Laura McCormick ELD 375 Book Talk Presentation Lesson Subject: Multiplication Word Problems Grade: 4th Rational:

The purpose of this lesson is for the students to be able to break apart word problems and to solve them step by step. Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 7. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.B.5 Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.2 Examples: If 6 4 = 24 is known, then 4 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 5 2 can be found by 3 5 = 15, then 15 2 = 30, or by 5 2 = 10, then 3 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 5 = 40 and 8 2 = 16, one can find 8 7 as 8 (5 + 2) = (8 5) + (8 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.) Objective: Given a graphic organizer with fill in the blanks, students will be able to follow along with the read aloud and answer the multiplication word problems. Procedure: Today class, we will be reviewing our multiplication skills using word problems. I will be reading this book (hold book up) called Each Orange Had Eight Slices, by Paul Giganti. After each page, we will stop as a whole class and answer the questions relating to the problem The students will have a graphic organizer, where they will fill in the blanks with the numbers Then the students will have time to answer the multiplication problems quietly I will call on a student to answer each question Then I will continue to read until the end of the story By the end of the book, the students should have the graphic organizer complete

Exit Slip: Each student will be given a piece of paper with a challenge problem on it that they can complete on their own Materials: Graphic Organizer for each student The book, Each Orange Had Eight Slices by Paul Giganti

Exit slips for each student

Assessment: Students will be assessed on how well they complete the graphic organizer. This will demonstrate if the students were able to comprehend the material and if they understand the multiplication steps with more than three numbers. Differentiation: The graphic organizer is made to help the slower learners so that they can follow along and stay on track. Each student will be given the same sheet. This will only help all students to stay on track. For the advanced learners the will be given a more challenging exit slip that they need to answer. Exit slips will be given out based on the childs learning level with a slight challenge.
