Name: Molly Dincher Setting/Site: State College Area High School Activity/Unit/Topic: Balance and Muscular Endurance

Date: 4/15/14

Time: 8:10-9:00 am

Student Information: Harley is 17 years old, around 59 and weighs around 145 pounds. He has been in the program for 3 years and will be in the program until he is 21 years old. He used to have many seizures when he was younger causing him to not talk at all. Harley is an extremely laid back and happy student and a lot of fun to work with. Even though he cant talk you can see the enjoyment he has for this PE class and has a ritual he does everyday which is riding the tricycle or pushing the grocery cart throughout the hallways. He loves to clean up messes or pick up different objects. He has a buzz cut with many scars on his skull from his past surgeries with blue eyes and large cheek bones.

Grade Level or Age of Individual(s) you are planning this activity for: 17 years old Student(s) Disability and Implications: (Briefly describe your students disability. List the important implications will you need to remember when presenting your lesson/activity to your individual.) Disability Condition Autism- Autism is a brain development Implications/Adaptations First I will have to remember that he cant talk, so I should use hand motions, cards and to repeat my cues to help communicate with him. He also has his rituals that he does every day and if something is done out of the ordinary he gets frustrated, so I will alter activities that he does already, to make them a little more challenging. He also has limited motion and has difficulties with coordination, so during some activities help guide him to certain objects, such as the medicine ball and on the balance beams.

disorder characterized as having difficulties in social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors also including difficulties in motor coordination and attention. This disorder is very common in the United States infecting 1 in 88 children and grows every year.

Degree of Assistance/Support Needed: Describe any physical and/or technological assistance or support your individual(s) will need in order to successfully complete your lesson/activity. Include personnel assistance beyond yourself, when appropriate. Disability Condition Autism Degree of Assistance Assistance from Para and myself while on the balance beam Pads upright to be placed around the balance beam for him to hold onto Assistance if a medicine ball is a little too heavy to pick up

Individual(s) Objectives: Cognitive: Harley will be able to think of and use different strategies to pick up and roll the medicine balls Harley will be able to think of different ways to balance his body on the 2x4 piece of inclined wood and on the outdoor playground equipment. Psychomotor: Harley will be able to walk across an inclined 2 by 4 piece of wood by himself, with mats placed around him. Harley will be able to pick up 5 pound medicine balls, place them in the grocery cart and take 4 laps throughout the halls with the medicine balls placed in the grocery cart. Affective: Harley will be able to improve his balance and muscular strength to progress his mobility and coordination in the future. Harley will be using the appropriate safety protocols to prevent injuries from happening.

Teacher Objectives: Harley will have fun doing these activities and will have success at all of these activities most of the time.

Equipment: Tricycle, 2x4 piece of wood, at least 2 mats, 4-5 medicine balls at different weights, grocery cart, a step to incline the wood (balance beam), outside playground equipment, cones

Protocols: (What are important protocols you will review with the individual(s) at the beginning of the lesson/activity? Script them so it is exactly what you will be saying)

If I call out freeze, I want everyone to stop and freeze to prevent anyone from running into each other If a medicine ball is too heavy, tap Para or I to help pick the ball up with you or roll the ball to the grocery cart and the Para or myself will pick the ball up and place it into the grocery cart. At any time feel free to grab hold of the Para or my hand if you feel like you are getting off balanced or are close to falling Last but not least dont leave the area or go to the next activity without the Para or myself because I do not want you to be working on these activities without supervision.

LESSON CONTENT & PROGRESSIONS Introduction, skills task analysis, activity, review

Teaching Cues The cues are short quotes of what you are saying to students to remind them of proper form.

MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES Organization of space, equipment, students (diagrams of practice formations, equipment set up, and game situations ), including method for assigning students to groups

Safety Procedures Checking field, equipment, and facilities for debris, damage, etc. What safety procedures will you take to make sure ALL students are safe in your class?

Introduction: Hey Harley how are you doing today? Today we have a lot planned out for you; you will first get to go on one of your favorites, the tricycle, doing a few laps around the hallways. After the tricycle we are going to get the grocery cart, grab around 5 medicine balls and have you roll them through the hallways and placing them in the cart as you go along. After giving those muscles a good workout we will move onto working on your balance with the incline balance beam and heading outside to the playground equipment, where you will hurdle, balance and weave in and out through the equipment. So lets get started. Instant Activity The student will grab the tricycle and take about 4 laps throughout the hallways to get warmed up for the activities. While he is on the bike the Para and I will be walking with him on the side to guide him if he goes the wrong direction. While biking he should keep his eyes up to see where he is going and

Give the introduction to Harley in the hallway to prevent disrupting the others classes in the fitness center and so he is close to the tricycle to get started right away. Have all of the equipments set up and ready to go before Harley gets to the classroom.

Before setting up the activities, check the areas for slippery spots and check the equipment to make sure its not damaged and safe to use.

keeping the knee in while pedaling to prevent knee damage. If student is doing this activity too easily set up cones and have him steer in between the cones to work on coordination. Grocery Cart Activity Have Harley grab the grocery cart, having two hands in the middle of the bar, and push it to the medicine ball holder in the fitness center to place the balls in the grocery cart. Pick about 4-5 medicine balls under 8 pounds. Have Harley push the cart to the hallways to take some laps. As he is pushing the cart the Para and I will take the medicine balls out of the cart and roll them down the hall. Once Harley gets to a medicine ball, he will stop pushing the cart, pick up the medicine ball by bending the knees, keeping the back straight to prevent hurting his back, and then place the ball into the cart. If you want to give him a better challenge have him the roll the ball himself, and then pick it up. This will help his muscular endurance and muscular strength all in one. Have him do this for about 3 laps around the hallways. After he is done with this activity, push the cart over to the medicine ball holder again and have him place the balls in the right holder and then push the cart out to the hallway ready to be put away. Balance Beam After the grocery cart activity, lead Harley to the fitness center where the 2x4 piece of wood is inclined by a step creating a balance beam. Place mats around the balance beam to give him comfort in case he falls. Demonstrate for Harley how to walk up the balance beam incline by keeping arms out to keep balance and placing one foot closely in front of the other foot. After the demonstration have Harley give it a try by first having help from Para or myself. After a few tries with assistance place the mats in an upright position so when he goes up this time he

on before riding the tricycle around.

hold the cart with two hands in the middle of the bar

Have the grocery cart paced to the side of the hallway so its easy access for Harley. Make sure the medicine balls are placed in the holders properly so they dont roll off while he tries to pick them up.

Make sure he is picking up the medicine balls by bending his knees and keeping the back straight instead of putting all the strain on his back. This will prevent back injuries.

bend the knees and keep the back straight

If Harley is struggling picking up the ball, assist in picking up the ball with him, so it wont slip and fall on his toes while he is carrying the ball or picking it up. The Para and I will be walking beside the grocery cart, so he doesnt go off course.

keep arms out for balance

Give assistance whenever he feels uncomfortable.

Make sure other students are away from the area, to prevent Harley from getting distracted.

has something to hold onto, acting like a railing. After a few tries of using the mats, take one mat away and see if he will walk up the incline by himself. If he gets past this test, try having him go up with the mats placed down and no assistance, if he refuses let one person assist him to work on his balance. After a few tries its time to go out on the outside equipment. Outdoor Equipment If it is a nice sunny day, lead Harley outside to the outdoor fitness playground equipment. There is a lineup of many different types of equipment to hurdle, balance or go throughout. Have Harley use and experiment with the equipment to see how he explores these different objects. When he balances have him keep his arms out to keep his balance and to place his feet one in front of the other. When he hurdles, have his first foot go around the equipment, get good ground when landing and bring the second foot to the same height over the equipment keeping foot straight to prevent his second foot from getting caught. Review Harley you did a great job today and I can already see massive improvements from the first day I started working with you. Can you show me how to keep your balance? Now can you show me how to hurdle objects? How should you pick up certain objects? Your balance, coordination and strength is progressing every day and its awesome to see that. You have a great day and Ill see you next class. Assessment/Evaluation

place one foot closely in front of the other

Make sure the piece of wood and step that is used is clean from scratches or notches so the wood wont break during this activity.

keep arms out to keep balance

Dont let him on any equipment if it is wet or if its raining outside to prevent him from falling off the equipment.

Bring second foot over equipment keeping foot straight

When he hurdles certain equipment give assistance in case his back foot gets caught on the equipment.

Put all of the equipment used during the activities away in the closets and in the appropriate spots so they arent in the way of other classes.
