe kept things rolling
as the MC for the day. A special treat for every-
one was the "Magic Show" by the talented and
slight of hand illusionist Lion Bob Kawakone.
October 15th was the 1st White Cane Safety
Awareness Walk in Hilo Lion Cedric Mitsui led a
group of 30 people, walking around the State
building.
October 24th, 29th and 31st, a dedicated group
of WLC members met at Prince Kuhio Plaza to
work on the Hilo Jaycees Haunted House to
3 scare the bejeebers out of anyone that dared
enter. From set up, operations and break-
down the Lions and Leos were there to
complete the task (Project report in next
month's issue).
Lions Helping Lions had a real engineering
job over at Lion Clifford Yamaguchi's
home, forming and pouring a 15-step ce-
ment staircase. Lions Jimmy, George,
Fonz, Abe, Herb, Duffy, and some of Billy’s
softball club pitched in. Talk about brains
and brawn, those Lions are something
else!!!!!! With this project in the planning stages
for several years It turned out beautiful! We
might be slow at times, BUT we get it done.
The Good Cheer Committee is sending Aloha
to Lions Melvin Kunimoto, Loren Mochida, Ken
Nakagawa and yours truly, Lions, Give these
Lions a call and find out how they are doing, I'm
sure they would like to talk story!!
Lion Wayne Kuwaye is hoping your minds are
searching for some good ideas for his Long
Range Planning Retreat coming up Nov. 21. If
you enjoy good wine and pupus, don't forget the
Akaka Falls Event, Nov. 7.

DG Alan Garson
and CIS Priscilla
visited WLC on the
October 20th GM
meeting awarding
the LCI President's
Excellency Medal to IPP Abe Kubo
highlighting service activities and the
bulletin done by WLC and to services
to District 50.
DG Garson was presented a gift cer-
tificate and a giant black spider by
Prexy Ken Rosene. DG Garson pre-
sented his DG pin to all members
present at this GM Meeting.
Prexy Ken Rosene reported on the
HMSA Flu Clinic, project chair Lion
Stanley Takemura.
Lion Billy Lyman reported on Octo-
ber's Lions Helping Lions project at
Lion Clifford Yamaguchi residence
involving two days of form setting and
concrete pouring.
Lion Billy and Lion Paul Sebala (M/
S) to approve a disaster fund dona-
tion of $1,000 to LCIF for American
Samoa and the Philippines in the
name of Waiakea Lions Club.
4 Lion Stanley Takemura also re-
ported that the Hilo Jaycees re-
quested assistance on their Hallow-
een Haunted House project for Hal-
loween at the Prince Kuhio Plaza.
Construction of the Haunted House
commenced on October 24th and
resumed on October 29th.
Lion Cedric Mitsui reporting for the
Membership Committee on the re-
ceipt of three new member applica-
tions for review by the BOD. Induction
to be held on November 3rd GM
meeting. Lion Mitsui also reported on
Waiakea Lions Club participation in
the White Cane Safety Awareness
Walk to be sponsored by WLC as
well as upcoming (October 2009)
Keiki Vision Screening at Waiakea
Elementary and Hilo Union Schools.
PDG George Kodani reported that
the WLC Keiki Christmas party will
take place on Sunday December 6th,
2009. Flyer and Response form sent
to all members via US Mail. RSVP
before Thursday, November 19th,
2009 for accurate head count. This
year’s theme is “Making Memories”.
Lion Bob Kawakone reported that
the RVII Christmas Party for the visu-
ally impaired will be held on Thurs-
day, December 10th, 2009 at Nani
Mau. Cost to be $28.15 per person
with approximately 30 guests signing
up. Region VII will cover 50% of the
cost with the balance covered equally

Lion Wayne Kuwaye reminds us that
we need to turn in the Long Range
Planning Retreat form for further dis-
cussion at our next Long Range Plan-
ning Retreat to be held Saturday, No-
vember 12th, 2009 at 9:00am. Loca-
tion to be announced later.
IPP Abe Kubo also needs all mem-
bers who haven't turned in their mem-
ber profile sheet to do so ASAP. A
member directory and CD file is being
prepared and there are a few WLC
Members that need to turn those pro-
file sheets in right away.

ing from their ills and
are doing well. Lion Ken also reported
on the Akaka Falls Lions Club Wine
Tasting Event scheduled for Saturday,
November 7, 2009, Meishoin Hall, 6 –
9 p.m., $25.00, sign up sheet circu-
lated.
3rd V.P. Lion Robert Kawakone re-
ported on the World Service Day pro-
ject and the WLC Family Fun Day.
Lion Billy Lyman reported that the
next WLC Children's Christmas party
meeting will be on Friday, November
13, 2009, 5:00 p.m., potluck at his
home. OSM and DHS have submitted
their list of children totaling 100 that
will be attending this party.
Lion Billy Lyman also reported on the
continuing Lions Helping Lions project
with Lion Clifford Yamaguchi's con-
crete pour on October 29th at 8:30am.
6 The RVII Christmas Party scheduled
for 5:30pm,Thursday, December 10th,
2009 at Nani Mau will cost $28.15 per
person with 33 guests having signed
up so far. Region VII will cover 50% of
the cost of this party with the remain-
der to be prorated between the re-
gional clubs.
Lion Cedric Mitsui submitted The
Keiki Vision Project and the White
Cane Safety Awareness Walk reports
held this past October. Lion Cedric
Mitsui also submitted a project activity
report for the donation of 74 sun-
glasses to OSM for underprivileged
children.
Lion Sam Kawamura will be setting
up the schedule for the upcoming Am-
blyopia screening for four pre-schools.
Lion Paul Sebala reported on the
Weinberg Foundation grant project
slated for December 12th, 2009.
There will be a conflict with the Salva-
tion Army Bell Ringing project sched-
uled for the same date. Lion Sebala
also reported on the need for Waiakea
Lions to provide security after the Ben
Franklin Craft Fair for November 27th
and 28th, 2009. Security is needed
after the fair closes on Friday evening.

be held at 5:30pm on Thursday, No-
vember 5th, 2009.

A motion was made and passed to

rescind the BOD action on member-
ship recruitment procedures previously
approved at the September 8th, 2009
BOD meeting due to conflicts with
WLC's pre-existing constitutional by-
laws. Motion was passed.

It was with regret that the Board of

Directors have approved the resigna-
tions of Lion members Barry Mark
and Dave Watters due to personal
reasons including family concerns.

prove Membership Applications
(Kayleen Kameda, Tracey Kameda,
Gerald Seikaku) submitted by the
Membership Committee. Motion
passed.

waii, Inc. maintenance contract for

World Service Day Leleiwi Beach Park

WLC conducted our
Leleiwi Beach Park
major clean-up as
our contribution to
the LCI World Ser-
vice Day.
25 Lions attended
this project including Lions, Tony
Arruda, Jon Lum Duffy Bartels, Billy
Lyman, Chuck Bolden, Cedric Mit-
sui, Bryan Ito, James Miyaki, Bob
Kawakone, Pat Naughton, Ikuo Ki-
yohara, Kevin Ono, George Kodani,
Ken Rosene, James Kojima, Richard
Santos, Abe Kubo, Stanley Take-
mura, Wayne Kuwaye, Ken Uemura,
Herbert Watanabe, Clifford Yamagu-
chi and Paul Sebala along with CIS
Carol Kuwaye, 42 Leos and 2 advi-
sors participated in this year’s World
Service Day project.

WLC Family Fund
Day was held on
October 10, 2009,
at the Laupahoe-
hoe Beach Park. 14
Lions, 5 CIS, 8 chil-
dren, 3 prospective
members and 2
guests.
Kudos to following committee chairs.
Program chair, Lion Paul Sebala, for
his outstanding work in developing an
enjoyable program where there was
something for everyone in atten-
dance. The games, the Super Draw,
Bingo, and his creativeness and inno-
vation added to the enjoyment and
success of our 1st Annual Family Fun
Day.
Food committee chair, Lion Ken Ue-
mura who once again lend his exper-
tise in food management and his
skills as Chef, that provided for a Pot-
luck table, second to none. His skills
guaranteed a safe and orderly Pot-
luck table to the delight of all in atten-
dance.
Kudos to Lion Craig Watanabe for
being our MC for the day. His skills
as MC keep everything moving to the
enjoyment of all. Good job Lion Craig.
9 Mahalo Nui Loa, WLC, Lions, CIS,
prospective members and guests,
who brought their share of refresh-
ments to the Potluck table. On the
menu, BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, Pork
ribs, baked Mahi mahi, poke, hot-
dogs, fried rice, veggies, yummy po-
tato/macaroni salads, and some in-
credible deserts, all fit for a King.
Everyone went for 2nds, 3rds and
more. All the beverage you can
have, water, soda, tea, juice, coffee,
and of course, beer for the hardy.
Lion Paul Sebala provided some
challenging mind games, the ever
exciting Bingo, the Super Draw, with
everyone winning more than one
prize. The day also included an en-
joyable “Magic Show” by Lion Bob
Kawakone. The adults, enjoyed the
show as much as the children.
Thanks to Lion Carl and his son Carl
Jr. for being a brave volunteer consid-
ering Lion Paul’s equipment malfunc-
tion! Oops!
Kudos to Lions Cedric Mitsui, Paul
Sebala, Bob Kawakone, Bill Lyman,
Ken Uemura for their generous dona-
tions that added to the success of our
Family Fun Day.

HMSA 2009 Community Flu Immunization

On October 1st, Waiakea Lions pro-
vided the manpower to assist the
HMSA in registering the general pub-
lic for an annual flu shot with cost
reimbursable under HMSA or Medi-
care Part B insurance programs. The
clinic ran from 9-3pm at the Gathering
Place in the Prince Kuhio Plaza.

Profile: Lion James kojima

Lion James T Kojima & CIS
Sue S. (Shirai)
Lion James was born on January
27, 1927 in Hilo, and CIS Sue was
also born in Hilo. The Kojimas, cur-
rently reside on Nohea Street. Lion
James has a brother Katsuyoshi
(deceased), sister-in-law (Hanako)
Kojima, and a sister
Alice (Gordon)
Kadowaki. CIS Sue
have 2 brothers, and 5
sisters. Lion James
and CIS Sue has a
daughter, Lorraine,
(Chris) Martin and a
granddaughter, Chris-
taine.
Lion James attended Hilo Union,
Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High
School then served in the United
States Army during World War II.
He worked for the County Of Ha-
waii Fire Department for 28 years
and retired as a Captain in 1981, as
well as being a part-time contractor
for 40 years.
Lion James has been an active Wai-
akea Lion member since 1983. His
expertise in construction has been
valuable in many of the projects
undertaken over the years and is
still sought when we have a con-
13 struction project. He has served as
Chairman of the sight and hearing
committee, and as the "go-to" man
whenever you need help, you can
count on lion James being
there...Just give him a call, and he
will be there.

beach by Scout Island and sighted a
lone swimmer
doing laps and
wondered who
that might be.
Ask Lion James,
and you may be
surprised at who
that person is.
CIS Sue attended
Olaa Elementary, Olaa Intermedi-
ate, Hilo High School, and has an
Associates Degree from UH Hilo
Community College. CIS Sue was
employed at the Dole Company of-
fice for 25 years before retiring in
1985.

2009 Hilo Jaycee’s Haunted House

The Hilo Jaycees invited the Waiakea
Lions once again to help with their
annual Haunted House, this year at
the Prince Kuhio Plaza. A complete
report will be published in the Decem-
ber issue of Ka Leo O Ka Liona as
this project ended literally at the end
of the month of October on Halloween

this spooky abode.

all the props he provided and also to
Lion Stan Takemura for bringing all
the foliage. That made for even more
realism especially with the weeds and
the real bugs crawling around the pot-
ted plants.

This year
Prince Kuhio
Plaza invited
the Hilo Jay-
cees to set up
Lion Ikuo wires up the foggers their Haunted
House indoors.
Their efforts paid off with throngs of
families and patrons jamming the en-
tire mall as the Haunted House
opened it’s creepy gates at 2pm, run-
ning all the way to 6:30pm.
There were costume contests as well
as stores and kiosks handing out Hal-
loween treats to all the kids young
and old alike. By 6:30pm the line was
still going strong to get into the
Haunted House. But the volunteers
were hoarse from screaming and the
Lions were eager to start the break-
down as everything had to be taken
down that night.
By 8pm the Haunted House was but
another empty room but the parking
lot to get out was like trying to get out
of a UH Warrior Football game at
Aloha Stadium. PACKED! With a
light rainfall outside, this free event
was a complete success.

project involved several days of
preparation for the cement pour and
is still ongoing to complete the weld-
ing of the hand rails. The complete
