Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering (JNNCE) In the year 1946, a dedicated group of philanthropists and freedom fighters established the National Education Society (N.E.S.). It was the collective vision of these individuals that transformed the quality of education in the region. Today, the NES is known as a formidable achiever in the field of education, managing 39 educational institutions in various fields Engineering, Pharmacy, Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Applied Sciences, and Management etc. In the year 1980, JNNCE was established by National Education Society . The college has more than three decades of fruitful existence. The College is approved by Government of Karnataka and AICTE; affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum. A preferred destination of students seeking technical education, the institution offers BE degree in 7 branches namely Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical & Electronics Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science & Engg., Information Science & Engg., Telecommunication Engg., 3 PG Courses, namely M. Tech in Computer Science & Engg., Network & Internet Engg., Machine Design, Transportation Engg. & Management, Digital Electronics & Communication Systems., MCA and MBA, besides M.Sc. (Engg.) and Ph.D. in six disciplines. Spread over a sprawling campus of 54 acres having all amenities to cater to the needs of about 3000 students and 250 staff members, the institution is reputed for its high-caliber faculty, excellent infrastructure, academic environment and placement. Around 10000 graduates and post-graduates have so far passed out from this College and have been making significant contributions in academic institutions, industry R & D organisations and Government Departments in India and abroad. The institution has, in the recent past, organized 7 conferences, namely National Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering NAME 2004 in March 2004; International Conference on Human Machine Interface ICHMI 2004 in December 2004, National Conference on Vision, Graphics and Image Processing NVGIP 2005 in March 2005, National Workshop on Cryptology NWC05 in August 2005, National Conference on The New Growth Cycle in the context of Globalisation: Lessons for India Inc. in October 2005. About IETE Shimoga Sub Centre The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) is the national apex body of Professional engineers devoted to the advancement of Electronics, Telecommunications, IT and allied areas. IETE serves more than 72,000 members both individual and industrial organizations through its 65 centers spread all over India including one abroad. The main objectives of IETE is to organize conferences, symposia, workshops & brain storming sessions involving concerned professionals, students, industry & associations for the advancement of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science & allied subjects. All these activities are being conducted efficiently by the IETE Centres / Subcentres and student forums (ISF) under the guidance of IETE Head Quarters at New Delhi. To cater to the needs of the corporate members & student members in and around Shimoga, the IETE Shimoga Centre was setup. This Centre has a geographical jurisdiction of Shimoga, Davangere, Chitradurga & Chickmaglore districts. This is the 56th Centre of IETE & 5thCentre in Karnataka. The Shimoga Sub centre has been conducting a number of activities like Lecturesessions, Seminars, workshops etc the Workshop on Electronics for High school students is one of the most popular annual event flagship event of Shimoga Sub centre. Currently the Centre has membership strength of 85 corporate members and 25 Student members along with 2 ISF with 800 student members. At present the Centre is housed in rented premises in J.N.N. College of Engineering.

About National Education Society (N.E.S) During the Freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation stressed the need for quality rural education and development of women education and urged the leaders and youth to help in promoting it. Senior Freedom fighters and public of Shimoga were first to respond to the call of Mahatma. In 1946 they set up the National education society at Shimoga which is the important place of Malnad Area of Western Ghat Region in the Country which is endowed with rich and enchanting grace of Nature. The Society with the zeal dedication of senior leaders of the district like Mr. S.V.Krishna Murthy Rao, former deputy speaker of Loksabha, Mr.H.S.Rudrappa, Former Minister of Karnataka. Mr.P.Murudappa, Mr.R.K.Jayatheerthachar and Mr.S.Narasimha Murthy senior Advocates, Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shrestty, Ex-MLA and a great social worker and others strived hard to build the institution as founders to achieve the aspirations of Mahatma. The society started independently Managed High School in the district during 1946 and constructed its own building with public assistance. With a view to give thrust towards girls education NES opened the first Girls High School in the district in 1954 and gradually opened educational institutions in rural areas of the district to cater the needs of rural people. Many illustrious leaders, statesman, personalities have visited the National education Society and have blessed by appreciating the dedicated service of the society. Among them are Honorable Dr.Rajendra Prasad, former President of India, Philosopher educationist Dr.S.Radha Krishnan, former president of India, Shri Lal Bahadhur Shastry, Former Prime Minister of India, Sri Jayachamaraj wodeyar, former Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Vinoba Bhave a great leader of Sarvodaya movement, Acharya Tulsi leader of Anavarath Movement are few among them. Despite number of problems during and after freedom struggle the enthusiasm and commitment of National Education Society never deterred towards working for the cause of education. The society started number of professional Colleges in the district. Now it is running 40 educational institutions providing education to more than 15,000 students with 1000 staff force. Starting from giving importance to Primary, Secondary and PreUniversity education by opening number of Schools and Junior Colleges, the National Education Society is offering courses with high quality education in Engineering, Law, Commerce, Pharmacy, Applied Science and Home Science through its well established colleges. Thousands of Aluminies of these institutions have made their name and fame earned by obtaining national and international recognitions in their respective fields.

It is a matter of great satisfaction to the society in its efforts to do best for imparting good education to students. Good number of students is coming out from its institutions with flying colours obtaining distinction every year. The Society is managed by an Executive Committee. The directors have taken the development of the Society as a life mission and are continuing the efforts to fulfill the aspirations of its founders. It has provided all the necessary facilities with adequate infrastructure to students and staff to promote both curricular and co-curricular activities. The National Education Society observed its Golden Jubilee during 1998, and dedicated a statue to Mr. S. R. Nagappa Shrestty, a man who devoted his life to the development of the society.
