This real-estate story sounds almost like a fairy tale or the beginning of a big Hollywood production. Back in 2010 a Parisian apartment on the Right Bank, near the Opra Garnier, left unoccupied since 1942 was discovered. It was owned by Madame de Florian a socialite and an actress who fled to the South of France during the second world war, leaving everything behind. She never came back to Paris but kept on paying her rent until the day she died when she was 91. Its only after she died that someone a Commissaire Priseur Auctioneer re-enter her apartment for the first time in over 70 years.

There was a smell of old dust, said Olivier Choppin-Janvry who made the discovery. Walking under high wooden ceilings, past an old wood stove and stone sink in the kitchen, he spotted a stuffed ostrich and a Mickey Mouse toy dating from before the war. Taxidermy pieces were commonly found throughout Mme de Florians apartment. It was common to have taxidermy in ones home back in the day, in fact, having a few as home decor was a sign of affluence.

Those images are just amazing, and moving at the same time. A place left untouched and undisturbed since one of the darkest time of Paris is a rare not to say unseen sight.

They also found a painting by Giovanni Boldini, the subject a beautiful Frenchwoman who turned out to be the artists former muse, la belle Madame de Florian herself. The expert could not find any records of the painting, until they found a card with a scribbled love note from Boldini, the painting was sold for 2.1 million, a world record for the artist.

The rest was left un-dusted and un-disturbed to this day. Unfortunately, this home is not open to the public and it is owned entirely by her estate.

Regarding, Where is the dust? I have explored old barns, homes and cellars in the midwest that have undergone decades of quietude and was first amazed at the lack of dust. There is dust, but it is uniform, on horizontal surfaces. When you think about it, where would a high volume of dust come from in a closed room? Reply
Reblogged this on All in the life of a Nanny and commented: This is pretty neat..I have to say, Im interested in why she didnt return: bad memories of the war perhaps? Reply
Everything in that place has got be worth thousands upon thousands individually. I mean EVERYTHING. Even whatever tissue paper she had in there could be worth a lot if its still intact. Reply

I see layer upon layer of dust! What are you looking at?! Reply
There is quite a lot of dust. Just what you would expect from a real place. Not like the exaggerated scenography in a movie. Reply
Dust has to come from somewhere. No people means no dead skin, which in turn means the only dust is what was still in the air at time of leaving. Reply
In the absence of air blowing in through open windows or central heating, almost all household dust comes from skin cells exfoliated by people who live in an area. If no one is living there, you dont get much dust. I have a vacation unit I only visit every few years. When we go in there, its musty and theres some cob webs and always mouse droppings, but theres virtually no dust at all. Reply
Amazing to consider the stories the walls could tell. Nazi occupied troops in the streets, etc,etc Reply
Feu or rent, I wonder why she never came back to her beloved belongings. There is a lesson here, perhaps about putting off intentions till it is too late, ie procrastination? Now I want to know HER story. Reply
